An Analysis Of Potential Factors Influencing A Beginner's Choice Of Preferred Contest Throws After Seven Weeks Of Instruction In The Sport Of Judo, William Saville
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
There is an apparent cycle in the history and appeal of a particular sport. When this cycle is completed there is a need for re-examination and change to initiate a further cycle. Judo in the Western world would appear to be reaching the end of such a cycle and examination and change is necessary for a variety of historical and cultural reasons to ensure that the sport of Judo embarks on another important cycle.
Crossed Field Trochoidal Trajectory Devices For Investigating The Reflection Of Slow Electrons From Metallic Surfaces, Stan Lemaster
Crossed Field Trochoidal Trajectory Devices For Investigating The Reflection Of Slow Electrons From Metallic Surfaces, Stan Lemaster
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
The objective of this study was to build preliminary devices . which could be used to measure electron reflection coefficient values using crossed electric and magnetic fields. The technique for using crossed fields to measure reflection coefficients was developed at Air Force Cambridge Research Laboratories. The reflection coefficient is the ratio of the number of electrons in a reflected beam to the number of electrons in an incident beam striking a surface.
The work described herein was a part of a project authored by AFCRL under contract AF19 (628)-5940; Project 8605 (with Western Kentucky University being the contractor) which was …

In order to attempt an analysis of the success of the symbol and the method of achievement, it is necessary to understand the major intentions of Hawthorne's art and his concept of the symbol; the second chapter explains these theories and with this knowledge, the symbols selected were evaluated.
An Analysis Of The Lincoln-Osbretsky Motor Development Scale With An Emphasis On The Reduction Of Total Test Items, Roger Pearman
An Analysis Of The Lincoln-Osbretsky Motor Development Scale With An Emphasis On The Reduction Of Total Test Items, Roger Pearman
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
The Lincoln-Oseretsky Motor Development Scale is designed to test the motor ability of children between the ages of six and fourteen. It is an individually administered scale consisting of thirty-six motor skill items such as finger dexterity, eye-hand coordination and gross activity of the hands, arms, legs and trunk. Both unilateral and bilateral motor tasks are involved in the scale. Because of this fact, fifty-three test items involve right and left limb performances. The time for administering all the items is usually less than one hour.
The purpose of this study was to determine whether or not the number of …

Regeneration Of The Tentacles And Eyes Of The Marine Snail Ilyanassa Obsoleta Stimpson, W. Ernest Collins Jr.
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
The study consisted of two major steps: (1) A macroscopic study was undertaken to determine whether or not the eye and tentacles of a gastropod which exhibits a mosaic development pattern could regenerate. (2) A study was undertaken using histological techniques to determine the detailed step-by-step process of regeneration of the eye and tentacle in Ilyanassa obsoleta.
Samuel Daniel: His Importance As A Literary Figure, Ronald Gaffney
Samuel Daniel: His Importance As A Literary Figure, Ronald Gaffney
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
An investigation of the literary conventions and an evaluation of the way they are employed by Daniel will help to provide some indication of his literary importance. To examine the traditional conventions he uses will, to some degree, indicate where Daniel fits into the literary society of the Elizabethan Age. A study of some of his innovations and a few of his distinctive ways of using traditional motifs will help to demonstrate his overall importance to literature.
Edgar Allan Poe's Criticism Of The Novel, James Gage
Edgar Allan Poe's Criticism Of The Novel, James Gage
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Edgar Allan Poe wrote forty-three critical reviews of novels during the period 1_835 to 1848 that he was associated with the various literary journals in the East. And, although his best known critical works concern themselves with the tale and with poetry, his statements regarding the novel are of sufficient quantity to merit scholarly research. Yet investigation of the major bibliographic sources reveals this to be not at all the case. Thus, this thesis snail endeavor to place some substance in the void of scholarship concerning Poe's criticism lf the novel with the hope that this substance might provide ample …

Goticism In Matthew G. Lewis's The Monk & Related Works, Larry Harrel
Goticism In Matthew G. Lewis's The Monk & Related Works, Larry Harrel
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Lewis repeatedly revealed himself to be concerned with effect: in his statement that he desired to increase effect by heightening the color of The Monk and in his statements concerning his goal in The Castle Spectre there is the recurrent theme of desire to horrify. This desire has been shown to grow out of the aesthetic ideal of sublimity which was developed in years preceding The Monk. The implicit defect in this concept is that it may be used to justify sensational works which lack lasting merit, as was largely the case with The Castle Spectre, not …
American Intercollegiate Debate: A General Survey With Emphasis On Past & Present Controversies, 1892-1968, Carolyn Harrison
American Intercollegiate Debate: A General Survey With Emphasis On Past & Present Controversies, 1892-1968, Carolyn Harrison
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Since its inception, intercollegiate debate has not only survived storms of controversy and periods of great change but has grown and matured into a vital part of almost every speech department across the country. Today, tournaments are more numerous than ever; the debaters are more plentiful and just as enthusiastic (even if spectators are not). Even though intercollegiate debate has withstood the struggles of its beginning and the ensuing growing pains, maturity has not brought an end to the problems and controversies. Many present day controversies--such as the value of debate, the value of the tournaments, and the type of …

Physique And The Self-Fulfilling Prophecy, Stuart Storey
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Young people today are confronted with many problems in their everyday lives. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between physique, which was considered to be one of the major factors influencing attitude and behavior, and the type and number of problem and worry items which high school freshmen students experience. …

The Desirability And Feasibility Of Intercollegiate Sports For College Women, Leigh F. Kieffer
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
The primary purpose of this study is to examine the present programs of physical education in Kentucky colleges; to determine the degree to which they meet the competitive sports needs of college women; and to explore the possibilities for enriching the program and to make recommendations for correcting inadequacies.
In considering the inclusion of a program of intercollegiate sports competition for college women, three questions are basic. First, what criteria should be used for evaluating present programs and determining the developing of an intercollegiate program for women? Second, what is the status of Kentucky colleges with regard to these pertinent …
Solid State Electrolysis Of Yttria Stablized Zirconia, John Newman
Solid State Electrolysis Of Yttria Stablized Zirconia, John Newman
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Zirconium dioxide, or zirconia, is seemingly an ideal refractory oxide, having a high melting point (2680°C), low thermal expansion and also a considerable resistance to most forms of chemical attack. Early researchers soon found that zirconia, in the pure form, was actually of very limited use as a refractory because of sudden and disruptive volume changes accompanying a change in crystal structure which occurs at a temperature of about 1100 o C. It was discovered that this crystal structure change could be suppressed by the addition of one of a number of alkaline earth or rare earth oxides. These additive …
