White-Tailed Deer Crown Height Measurements And Mortality Profiles From The Hayes Site, Middle Tennessee, Renee Beauchamp Dec 1993

White-Tailed Deer Crown Height Measurements And Mortality Profiles From The Hayes Site, Middle Tennessee, Renee Beauchamp

Masters Theses

Previous research at the Hays Site (40ML139) prompted an investigation of white-tailed deer remains from the site. An evaluation of aging techniques revealed that the dental crown height measurement technique is the best method for aging white-tailed deer. A regression formula was developed with a known-age sample of Mississippi white-tailed deer. An investigation of mortality profile interpretations defines attritional, living structure, and prime-dominated mortality profiles. The mortality profile interpretations are used to define seasonality and hunting intensity for the white-tailed deer from the Hayes site. A modified iterated age length key is used to derive mortality profiles. Results for hunting …

Wastewater Treatment Using A Constructed Wetland And Recirculating Gravel Filter System, Gregory Lynn Askew Dec 1993

Wastewater Treatment Using A Constructed Wetland And Recirculating Gravel Filter System, Gregory Lynn Askew

Masters Theses

The use of constructed wetlands (CW) and recirculating gravel filters (RGF) as a wastewater treatment system was demonstrated at a municipal treatment plant. The demonstration was a proof-of-concept test for the use of RGFs to treat CW effluent for ammonia. Inadequate ammonia conversion by nitrification is characteristic of most CWs in operation. Additionally, total nitrogen removal was planned by discharging the nitrified RGF effluent at the head of the CW which was typically anoxic. Three existing CWs (two free water surface and one subsurface flow), each with an area of 1.46 ha, were used to treat effluent from a 6.47 …

Polymer-Supported Reagents Utilized In The Synthesis Of Radiopharmaceuticals, Karla Renee Bowers Dec 1993

Polymer-Supported Reagents Utilized In The Synthesis Of Radiopharmaceuticals, Karla Renee Bowers

Masters Theses

Single Photon Emission Computed Tomography (SPECT) is a medical imaging technique which provides three-dimensional images of living systems after infusion of radiolabeled chemical compounds. These radiolabeled pharmaceuticals must be synthesized and delivered to the patient quickly to ensure that loss of the radiolabel is minimal. This means that the synthesis and handling of the imaging agent should be efficient and as simple as possible. Current methods of radioiodination involve lengthy purification techniques usually via column chromatography. The use of polymer supported hydrides for radioiodinations could eliminate the need for such purifications by making possible the removal of polymer-bound by-products by …

The Effects Of Limiting The Domain Pool Size On Fractal Image Compression, Robert William Mauck Dec 1993

The Effects Of Limiting The Domain Pool Size On Fractal Image Compression, Robert William Mauck

Masters Theses

Fractal image compression describes an image by storing the relationship between different regions of an image in the form of contractive affine transforms. This technique provides extremely high compression rates while maintaining good image fidelity and rapid access to the image. The disadvantage of this technique is the intensive computational requirements for image compression. Computational requirements can be reduced by minimizing the number of comparisons that must be made.

A set of domains and ranges were defined over each image compressed. For each range a domain pool was defined consisting of all domains within a given distance (in pixels) from …

Identification Of Temperate Rainforest Environments In The Southern Appalachians, Michael J. Daly Dec 1993

Identification Of Temperate Rainforest Environments In The Southern Appalachians, Michael J. Daly

Masters Theses

The natural vegetation of the Southern Appalachian region included exceptional cove forests exhibiting characteristics typically associated with temperate rainforest formations. Human impacts over the past few centuries have almost completely eliminated these exceptional forests. The distribution of environments capable of supporting these forests is controlled regionally by climate, and locally by topography. The Thornthwaite climatic classification is applied in the context of a GIS to identify the regional extent of the temperate rainforest (perhumid) climate under both average and drought conditions. A GIS database incorporating manually-derived topographic data and land use and forest vegetation data derived from a 1990 Landsat …

The Importance Of The Residual Layer In Characterizing Ozone Episodes In East Tennessee, Eric Kevin Hutton Dec 1993

The Importance Of The Residual Layer In Characterizing Ozone Episodes In East Tennessee, Eric Kevin Hutton

Masters Theses

This thesis was written to characterize episodes of high concentrations in East Tennessee. The trajectory ozone analysis of high pressure air masses revealed that the trajectory of a high pressure system impacting East Tennessee was not as important as whether the system stagnated. Four ozone episodes have also been analyzed. In May 1992, stations representative of the residual layer observed an excellent example of a nocturnal increase of ozone due to regional transport that contrasted a simultaneous decrease in ozone concentrations at nearby low altitude monitors. Using ozone isopleth maps and comparisons of individual stations representative of the residual layer …

Properties And Site Substitutions For Ternary Chromium Additions To B2 Iron Aluminides, Sanjeev Khosla

Masters Theses

The equiatomic and iron-rich ordered iron aluminides are potential medium temperature materials because of their low cost and good elevated temperature properties. However, their chief drawback is their brittleness at room temperature. Attempts have and are being made to increase their ductility by alloying. It has also been established that the site preference of the ternary element could affect the mechanical properties of these aluminides. A study was made of the site substitution of Cr in the B2 FeAl using the variable x-ray energy of a synchrotron source. Seven compositions were chosen of which three were binary FeAl alloys. It …

Nothing That Is So Is So : Disguise And Identity In William Shakespeare's Twelfth Night And Sir Philip Sidney's The Old Arcadia, Laura Antoinette Pritchard

Masters Theses

This thesis compares Shakespeare's festive comedy, Twelfth Night, to Sir Philip Sidney's pastoral romance, The Old Arcadia, in terms of their use of disguise and mistaken identity. The characters must overcome these obstacles of mistaken identities, mistaken beliefs, and disguises so they can find their true identities and re-establish the social order that was disrupted at the beginning of each work. The two works are complementary. By examining their genres, the way they both portray nature, the social order, providence, the folly of self-love, and losing the self to find the self, I have shown that by considering these issues …
