The close partnership between school counselors and principals suggested that their work together can influence student learning and school culture. Their roles, while different in nature, could be conducive to collaborating in an effective manner to help achieve their respective goals and the objectives of their employment responsibilities. Ideally, principals should fully understand the role of school counselors and allow them to implement a comprehensive counseling plan to increase student learning, reduce discipline issues, promote attendance, and positively impacts school culture. According to the American School Counselor Association (ASCA), outlined the role of a professional school counselor to incorporate the …

The American University: Attitudes About Safety And The Impact Of Gun Regulations On Campus, April Bixler Dec 2023

The American University: Attitudes About Safety And The Impact Of Gun Regulations On Campus, April Bixler

Online Theses and Dissertations

An ultimate goal of American universities is to provide a safe and secure environment for all who attend and operate there, but what safety looks and feels like to the individual can vary to a great degree. There are many factors that campus safety departments consider when designing their campus safety policies and regulations. One way universities in the U.S. have chosen to regulate campus safety is by allowing concealed carry (CC) on their campuses. No evidence was found in the state of Kentucky that explains if a CC policy is warranted or being pursued by faculty, staff and students …

First-Year Writing Ungraded Study At Eastern Kentucky University, Kaitlynn Elizabeth Moody Dec 2023

First-Year Writing Ungraded Study At Eastern Kentucky University, Kaitlynn Elizabeth Moody

Tradition And Satisfaction: The Mob And Lynching In The Georgian Cotton Belt, 1890-1899, Marcus Anthony Thornton Dec 2023

Tradition And Satisfaction: The Mob And Lynching In The Georgian Cotton Belt, 1890-1899, Marcus Anthony Thornton

Online Theses and Dissertations

Control and order have been among the defining traits of all societies. Exuding those traits despite a collapsing relevance within their rapidly changing society was modus operandi of most middle-class white southern men at the confluence of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. By understanding proposed substantiation for their place in the established social hierarchy, we gain insight into why they fought so adamantly to protect it. Furthermore, expanded understanding aids in formulating explanations for why they felt so entitled to occupy the peak of the sociocultural dominance hierarchy. This analysis is not simply a matter of a skin color. Perceived …

"Temporal Salvation": A Study Of Lds Leadership Strategies From 1874-1917, Haley Elaine Pettit

Online Theses and Dissertations

Between 1874 and 1917, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints transitioned from a group operating on the fringes of American society to an adeptly functioning American bureaucratic institution. LDS leaders managed the change through wielding their doctrine to help them achieve “temporal salvation.” This study maps how LDS leaders shifted the meanings of two of their doctrines—plural marriage and the Word of Wisdom—from 1874 to 1917 to achieve their larger goals. Plural marriage originally served to unite the members of their faith—the Saints—against non-members, or the Gentiles. Most Americans wholly rejected polygamy, so LDS members used plural marriage …

Individual Capture History Affects Site Use And Defensive Behavior Of Foraging Eastern Copperheads At A Recreational Site, James Benjamin Stratton

Online Theses and Dissertations

To maximize energy available for foraging or reproduction, optimality theory suggests individuals allocate energy toward defensive behaviors equivalent to risk of predation. In this framework, repeat encounters with humans that do not reduce individual fitness could result in a decreased defensive response toward humans in subsequent encounters. I investigated the role individual experience played in shaping the defensive behaviors and frequency of site use of foraging of eastern copperheads (Agkistrodon contortrix) at Koomer Ridge Campground in the Daniel Boone National Forest, Kentucky. Since 2015 this site has been used for ongoing, annual mark-recapture studies of the foraging ecology of copperheads …

Using Mesocosms To Model Optimal Levels Of Body Size Variation In Larval Spotted Salamanders (Ambystoma Maculatum), Ian Kratzer

Online Theses and Dissertations

Body size is a critical aspect of an organism’s biological identity mediated by various biotic and abiotic factors. Body size historically been approached through “single optima” approaches, but body size variation modifies both inter- and intraspecific interactions and impacts competition-driven fitness outcomes within populations. Understanding optimal levels of body size variation will help illuminate how variation influences competitive outcomes and reproductive fitness. Populations may be structured through resource partitioning or competitive hierarchies, yet these structures predict contradictory size variation optima. This study sought to determine optimal levels of intraspecific body size variation in populations of larval salamanders to evaluate these …

Emotions As Social Objects In The Justice System: How Feelings Develop In Justice Processes And What They Do., Peyton Alexander Warman

Online Theses and Dissertations

Criminological research on emotionality and emotional demonstration in justice processes remains underdeveloped. One method of approaching the issue of understanding emotions in the justice setting is to conceptualize them as a form of social communication, impacted by the structure of the legal domain yet holding significant influence on their own. This thesis seeks to establish how emotions are rooted in social dynamics, and how the justice system, in both restorative and punitive contexts, including prison environments, creates specific social conditions that guide emotional demonstration and interpretation. The comprehensive review of established literature leads to the initial conclusion that emotions are …

A Quantification Of The Metabolic Demand Wrought By Explosive Ordinance Disposal Load Carriage, Gage Cousineau Aug 2023

A Quantification Of The Metabolic Demand Wrought By Explosive Ordinance Disposal Load Carriage, Gage Cousineau

Online Theses and Dissertations

In the last 7 years, there have been landmark studies concerning Explosive Ordinance Disposal (EOD) load carriage. These studies (Bach et al., 2017; Wu et al., 2022) have worked to quantify the ability of an operator to work while encumbered by EOD personal protective equipment (PPE), but have not evaluated possible sources of mitigation for the increased demand. Intuitively, it seems that greater levels of fitness would modify the degree of increased demand an operator may acquire during EOD load carriage. The current study seeks to illuminate relationships between strength, power, and/or endurance and EOD load carriage performance. Recreationally trained …

No Safe Spaces: Institutionally Washed Out, Jordan Marie King May 2023

No Safe Spaces: Institutionally Washed Out, Jordan Marie King

Online Theses and Dissertations

Abstract Prior literature has shown that black and brown bodies (BBB) are policed and victimized at higher rates than their white counterparts within the criminal justice system. The criminalization of school discipline is a microcosm of ‘big’ criminal justice. Criminal justice measures were implemented within schools as a means of maintaining ‘safety.’ Policing in schools perpetuates punishment disproportionality and maintains similar disproportionalities as the ‘big’ criminal justice system in terms of for whom and how how severely it is applied. Meaning that regardless of the school's demographics or student backgrounds, black and brown bodies are punished at a higher rate …

Calling All Cast Members: Elevating Material Objects And Ambient Environments To Non-Human Rhetorical Actors In Arden Of Faversham, Tara Michelle Pulaski

Online Theses and Dissertations

Material rhetoric and ambient rhetoric frameworks offer a unique lens to view the materiality in early modern drama. Using these principles, as well as Actor-Network Theory and Affect Theory, objects and environments can be elevated to non-human actors in a play’s rhetorical situation. Arden of Faversham engages heavily with the material world at every level of the play, making it a prime candidate for such an analysis. The material objects, ambient environments, and geographical places in Arden of Faversham remain so crucial that they become non-human rhetorical actors, complimenting and complicating the human actors. The play cannot be severed from …
