A study of Public Law 94-437 Scholarship Program for nurses was conducted in the following states: Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Nebraska, North Dakota, Oklahoma, South Dakota, and Wisconsin. The IHS conducted the study to improve the understanding of the P.L. 94-437 Scholarship Program for nurses. The results of the study will be used to guide IHS policy and programs for the recruitment of students into the Scholarship Program, recruitment and retention of nurses in the IHS, and the education of nurses. This is the report of a health needs assessment for the Oneida Indian Nation of New York (ONNY). This needs assessment was conducted in order to collect population-based data related to behavioral risks and reproductive health for Oneida males and females. The survey of the Oneida was initiated because there is almost no risk factor data available on Indian tribes of the northeast, and none available for the Oneida Nation of New York. This study provides basic statistical information on cancer rates for American Indians in the United States. The tables and charts graphically show and describe the administrative, or area, divisions of the IHS, the estimated service population for each area, and mortality from 1984-1988 for malignant neoplasms. This report describes a series of six studies on cancer in American Indian and Alaska Native (AI/AN) women, with a particular emphasis on cancer of the breast and cervix. Data from the Indian Health Service (IHS) inpatient data system was used to generate estimates of incidence of cancer among AI/AN populations. Additionally, breast cancer rates among Indian women in Arizona and New Mexico were compiled from extensive chart review of the New Mexico Tumor Registry and the IHS Inpatient Data System.
