George Mason: Slave Owning Virginia Planter As Slavery Opponent?, Louis Bellamy Dec 2004

George Mason: Slave Owning Virginia Planter As Slavery Opponent?, Louis Bellamy

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The present work investigates the often cited, but poorly supported, notion that Founding Father George Mason was a wealthy, slave-owning Virginian who vehemently opposed slavery. Utilizing Mason's state papers, letters, and other documents, as well as contemporaries' accounts of his speeches, this work will analyze those records' contextual construction, and it will deconstruct both Mason's written and spoken words and his actions and inactions relative to slavery. The goal of this effort is to determine whether Mason, who ostensibly played such an instrumental role in the development of the "rights" of Americans, and who remained a slaveholder—thereby trampling the rights …

Wheelchair Selection: Social Perspectives And Their Potential Impact On The Disabled, Lisa Boswell Dec 2004

Wheelchair Selection: Social Perspectives And Their Potential Impact On The Disabled, Lisa Boswell

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The purpose of this study was to examine the physical and social factors associated with wheelchair selection. The study was carried out to test the viewpoint that social factors have a greater impact than physical factors on which type of wheelchair (power or manual) patients choose. A questionnaire was administered in the summer of 2004 to 200 members of a veteran's organization in the Northcentral Region of the United States. The sample consisted of 52 respondents. The results of this study suggest that a high correlation exists between the level of injury the respondents have and their wheelchair selection, but …

Improving The Accuracy Of The Vo2 Max Prediction Obtained From Submaxial Ymca Testing, Lindsay Parson Dec 2004

Improving The Accuracy Of The Vo2 Max Prediction Obtained From Submaxial Ymca Testing, Lindsay Parson

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Maximal oxygen uptake (VO2 max) is the best criterion measure for aerobic fitness and the prescription of exercise intensity for programs designed to enhance cardiorespiratory fitness. There are two ways of obtaining VO2 max: maximal tests, which require subjects to exercise to the point of volitional exhaustion and provide the most accurate measure; and submaximal tests, which are less physically strenuous but have lower accuracy. A popular submaximal protocol is the YMCA bike test. Steady state heart rate (HR) is measured at multiple submaximal workloads and extrapolated to the subject's estimated maximal HR (220-age). The VO2 corresponding to the estimated …

Tourism And Rural Identity In The Waasland, Belgium, Joel Stuart Thomas Dec 2004

Tourism And Rural Identity In The Waasland, Belgium, Joel Stuart Thomas

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The northern portion of Belgium, a region known as Flanders, is one of the most densely settled, industrialized areas in the world. Existing in small, isolated tracts, are "green spaces" mainly devoted to agricultural output.

The Flemish way of life and environment has become increasingly "urbanized." Tourism commissions operating in the countryside have drawn on Flemish heritage and identity, as well as the rural landscape to act as marketing tools. In terms of perception and the notion of a distinctly Flemish rural "space'" how are tourist flow patterns influenced? Does the process of perception result in an exclusive urban to …

Integrity tests are among the least utilized pre-employment selection instruments due, at least in part, to concern regarding the ease at which applicants can successfully fake their responses. The current study attempted to assess the extent to which actual job applicants fake overt integrity tests. We assigned one group of applicants to an honest condition and one group to a standard response condition. Applicants in the honest condition received a set of instructions that were modified to illustrate the importance of responding as honestly as possible when completing the questionnaire, whereas the standard response condition received a set of instructions …

Aging And The Effects Of Prior Expectancies In Contingency Judgment, Laura Strain Aug 2004

Aging And The Effects Of Prior Expectancies In Contingency Judgment, Laura Strain

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

This study examined how prior expectancies affect young and older adults' contingency judgments. Participants completed contingency problems representing all combinations of expectancy (positive, negative, unrelated, and unknown) and contingency (positive, negative, and zero). I originally predicted that the largest age differences would emerge when both the expectancy and the contingency were strong and incongruent, regardless of the nature of the expectancy. However, age differences in the effect of expectancy were strongest when the expectancy was positive and the contingency was Incongruent, and older adults' judgments were more biased by this expectancy. Likewise, I predicted that there would be no age …

Restlessness, Revision, And Multigenre, Jennifer Bradbury Aug 2004

Restlessness, Revision, And Multigenre, Jennifer Bradbury

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

This thesis explores the importance of restlessness in revision from the perspective of a writer and teacher of writing. This phenomenon, which naturally recurs throughout the writing process, is key to understanding what effective revision is and how to do it most effectively. The thesis has a secondary focus on multigenre writing because it offers a powerful means for understanding revision and conducting it authentically. Thus, both the content and structure of the thesis strive to present and apply the theories of restless revision and multigenre writing.

The Effects Of Music Preference And Exercise Intensity On Exercise Enjoyment And Perceived Exertion, Allison Dyrlund

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

In spite of the well-known physical and psychological benefits of exercise roughly 50% of people who start an exercise program will have dropped out within six months. Therefore, it is important to examine the determinants of exercise adherence. Past research has shown that enjoyment is an essential factor in exercise adherence. Additionally, music has been shown to influence exercise enjoyment. The music and enjoyment literature has generally included most preferred and no music conditions, yet no one has considered a least preferred music condition. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to examine the effects of music preference and exercise …

Episodic Heavy Drinking And Marijuana Use Among Undergraduate Students At Western Kentucky University, Ariel L. Sarmiento Aug 2004

Episodic Heavy Drinking And Marijuana Use Among Undergraduate Students At Western Kentucky University, Ariel L. Sarmiento

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Research has documented that Episodic Heavy Drinking (EHD), defined as consuming four or more and five or more alcoholic drinks per drinking episode among females and males, respectively, is a prevalent risk behavior among undergraduate college students throughout the United States. Moreover, studies have shown that EHD is the leading cause of preventable morbidity and mortality among college students as unintentional injuries, sexual assaults, and unsafe sexual behaviors among this population have been linked to this risk behavior.

Illicit substance use, although often portrayed as a separate risk behavior, is also associated with EHD. Nationally, the most frequently used illicit …

Cloning And Sequencing Of Bovine Na+/K= Atpase Α-1 Sub-Unit, Srikanth Aakula

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The major focus of this project was cloning and sequencing the α-1 sub-unit of Na+/K+-ATase gene in bovine corneal endothelium. The Na+/K+-ATase, also called the Na+ pump, is a crucial transmembrane protein. By transporting water and ions from and through the cornea into the aqueous humor, it is responsible for maintenance of structural integrity, corneal hydration and thereby transparency of the cornea. The Na+ pump is characterized by a complex molecular heterogeneity that results from differential association of multiple isoforms of both a (the catalytic) and [3 (glycoprotein) sub-units. In the corneal endothelium, α-1 α-2, β-l and β-2 sub-units are …

Exploration Of The Relationship Between Moral Judgment Development And Crystallized Intelligence, Kristy Jones Aug 2004

Exploration Of The Relationship Between Moral Judgment Development And Crystallized Intelligence, Kristy Jones

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Recent studies have reported different findings about how moral judgment as defined by the Defining Issues Test (DIT; Rest, Narvaez, Bebeau, & Thoma, 1999) relates to verbal intellectual ability. For example, Sanders, Lubinski, and Benbow (1995) argued that DIT scores are reducible to indices that represent verbal intellectual ability. Thoma and his colleagues (Derryberry, Thoma, Narvaez, & Rest, 2000; Thoma, Derryberry, & Narvaez, 2003; Thoma, Narvaez, Rest, & Derryberry, 1999) found support that DIT scores and indices of verbal intellectual ability are separate sources of information. In considering this relationship, these previous studies have most often referred to grade point …

Carbon-Carbon Bond Formation Via O-Lithiointermediates, Julia Raymer Aug 2004

Carbon-Carbon Bond Formation Via O-Lithiointermediates, Julia Raymer

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The process of C-C bond formation via Directed ort/zo-Metalation (DoM) consists of two separate steps. Utilizing fractional equivalents of TMEDA in hydrocarbon solvents at 60°C, o-lithiation of anisole and dimethylaniline can be effected in >95% yields. The first step in the DoM process involves preparation of solid samples of these o-lithiointermediates. Completing the sequence, the second step concerns formation of a new arene-derivative bond at the reactive site. For this thesis the arene-derivative bond formed is to carbon. Various carbon electrophiles have been studied using different solvent systems, and results reveal a possible disconnect between the reaction conditions for the …

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Helianthus eggertii (Asteraceae) is a federally threatened sunflower species that typically grows between open woods and barrens. This species has both sexual and asexual modes of reproduction, which can influence the amount of genetic diversity present within and among populations. Maintaining genetic diversity is one of the primary objectives in managing threatened species or populations. Fire and population size may influence genetic diversity. Two Inter-Simple Sequence Repeat Markers (873 and MAO) were used to characterize many important genetic parameters of 17 populations in 2003 and four populations in 2004. This information was used to assess the effectiveness of different conservation …

The Effects Of Age And Task Timing Characteristics On Contingency Judgment, Marci C. Sammons Aug 2004

The Effects Of Age And Task Timing Characteristics On Contingency Judgment, Marci C. Sammons

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Detecting contingency relationships between causal events allows us to adapt to and control these events. However, research has shown age-related impairments in this ability. The goal of this study was to examine how reduced processing speed in older adults affects contingency learning. Manipulating the time during which to generate the response, to test the limited time mechanism of processing speed, had little effect on contingency judgments. Varying the temporal contiguity of events, to test the simultaneity mechanism of processing speed, affected young adults’ contingency judgments. Older adults’ judgments were less accurate overall, and young adults’ judgments were similarly less accurate …

Nice Polynomials, Jonathan Groves Jul 2004

Nice Polynomials, Jonathan Groves

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

We consider the problem of finding, constructing, and classifying nice polynomials. After a short history of previous results, we present a general property of nice polynomials which leads to an important modification of the concept of equivalence classes of nice polynomials. We give several important results on nice symmetric or antisymmetric polynomials with an odd number of roots, which dramatically increase the speed of a computer search for examples. We present complete solutions to the symmetric three root case, the general three root case, and the symmetric four root case. We also give the relations between the roots and critical …

The Effects Of Self-Monitoring And Religious Self-Discrepancies On Negative Affect, John Parker May 2004

The Effects Of Self-Monitoring And Religious Self-Discrepancies On Negative Affect, John Parker

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

According to Higgins's (1987) self-discrepancy theory, an individual's selfesteem is based upon fulfilling one's self-expectations or the expectations of significant others (e.g., spouse or parent). Failure to live up to these expectations results in greater levels of depression, anxiety, and lower self-esteem. Previous research has also found that those low in Snyder and Gangestad's (1986) self-monitoring construct are more influenced by their own expectations, while those high in self-monitoring are more influenced by others' expectations. It was predicted that Christians who are low in self-monitoring will have greater levels of depression and anxiety and lower self-esteem if they fail to …

Cognitive Ability Testing And Selection: A Review Of Court Decisions Since 1991, Leslie Pedigo May 2004

Cognitive Ability Testing And Selection: A Review Of Court Decisions Since 1991, Leslie Pedigo

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Cognitive ability testing is utilized by many organizations in the selection process. Historically, cognitive ability testing has resulted in group differences in scores, particularly between Caucasians and African-Americans. Such group differences can result in adverse impact. This impact can lead to legal ramifications for the organization utilizing the cognitive ability test. The present study examined ten factors to determine their relationship to the findings of the courts in cases involving cognitive ability tests. The factors examined were gender of the plaintiff, reason for the lawsuit, workplace setting, group or individual plaintiffs, standardadized versus unstandardized tests, validation of the tests, development …

Influence Of Poultry Litter On Dark Tobacco Growth And Soil Nutrient Availability, Jason Simmons May 2004

Influence Of Poultry Litter On Dark Tobacco Growth And Soil Nutrient Availability, Jason Simmons

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Due to the relatively high value of dark tobacco compared with fertilizer costs, nitrogen is recommended at levels as high as 338 kg ha"1. Such rates of inorganic fertilizers increase the osmotic pressure of the soil solution and soil acidity, often causing reduced stands, Mn toxicity, Mo and Ca deficiencies, and reduced yield and quality of the cured leaf (Sims et al., 1984). Poultry litter utilized as a nutrient source is an inexpensive alternative to this dilemma due to its relatively neutral or alkaline composition. However, due the amount of chloride present in poultry litter, the University of Kentucky advises …

Spectroscopic Studies Of Chlorophyll A Complexes With Trinitro-Substituted Flourene Derivatives, Stephanie Smalley

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Absorption, fluorescence, and excited-state lifetime studies of chlorophyll a (Chl a) with fluorene, 2-(2,4,7-Trinitro-fluoren-9-ylideneaminooxy)-propionic acid (TFPR), 2- (2,4,7-Trinitro-fluoren-9-ylidenemethyl)-phenol, (TFPH), and 9-Isopropylidene-2,4,7- trinitro-9H-fluorene (ITNF) have been investigated. These systems were studied in acetonitrile and dichloromethane at room temperature. Absorption data were analyzed with the Nash plot. Linearity of the Nash plots proved that a 1:1 complex was formed between the donor and acceptor. Ground state binding constants (Ka) of each system were also determined from the y-intercept of these plots. Fluorescence data were analyzed with a Stern-Volmer plot. The quenching constants (Ksv) were obtained from the slope of these plots. These …

Understanding Perceptions Of Accessibility And Mobility Through Structuration Theory, Mark Graham May 2004

Understanding Perceptions Of Accessibility And Mobility Through Structuration Theory, Mark Graham

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Structuration theory in geography states that social systems are reproduced through the relationships between systems, structures, actors and their perceptions. Therefore, understanding the modes through which social systems are reproduced will allow for a clearer understanding of the nature of society. However, much of the relevant social theory has not been empirically tested. Thus, by empirically examining general perceptual differences between different built environments, on a macro and a micro level, it is hoped that the links between perceptions, social structures, and the built environment can be more fully understood. A better understanding of these links will, in turn, allow …

Black And White: Structural And Functional Aspects Of Dermal Chromatophores Of The Marbled Whiptail Lizard (Cnemidophorus Marmoratus), James Swan

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The skin of reptiles is a complex organ with many sensory, regulatory and behavioral functions. Desert reptiles face a suite of challenges as their skin contacts hot-dry environmental surfaces. The marbled whiptail lizard, Cnemidophorus marmoratus (Lacertilia: Teiidae), is found in hot deserts of southeastern New Mexico and western Texas and is often above ground during the hottest times of the day. When active, these lizards encounter a broad range and intensity of visible and infrared wavelengths. The role of the integument in temperature regulation, although poorly understood, is critically important for these diurnal animals. Albedo, coloration, pattern, and in some …
