Incorporating Recreational And Artisanal Fishing Fleets In Atlantic Billfish Management, Ayeisha A. Brinson
Incorporating Recreational And Artisanal Fishing Fleets In Atlantic Billfish Management, Ayeisha A. Brinson
Open Access Dissertations
Atlantic billfish include sailfish (Istiophorus platypterus), blue marlin (Makaira nigricans), white marlin (Kajikia albida, formerly Tetrapturus albidus) and the spearfishes (Tetrapturus); these fishes are found in tropical and subtropical waters. The spearfishes include the longbill spearfish (T. pfluegeri), the Mediterranean spearfish (T. belone) and the roundscale spearfish (T. georgii). The International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas (ICCAT) is the regional fishery management organization that conducts research to determine the condition of tuna and billfish resources and supports international cooperative management. ICCAT has determined that blue marlin and white marlin are overfished; the status of sailfish and spearfish are …
The Influence Of Habitat Quality On The Community Structure, Distribution Pattern, Condition, And Growth Of Coral Reef Fish: A Case Study Of Grunts (Haemulidae) From Antigua B.W.I, A Small Island System, Sherry Lynette Constantine
The Influence Of Habitat Quality On The Community Structure, Distribution Pattern, Condition, And Growth Of Coral Reef Fish: A Case Study Of Grunts (Haemulidae) From Antigua B.W.I, A Small Island System, Sherry Lynette Constantine

The goal of this research was to determine the relative quality of near shore marine areas by investigating their influence on Haemulidae community structure, distribution pattern, condition, and growth. Habitat was defined at the small spatial scale of individual habitat types such as seagrass beds, mangroves and coral reefs, and at the broader spatial scale of the interconnection of these individual habitat types within a mosaic (IHM). Ten spatial, biotic and abiotic parameters (percentage coverage of sand, mangroves, hard substrate, and seagrass, turbidity, pH, salinity, temperature, average depth, and predator density) were investigated. These environmental characteristics acted as proxies for …
A Spatial Analysis Of Colorectal Cancer In Miami-Dade County, Monique Hernandez
A Spatial Analysis Of Colorectal Cancer In Miami-Dade County, Monique Hernandez
Open Access Dissertations
This dissertation explores the spatial patterns and place-based characteristics of colorectal cancer (CRC) late stage incidence and CRC-specific mortality in Miami-Dade County. Because CRC is the second leading cause of death among all cancers and is almost 90 percent preventable through medical screenings, investigations of CRC disparities across groups and communities are extremely relevant in the fight against cancer. This paper analyzes the geographic distribution of CRC cases in Miami-Dade County between two periods, 1988-1992 and 1998-2002 to: a) identify significant "hot spots" or clusters of disease; b) investigate associations of CRC patterns with neighborhood level characteristics such as socio-economic …
Physical And Biological Characteristics Of Billfish Spawning Habitat In The Straits Of Florida, David Earl Richardson
Physical And Biological Characteristics Of Billfish Spawning Habitat In The Straits Of Florida, David Earl Richardson
Open Access Dissertations
The objective of this dissertation was to examine sailfish (Istiophorus platypterus) and blue marlin (Makaira nigricans) spawning in the Straits of Florida, with a specific focus on 1) the physical and biological characteristics of the spawning environment, and 2) the role of the region within the broader spawning patterns of these two species. In order to accomplish these objectives, two years of monthly ichthyoplankton collections and physical measurements across the Straits of Florida were combined with a finer-scale Lagrangian study. Additionally, a molecular species-identification methodology was developed that was both high-throughput and suitable for use with a broad taxonomic range …
Distribution, Reproduction, And Transport Of Zooplankton In The Western Arctic, Leopoldo Llinas
Distribution, Reproduction, And Transport Of Zooplankton In The Western Arctic, Leopoldo Llinas
Open Access Dissertations
This dissertation focuses on the distribution, reproduction, and transport of zooplankton in the Chukchi and Beaufort seas and adjacent Canada Basin. Specifically, it analyzes 1) the species-specific distribution of copepod nauplii as it is forced by the surface layer mesoscale circulation and physical properties, 2) the reproduction of the dominant copepod Calanus glacialis in the western Arctic, and 3) the effects of eddy transport on the zooplankton community in the Chukchi and Beaufort seas and Canada Basin. To achieve this I adapted a molecular identification method to work with small crustaceans. The method was successfully used to generate a sequence …
Nitrogen Cycling On Coral Reefs: A Stable Isotopic Investigation Of Nutrient Dynamics Within The Florida Keys Coral Reef Tract, Kathryn Amanda Lamb-Wozniak
Nitrogen Cycling On Coral Reefs: A Stable Isotopic Investigation Of Nutrient Dynamics Within The Florida Keys Coral Reef Tract, Kathryn Amanda Lamb-Wozniak
Open Access Dissertations
This dissertation serves as a comprehensive, natural-abundance analysis of the present-day spatial and temporal dynamics and trophic linkages of nitrogen from within the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary (FKNMS). This work was accomplished by documenting the delta 15 N of particulate organic matter (POM), several genera of aquatic vegetation and herbivorous fish, as well as dissolved water column nitrogen. Seasonal and spatial variations in delta 15 N were assessed, trophic level variations among reef constituents were quantified, and relative contributions of both natural and anthropogenic nitrogen into the reef tract were determined. The measured mean delta 15 N of POM …
