Ion Cyclotron Waves In The High Altitude Cusp: Cluster Observations At Varying Spacecraft Separations, K. Nykyri, P. J. Cargill, E. A. Lucek, T. S. Horbury, A. Balogh, B. Lavraud, I. Dandouras, H. Reme

Publications

We have analysed high-resolution Cluster magnetic field data during three high-altitude cusp crossings in 2001 and 2002. The Cluster separations for these crossings varied between 100 and 600 km and therefore provided an unique opportunity to study wave properties at different length scales. In the cusp Cluster sees frequent intervals of magnetic field fluctuations with clear peaks in power close to the local ion cyclotron frequency, and both left- and right-handed polarisations. At large separations the power seen at different spacecraft can differ by orders of magnitude. For smaller separations, the power seen at the four spacecraft agrees better but …

Breaking Of Thunderstorm-Generated Gravity Waves As A Source Of Short-Period Ducted Waves At Mesopause Altitudes, Jonathan B. Snively, Victor P. Pasko Dec 2003

Breaking Of Thunderstorm-Generated Gravity Waves As A Source Of Short-Period Ducted Waves At Mesopause Altitudes, Jonathan B. Snively, Victor P. Pasko

Publications

Numerical simulation results indicate that the breaking of atmospheric gravity waves generated by tropospheric convection can excite short-period secondary waves, which are trapped in the lower thermospheric duct and which closely resemble quasi-monochromatic structures commonly observed in airglow imaging experiments.

Scale-Dependent Associations Among Fish Predation, Littoral Habitat, And Distributions Of Crayfish Species, James E. Garvey, Jessica E. Rettig, Roy A. Stein, David M. Lodge, Steven P. Klosiewski Dec 2003

Scale-Dependent Associations Among Fish Predation, Littoral Habitat, And Distributions Of Crayfish Species, James E. Garvey, Jessica E. Rettig, Roy A. Stein, David M. Lodge, Steven P. Klosiewski

Publications

To predict how species establish and disperse within novel communities, the spatial scale at which competition, predation, and habitat interact must be understood. We explored how these factors affect the distribution and abundance of the exotic crayfishes Orconectes rusticus and O. propinquus and the native O. virilis at both the site-specific and whole-lake scales in northern Wisconsin lakes. During summer 1990, we quantified crayfish, fish predators, and fish diets in cobble and macrophyte sites in Trout Lake, comparing resulting patterns to those in 21 lakes surveyed during summer 1987. Within and across lakes, fish abundance was unrelated to habitat. Within …

Algal Vs. Macrophyte Inputs To Food Webs Of Inland Saline Wetlands, E. Andrew Hart, James R. Lovvorn Dec 2003

Algal Vs. Macrophyte Inputs To Food Webs Of Inland Saline Wetlands, E. Andrew Hart, James R. Lovvorn

Publications

Invertebrate food webs in wetlands were traditionally thought to be fueled mainly by decaying macrophytes, but recently it has been recognized that microalgae may be more important. In particular, the paradigm that shredders of vascular plant litter dominate food web processes may not apply to many wetlands where shredders are rare and microalgae more abundant. This issue is complicated by potential consumption of flocs of dissolved organic matter (DOM) released from living plants, and of exopolymer secretions (EPS) from both autotrophic and heterotrophic microbes. In Wyoming, we used gut contents and stable isotopes to investigate organic matter sources for the …

Publications

We report optical and near-infrared follow-up observations of GRB 011121 collected predominantly at ESO telescopes in Chile. We discover a break in the afterglow light curve after 1.3 days, which implies an initial jet opening angle of about 9°. The jet origin of this break is supported by the fact that the spectral energy distribution is achromatic during the rst four days. During later phases, GRB 011121 shows signi cant excess emission above the flux predicted by a power law, which we interpret as additional light from an underlying supernova. In particular, the spectral energy distribution of the optical transient …

A Presolar Galactic Merger Spawned The Sic-Grain Mainstream, Donald D. Clayton Nov 2003

A Presolar Galactic Merger Spawned The Sic-Grain Mainstream, Donald D. Clayton

Publications

The merger of a metal-poor satellite galaxy with the Milky Way about 5–6 Gyr ago is postulated to resolve three great unexplained conflicts presented by mainstream presolar stardust SiC grains. The model allows all of the asymptotic giant branch (AGB) carbon stars that donated these grains to have been formed nearly simultaneously in a starburst generated by gaseous mixing, despite their great apparent age differences when evaluated in terms of Galactic chemical evolution (GCE). The model explains why a precisely measured lin-ear correlation exists between the ratios 29Si/28Si and 30Si/28Si in the initial compositions of those AGB stars. It suggests …

Evolution Of The Polarization Of The Optical Afterglow Of The Gamma-Ray Burst Grb 030329, Dieter H. Hartmann, Jochen Greiner, Sylvio Klose, Klaus Reisch, Hans Martin Schmid, Re'em Sari, Chryssa Kouveliotou, Arne Rau, Eliana Palazzi, Christian Straubmeier Nov 2003

Evolution Of The Polarization Of The Optical Afterglow Of The Gamma-Ray Burst Grb 030329, Dieter H. Hartmann, Jochen Greiner, Sylvio Klose, Klaus Reisch, Hans Martin Schmid, Re'em Sari, Chryssa Kouveliotou, Arne Rau, Eliana Palazzi, Christian Straubmeier

Publications

The association of a supernova with GRB 0303291,2 strongly supports the collapsar model3 of -ray bursts (GRBs), where a relativistic jet4 forms after 1 the progenitor star collapses. Such jets cannot be spatially resolved because of their cosmological distances. Their existence is conjectured based on breaks in GRB afterglow light curves and the theoretical desire to reduce the GRB energy requirements. Temporal evolution of polarization5,6,7 may provide independent evidence for the jet structure of the relativistic outflow. Small-level polarization ( 1-3%)8−17 has been reported for a few bursts, but the temporal evolution of polarization properties could not be established. Here, …

Line Shape Diagnositics Of Galactic 26al, K. Kretschmer, R. Diehl, Dieter H. Hartmann Nov 2003

Line Shape Diagnositics Of Galactic 26al, K. Kretschmer, R. Diehl, Dieter H. Hartmann

Publications

The shape of the gamma-ray line from radioactive 26Al, at 1808.7 keV energy in the frame of the decaying isotope,is determined by its kinematics when it decays, typically 106y after its ejection into the interstellar medium from its nucleosyn-thesis source. Three measurements of the line width exist: HEAO-C’s 1982 value of (0 + 3) keV FWHM, the GRIS 1996 valueof (5. 4 ± 1. 3) keV FWHM, and the recent RHESSI value of (2. 0 ± 0. 8) keV FWHM, suggesting either “cold”, “hot”, or “warm”26Al in the ISM. We model the line width as expected from Galactic rotation, expanding …

Aspidoderid Nematodes From Bolivian Armadillos, With The Description Of A New Species Of Lauroia (Heterakoidea: Aspidoderidae), F Agustín Jiménez-Ruiz, Scott L Gardner

Publications

One nine-banded armadillo (Dasypus novemcinctus) and 1 yellow armadillo (Euphractus sexcinctus) were necropsied in the field during an expedition to collect parasites of mammals in Bolivia. A total of 205 Aspidodera binansata Railliet and Henry, 1913 (Heterakoidea: Aspidoderidae), and 40 specimens of Lauroia bolivari n. sp. (Heterakoidea: Aspidoderidae) were recovered from the cecum and large intestines of D. novemcinctus and E. sexcinctus. Aspidodera esperanzae Fujita et al., 1995, is proposed as a junior synonym of A. binansata based on the structure of the cordons on the hood. Lauroia bolivari n. sp. has an undercut cephalic …

Using Optical And Near-Infrared Photometry To Test Macho Lens Candidates, Ted Von Hippel, Et Al. Oct 2003

Using Optical And Near-Infrared Photometry To Test Macho Lens Candidates, Ted Von Hippel, Et Al.

Publications

We obtained new VLT/ISAAC H-band observations for five MACHO LMC source stars and adjacent LMC field regions. After combining our near-IR photometry with Hubble Space Telescope/PC BVRI optical photometry, we compared the MACHO objects to the adjacent field stars in a variety of color-magnitude and color-color diagrams. These diagnostic diagrams were chosen to be sensitive to our hypothesis that at least some of the MACHO lenses were foreground Galactic disk or thick-disk M dwarfs. For the five lensed objects we studied, our hypothesis could be ruled out for main-sequence lens masses ≥0.1 M☉ for distances out to …

We report our analysis of the stability of pulsation periods in the DAV star (pulsating hydrogen atmosphere white dwarf) ZZ Ceti, also called R548. On the basis of observations that span 31 years, we conclude that the period 213.13 s observed in ZZ Ceti drifts at a rate dP/dt (5:5 ± 1:9) x 10-15 s s-1, after correcting for proper motion. Our results are consistent with previous values for this mode and an improvement over them because of the larger time base. The characteristic stability timescale implied for the pulsation period is …
