Bibliotherapy In The Helping Professions: A Heuristic Model For Intervention Design, Natalie Marie Haney Dec 2022

Bibliotherapy In The Helping Professions: A Heuristic Model For Intervention Design, Natalie Marie Haney

Masters Theses

I propose a new approach to examining bibliotherapy’s usefulness in the community-based care of individuals with serious mental illness (SMI), focused on producing a heuristic that benefits helping professionals who offer non-clinical and non-psychiatric services. Meant for writers designing bibliotherapy interventions in the helping professions, I conceptualize bibliotherapy in a model against the backdrop of community-based care’s history. A model has the potential to allow each writer to conduct situation-specific inquiry, invent bibliotherapy intervention designs suited to the unique needs of the profession’s help-seekers, and reflect on knowledge generated for intervention reiteration. Referring to Dewey, Rosenblatt and Barnlund to create …

Revisiting The Future: The Future Indicative And Perfective Aspect In Johannine Literature, Casey Lou Price May 2022

Revisiting The Future: The Future Indicative And Perfective Aspect In Johannine Literature, Casey Lou Price

Masters Theses

As Greek aspectual studies continue to develop, there remains a significant gap in research on the future as it pertains to aspect. The nature of the future indicative is debated, especially as to whether or not it conveys aspectual value. Using Buist Fanning’s premise that aspect and Aktionsart interact to produce predicable outcomes, Mark O’Brien has shown that future STATIVE verbs consistently create an ingressive meaning that mirrors that of STATIVE verbs in the aorist tense. He has used this to demonstrate that the aorist and future share the same aspect-Aktionsart interactions and that they therefore both communicate perfective aspect. …

The Theological Implications Of Κατάπαυσίν And Σαββατισμὸς In Hebrews 3:7–4:11, Sean M. Best

Masters Theses

This thesis will argue that rest in Hebrews is entering into humanity’s rightful place, ruling over creation with God, in the full image of God, as intended by God since the seventh day. Rest in the book of Hebrews is a vitally important theme. The word for rest in Greek is κατάπαυσίν and is used eight times in Hebrews 3–4. The definition of rest determines the crux of understanding the warning passage by the author of Hebrews. The basic lexical definition of this word is “rest” or “resting place.” While a basic gloss of the Greek term κατάπαυσίν is easy …

Ela And Esl Educators’ Lived Experiences In Urban, Middle Level, Mainstream Classrooms, Georgia Danos

Masters Theses

This ethnographic qualitative study explores best practices for English Language Learning (ELL) students by analyzing one particular co-taught 8th grade English Language Arts (ELA) classroom where students received instruction from both a trained ELA teacher and one certified in English as a Second Language (ESL). The results suggest that the ELA mainstream teacher, Mr. Scott, was disengaged in class; disinterested in his students; unaware of his students’ backgrounds and needs; unaware of professional development offered; resistant and resentful towards new pedagogical approaches; tentatively interested in but unaware of best practices; displayed unprofessionalism; and indifferent about students' academic success. The ESL …

The Letter To Sardis And Eternal Security, Tory Arnesen May 2017

The Letter To Sardis And Eternal Security, Tory Arnesen

Masters Theses

Does the letter to Sardis threaten eternal security? The research concerning the context of the letter, word studies for overcome, Book of Life, and an exegetical analysis reveal that the letter is both a warning and a comfort. The warning is directed to the lost people in the church as well as those without assurance, and the comfort is for the genuine believers. Eternal security is not threatened, but an exhortation to ensure that one is in the faith is present in the letter.

Identifying And Interpreting A Philosophical Garden At The Villa Of The Papyri At Herculaneum, Antonio Robert Lopiano May 2017

Identifying And Interpreting A Philosophical Garden At The Villa Of The Papyri At Herculaneum, Antonio Robert Lopiano

Masters Theses

The Villa of the Papyri is one of the most important archaeological sites from Roman antiquity for its preserved architecture, library, and art collection. All three of these would be truly remarkable in their own right, but their combined presence in one site has drawn scholars to study the villa for centuries. This thesis contributes to this corpus of work by examining the west peristyle garden at the Villa of the Papyri and proposing the presence of a philosophical garden therein. This hypothesis is supported through analysis of ancient authors, archaeological research of the region, and evidence from the villa …

John Damascene In Context: An Examination Of "The Heresy Of The Ishmaelites" With Special Consideration Given To The Religious, Political, And Social Contexts During The Seventh And Eighth Century Arab Conquests, D. Bryan Rhodes May 2009

John Damascene In Context: An Examination Of "The Heresy Of The Ishmaelites" With Special Consideration Given To The Religious, Political, And Social Contexts During The Seventh And Eighth Century Arab Conquests, D. Bryan Rhodes

Masters Theses

John Damascene's work concerning "The Heresy of the Ishmaelites" confronts Islam--a heresy according to John--with respect to fundamental disagreements between Christians and Muslims concerning the deity of Christ, the doctrine of the Trinity and the authenticity of Muhammad's prophethood and revelation. I argue that John's work was prompted and influenced by his context in seventh-and eighth-century Byzantium. More specifically, my argument is that John's firsthand understanding of Islam, the new rhetoric of a heavenward focus within what had been the Roman empire, the development of apologies and disputations concerning Islam, and the growing tensions in Christian-Arab relations in eighth-century Byzantium …

Examining The Septuagint: An Exploration Of The Greek Old Testament's Unique Heritage And Lasting Impact On The New Testament, Cara Lynne Murphy Oct 2007

Examining The Septuagint: An Exploration Of The Greek Old Testament's Unique Heritage And Lasting Impact On The New Testament, Cara Lynne Murphy

Masters Theses

The Greek Old Testament has been a focus of speculation and study since its entrance into the religious culture of the Diasporic Jews. Legends and myths surround the creation of the Septuagint, and its use by the New Testament authors only added to the questions surrounding this ancient text. The questions this thesis will seek to address are three-fold. First, what does historical evidence prove regarding the origin of the Septuagint? The dating, the location, and the nature of the Septuagint’s creation are each open debates within biblical scholarship. While this thesis will not attempt to prove conclusively the answers …

Recommendations are offered for teachers and other adults who may wish to use these or similar books in working with children who are experiencing anger-provoking situations.

Intellectuals And Nationalism In Cyprus: A Study Of The Role Of Intellectuals In The 1931 Uprising, Georgios P. Loizides Aug 1999

Intellectuals And Nationalism In Cyprus: A Study Of The Role Of Intellectuals In The 1931 Uprising, Georgios P. Loizides

Masters Theses

My thesis addresses the role of Cypriot intellectuals in the nationalist movement aiming at the political union of Cyprus with Greece. In particular, it will examine the contribution of three intellectual categories to the 1931 uprising, namely clerics, teachers, and journalists. The 1931 nationalist uprising was the first Greek nationalist mass movement in Cyprus, and can be seen as laying the ground for the 1955-1960 armed struggle against the British, who were the colonial rulers of the island at the time. Furthermore, I argue that over and above the petty interests of modernized urban elites, it was the accommodation of …

The Origins Of Greek Cypriot National Identity, Elena Koumna Dec 1998

The Origins Of Greek Cypriot National Identity, Elena Koumna

Masters Theses

Discussions of Greek Cypriot identity have conventionally been dominated by primordial arguments, contributing to the creation and maintenance of stereotypes and mythologies about the ethnic conflict between Greek and Turkish Cypriots. In order to examine the validity of the primordial thesis, modernist and constructionist approaches on nationalism and identity are considered (Gellner 1983; Hobsbawm 1990; Anderson 1991; Hroch 1985; Smith 1991). Nationalism and identity formation are analyzed in the context of"stages," where the social composition of each stage and the degree of modernization are examined. The findings of the thesis largely support the hypotheses that pinpoint the articulation of Greek …

The Greek Miracle : An Artificial Life Simulation Of The Effects Of Literacy On The Dynamics Of Communication, Andrew Douglas Digh Dec 1994

The Greek Miracle : An Artificial Life Simulation Of The Effects Of Literacy On The Dynamics Of Communication, Andrew Douglas Digh

Masters Theses

The period of time during the fourth and fifth centuries B.C., when the Greek society moved out of the Dark Ages and into the "golden" period of so many great scientific, philosophical, and literary achievements, has often been called the "Greek Miracle." Many historians claim this cultural shift of Greece was "pro- foundly influenced" by the introduction of alphabetic literacy to the population.

After discussing this impact from a humanities standpoint, an artificial life simulation is used to investigate the dynamics of communication found in both a primarily oral population as well as a literate one. In each simulation, we …

A Study Of The Preservation Of The Classical Tradition In The Education, Language, And Literature Of The Byzantine Empire, Germaine Manuel Apr 1989

A Study Of The Preservation Of The Classical Tradition In The Education, Language, And Literature Of The Byzantine Empire, Germaine Manuel

Masters Theses

The medieval Byzantine world can be perceived as a cultural anomaly in the history of western civilization. During the entire course of its existence, those who endeavored to preserve the light of learning drew inspiration from the classical heritage of Greece and Rome. The education, literature, and language of Byzantium were modeled on what had been bequeathed by the classical world of centuries past.

This paper endeavors to examine the integral role played by the ancient pagan legacy in the curriculum that was followed in Byzantine schools; to illustrate the very potent influence exerted by Homer in the learning and …

A Study Of The Development Of Organized Religion In Jefferson County, Tennessee (1785-1950), James Earl Cockrum

Masters Theses

The present work is concerned with the organized expression of religious feeling in one Tennessee county. It attempts to trace the historical development of religious organization in its geographic setting and to discover some of the social, political, and economic factors which have influenced the direction of development. It also seeks evidence as to the influence which organized religion has exerted on development in directions not usually associated with religion.

Limitations of time and space prevented exploration in minute detail of many historical points of much interest. As points of reference for help in evaluation of materials and conclusions an …
