Numerical Modeling Of Infrared Thermography Techniques Via Ansys, Hayder Abdulnabi Thajeel

Masters Theses

"Several inspection techniques have been developed over years. Recently, infrared thermography (IRT) technology has become a widely accepted as a nondestructive inspection (NDI) technique for different fields and various applications as well. Infrared thermography stands as one of the most an attractive and a successful NDI technique that has ability to detect the object's surface/subsurface defects remotely based on observing and measuring the surface's emitted infrared heat radiation by using an infrared camera. The finite element modeling FEM ANSYS was successfully used for the modelling of several IRT techniques; such as Pulsed Thermography (PT) and Lock-in Thermography (LT) that can …

Native Plant Establishment Success Influenced By Centaurea Stoebe Control Method, Laurelin Marie Martin Dec 2013

Native Plant Establishment Success Influenced By Centaurea Stoebe Control Method, Laurelin Marie Martin

Masters Theses

Invasive species frequently hinder restoration efforts. While the effectiveness of differing control methods are often reported, the impacts these methods have on the establishment of a native plant community are often unknown. To determine methods that effectively reduce spotted knapweed (Centaurea stoebe) while enhancing native species establishment, we tested 12 treatment combinations consisting of an initial site preparation (mowing, mowing + clopyralid, or mowing + glyphosate), with combinations of annual adult knapweed hand pulling, and/or burning. We established 48 plots and applied site preparation treatments during summer 2008, seeded 23 native forbs and grasses during spring 2009, pulled …

Inkjet Printing Of Titanium Dioxide Photoanodes For Dye Sensitized Solar Cells, Jeffrey Corbet Johnson Dec 2013

Inkjet Printing Of Titanium Dioxide Photoanodes For Dye Sensitized Solar Cells, Jeffrey Corbet Johnson

Masters Theses

Dye Sensitized Solar Cells (DSSC) offer advantages over semiconductor solar cells including lower costs and relaxed material purity requirements. However, DSSC solar energy conversion efficiencies are lower than many competing photovoltaic technologies. Key to DSSC performance is the incorporation of nanocrystalline metal oxides to provide a large surface area for photosensitive dye loading. Titanium dioxide (TiO2) is the predominately used metal oxide. The structure of the TiO2 layer determines charge transfer efficiency and the level of generated photocurrent. Common practice for high performance cells is to deposit a thin, compact TiO2 coating followed by a thicker, more porous …

Effects Of Nonylphenol On Orientation By The Crayfish Orconectes Propinquus, Kathryn J. Page

Masters Theses

Nonylphenol is a widely used surfactant subject to ethoxylation and subsists in the environment for significant amounts of time. It has industrial, agricultural, and domestic uses, and makes its way into the aquatic ecosystem despite treatment of wastewater. Detrimental effects of nonylphenol are varied, but most notably endocrine disruption has been examined. Crayfish are a crucial invertebrate in freshwater ecosystems. They are omnivorous, and occupy a key position in the trophic web as both predator and prey. To determine if nonylphenol exposure has any effect on the orientation abilities of crayfish, I acutely (1 day) and chronically (4 days) exposed …

Changes In Vascular Reactivity Of Mesenteric Arteries Following Hyperbaric Oxygen Treatment, Benjamin Matthew Hake Dec 2013

Changes In Vascular Reactivity Of Mesenteric Arteries Following Hyperbaric Oxygen Treatment, Benjamin Matthew Hake

Masters Theses

The objective of this study was to evaluate the changes in vascular reactivity of mesenteric arteries resulting from hyperbaric oxygen treatment. It was hypothesized that hyperbaric oxygen treatment alters vascular reactivity in mesenteric arteries due to enhanced production of ATP resulting in significantly larger responses to vasoactive stimuli. All arteries were dissected from porcine mesenteries and placed in Krebs- Henseleit solution. Arteries were initially mounted in isolated organ baths and passively loaded with tensions ranging from 1 to 25 grams at odd intervals to ascertain the optimal passive tension for studying mesenteric arteries. Following a 1-hour equilibration in Krebs-Henseleit solution, …

Standardized Longitudinal Connection Detail For Decked Precast Prestressed Concrete Girders, Ramzi Muftah Ali Abduallah

Masters Theses

The use of decked precast prestressed concrete girders (DPPCG) is becoming popular in accelerated bridge construction. DPPCGs are assembled and connected on site using grout or concrete longitudinal connections. The durability performance of these connections is a concern. The objective of this research is to document the longitudinal connection behavior with respect to its design parameters, and establish a process for developing a standardized connection detail considering the demands due to live load and temperature gradient (TG) load. In order to demonstrate this process, decked bulb-tee and decked box-beam girders were considered. Finite element models, under various types and levels …

Stratigraphic Controls On Diagenetic Pathways In The St. Peter Sandstone, Michigan Basin, Stephen A. Zdan Dec 2013

Stratigraphic Controls On Diagenetic Pathways In The St. Peter Sandstone, Michigan Basin, Stephen A. Zdan

Masters Theses

The Middle Ordovician St. Peter Sandstone in the Michigan Basin is a target for hydrocarbon exploration/production, and carbon sequestration and geologic storage. The St. Peter is predominantly a marine sandstone with four dominant lithofacies. The uppermost facies contains zones of porosity and good reservoir quality. Because of the mostly uniform detrital composition, diagenesis must play a leading role in reservoir quality development. This study tests stratigraphic controls on diagenesis and reservoir quality development. The distribution of diagenetic regimes is believed to result from depositional setting and related geologic processes, including variations in sediment accumulation rate. Early carbonate cements preserve pre-compaction …

Refugee Reflections: A Focus On The Lived Experiences Of African Refugees Resettling In Michigan, Diane Roushangar Dec 2013

Refugee Reflections: A Focus On The Lived Experiences Of African Refugees Resettling In Michigan, Diane Roushangar

Masters Theses

Refugee resettlement is often observed by focusing on external indicators of integration such as employment and English proficiency. What is often ignored is the multi-faceted process refugees experience in regard to the emotions that occur during these transitions of resettlement. Emotional stressors include financial concerns, work-related issues, a lack of adequate counseling services and ESL support that can all lead to increased anxiety. This paper examines the process of resettlement that northeast African and sub-Saharan African refugees have experienced including issues of unsafe working conditions, changing gender roles, and a lack of adequate time for adjusting to the culture.

The Relationships Between Internalized Heterosexism, Spirituality, And Mental Health In Lesbian, Gay, And Bisexual Young Adults, Jon Raymond Bourn

Masters Theses

Minority stressors like internalized heterosexism have been found to be related to suicidality among lesbian, gay, and bisexual (LGB) individuals (e.g., Savin-Williams & Ream, 2003). Additional research is needed, however, to better understand the factors that may serve as moderators (i.e., protective factors) in the relationships between minority stressors and negative mental health outcomes, such as depression and suicidality (e.g., Szymanski et al., 2008). The current study attempted to examine the relationships between internalized heterosexism and two negative mental health outcomes associated with suicide, psychache (defined as unbearable psychological pain) and depression, in a sample of LGB young adults. Given …

Investigation Of Composite Patch Performance Under Low-Velocity Impact Loading, Geoffrey Roy Goodmiller Dec 2013

Investigation Of Composite Patch Performance Under Low-Velocity Impact Loading, Geoffrey Roy Goodmiller

Masters Theses

Bonded fiber composite repair on damaged metal structures can be an effective method to restore load carrying capacity or increase damage resistance. Low velocity impacts can cause barely visible damage to the interior structure of laminated composites. Delamination between plies is of particular concern in these composites. Impacts may also create disbonds between the patch and metal substrate. A building-block approach was suggested to model impact damage to composite patches. Composite, adhesive, and metal substrate damage models were separately validated and then combined. Cohesive Zone theory modeled interlaminar composite damage and adhesive damage. Hashin failure criteria with energy dissipation based …

A Privacy-Aware Distributed Storage And Replication Middleware For Heterogeneous Computing Platform, Jilong Liao Dec 2013

A Privacy-Aware Distributed Storage And Replication Middleware For Heterogeneous Computing Platform, Jilong Liao

Masters Theses

Cloud computing is an emerging research area that has drawn considerable interest in recent years. However, the current infrastructure raises significant concerns about how to protect users' privacy, in part due to that users are storing their data in the cloud vendors' servers. In this paper, we address this challenge by proposing and implementing a novel middleware, called Uno, which separates the storage of physical data and their associated metadata. In our design, users' physical data are stored locally on those devices under a user's full control, while their metadata can be uploaded to the commercial cloud. To ensure the …

Arm Inductance And Sub-Module Capacitance Selection In Modular Multilevel Converter, Yalong Li Dec 2013

Arm Inductance And Sub-Module Capacitance Selection In Modular Multilevel Converter, Yalong Li

Masters Theses

Arm inductor and sub-module (SM) capacitor are two key components in the modular multilevel converter (MMC). Optimizing the selection of arm inductance and sub-module capacitance is thus critical for the converter design. This report aims at developing a selection principle for arm inductance and sub-module capacitance in MMC.

Arm inductors in MMC are used to limit the circulating current which flows within the converter. The switching frequency harmonic is found to be the dominant component in the circulating current when an active circulating current suppressing controller is implemented. The analytical relationship between the arm inductance and switching frequency circulating current …

Investigation Of The One-Probe And Two-Probe Calibration Integral Equation Methods Using Experimental Data, Abhay Sanjeev Pande Dec 2013

Investigation Of The One-Probe And Two-Probe Calibration Integral Equation Methods Using Experimental Data, Abhay Sanjeev Pande

Masters Theses

This work aims to expand the applicability of the recently devised physics-based Calibration Integral Equation Method (CIEM) at the University of Tennessee Knoxville, for solving the Inverse Heat Conduction Problem (IHCP) as applied to a one-dimensional domain. Contrary to conventional schemes of solving the IHCP, the CIEM does not require the knowledge of the thermo-physical properties of the domain, sensor characterization and sensor probe locations. The pertinent information is implicitly accounted for via an experimental run. The experimental run ‘calibrates’ the physics of the domain and is called the ‘calibration run’. The net surface heat flux during a real ‘unknown’ …

Time Dependent Density-Functional Theory - Linear Response, Bryan Edman Sundahl Dec 2013

Time Dependent Density-Functional Theory - Linear Response, Bryan Edman Sundahl

Masters Theses

The formal derivation of the linear response of time-dependent density-functional theory as shown by E. K. U. Gross is presented. The transformation of formal theory to the working linear response equations in the form of Casida's eigenvalue equation is demonstrated, and the results are applied to small monatomic, diatomic and triatomic systems. The application of different operators to the perturbed density is discussed, with the most attention being given to the dynamic polarizabilities. The dynamic polarizabilities and excitation spectra for N2 [nitrogen gas] are then analyzed. The first excitation energy is noted to be in line with Koopmans' theorem. …

Issues Of Commingling Within The Gold Mine Site (16ri13) Collection: Adult Human Humeri And Tibiae, Kinsey Brett Stewart

Masters Theses

Gold Mine (16RI13) is a Troyville ossuary mound site (circa CE 825) in northeastern Louisiana. Approximately 10-20% of the primary mound (Mound A) was excavated over the course of three field seasons (1978-1980), yielding a host of human skeletal remains. Extensively commingled secondary burials make up the majority of interments. The number of individuals represented within the collection (N) has been estimated at 150+ (McGimsey 2004:214), but attempts to quantitatively determine N have produced varied results. Formal analysis of the skeletal collection is complicated by the loss of provenience for many remains as well as additional post-excavation fragmentation …

Effect Of Disjoining Pressure And Working Fluid On Multi-Scale Modeling For Evaporative Liquid Metal Capillary, Hunju Yi Dec 2013

Effect Of Disjoining Pressure And Working Fluid On Multi-Scale Modeling For Evaporative Liquid Metal Capillary, Hunju Yi

Masters Theses

This research presents a new multiscale model of an evaporating liquid metal capillary meniscus under nonequilibrium evaporation sustaining a nonisothermal interface.

The primary investigation is elaborated on to examine the critical role of the disjoining pressure, which consists of both the traditional van der Waals component and a new electronic pressure component, for the case of liquid metals. The fully extended dispersion force is modeled along with an electronic disjoining pressure component that is unique to liquid metals attributing to their abundant free electrons. For liquid alkali metals (sodium and lithium), as a favorable coolant for high temperature two-phase devices, …

Formulation And Evaluation Of Resistive Inks For Applications In Printed Electronics, Sughosh Satish Bhore Dec 2013

Formulation And Evaluation Of Resistive Inks For Applications In Printed Electronics, Sughosh Satish Bhore

Masters Theses

In the 21st century, it has been shown that printing methodologies can be used to print electrically functional devices on a variety of substrates. In comparison to conventional electronic manufacturing methods, printing is a more cost effective and less complex process. The requirements for manufacturing Printed Electronics (PE) components are much more demanding than graphic printing applications due to the additional requirement of easy electron flow. This additional requirement increases the need for print uniformity and layer-to-layer registration to a much higher degree. In this work, hybrid UV-curable, water-based, electrical resistive inks were formulated. Inkjet inks were prepared by …

Utilizing Persistent Scatterer Interferometry To Investigate The Nature And Factors Controlling Nile Delta Subsidence, El Hachemi Yousef Bouali Dec 2013

Utilizing Persistent Scatterer Interferometry To Investigate The Nature And Factors Controlling Nile Delta Subsidence, El Hachemi Yousef Bouali

Masters Theses

The Nile Delta in Egypt is being threatened by two continuous and relatively slow hazards: encroachment from the Mediterranean Sea as sea levels rise and land subsidence of the delta itself. The magnitude of sea level rise has been actively monitored, while the subsidence of the Nile Delta has not been adequately quantified spatially and temporally. Instead, all previous studies have either focused on measuring average Holocene subsidence rates or modern subsidence rates on local scales (point- or city-scale).

The overall study objective is three-fold: (1) to measure and map the spatial variations in subsidence rates across the entire Nile …

An Assessment Of Public Outreach With Children And Educators Conducted By The Fort St. Joseph Archaeological Project, Erica A. D’Elia

Masters Theses

Archaeological public outreach to children can be enhanced through collaboration with school educators. While archaeologists have begun to collaborate with local and descendant communities, they have been slow to engage in work with educators in the same manner. The Fort St. Joseph Archaeological Project provides the context for me to explore some of the current issues in public archaeology and the politics of education. My study was conducted to better understand the needs of both children and teachers. In my work with the archaeological summer camp for middle school students I seek to conceptualize how the camp enhances their educational …

Silence, Declaration, And Circumstance: Rethinking Women’S Roles In Saudi Arabia, Ashleigh Elizabeth Dunham Dec 2013

Silence, Declaration, And Circumstance: Rethinking Women’S Roles In Saudi Arabia, Ashleigh Elizabeth Dunham

Masters Theses

The canon of academic research on Saudi Arabian women still fails to address the stereotypical images that represent them. While Anglo-American models of feminism may benefit American women, they cannot and should not be a lens through which Americans view Saudi women, as American and Saudi cultures are fundamentally different. Because of this issue, Anglo-American feminism along with the obvious problems of racism and Islamophobia contribute to the American assumption that Saudi Arabian women lack agency and control of their lives. The resulting ideologies continue to influence American ideas about Saudi Arabian women’s access to the opportunities that non-Saudi women …
