Effect Of Calendaring On Flexographic Print Ability Of Linerboard, William P. Woods Dec 1999

Effect Of Calendaring On Flexographic Print Ability Of Linerboard, William P. Woods

Masters Theses

Today's corrugated board end user demands a higher quality than ever. Retailing techniques are moving toward so-called ''value-added packaging," which consists of high quality printed packaging that works to sell the product from the shelf. To preserve'its dominance in the corrugated market, the flexographic printing industry must find new ways to cost effectively satisfy the new demands.

One possibility is the use of an additional calendering step to give the linerboard better printability. This study evaluated two different types of calenders: the shoe (extended nip) calender and the hot/soft nip calender (Appendix A). The test material was commercially produced linerboard, …

Calibration, Installation Techniques, And Initial Measurements For Vertical Resistivity Probes Used In Hydrogeologic Investigations, Jeffrey Mark Groncki Dec 1999

Calibration, Installation Techniques, And Initial Measurements For Vertical Resistivity Probes Used In Hydrogeologic Investigations, Jeffrey Mark Groncki

Masters Theses

Vertical Resistivity Probes (VRPs) are being increasingly used in a variety of applications where detailed vertical resistivity information in both the vadose and saturated zones is needed. All the different possible array types and spacings must be calibrated for the effect of the 2" (outer diameter) insulating PVC cylinder on which the electrodes are mounted. Apparent resistivities must be corrected by calibration factors. Varying the installation parameters greatly influences the measured apparent resistivity because of the disturbed annulus and the composition of the backfill materials. Bentonite slurry is necessary for the installations to keep the electrodes in good contact with …

Quantifying A Key Injection Molding Attribute Defect, Kristopher Bryan Horton Dec 1999

Quantifying A Key Injection Molding Attribute Defect, Kristopher Bryan Horton

Masters Theses

A mounting demand for high quality, low cost plastic injection molded products brings with it goals such as low or even zero defects. In order to achieve these types of "world class" expectations, resources are used to monitor and control variable data such as cycle time, part weight or dimensions. Despite this emphasis on variable data, parts are often rejected based on attribute molding defects such as sink marks or splay that are measured by subjective criteria and therefore difficult to control. Appearance of a part once considered acceptable may no longer be, due to changing expectations or subjective interpretation …

Fundamental Study Of The Coating And Basesheet Influences On Gloss In Relationship To Coated Inkjet Papers, Raja Ramakrishnan Dec 1999

Fundamental Study Of The Coating And Basesheet Influences On Gloss In Relationship To Coated Inkjet Papers, Raja Ramakrishnan

Masters Theses

The use of fumed metallic oxides for glossy ink jet media offers alternatives to expensive cast coated and extruded film methods. Fumed metallic oxide pigments provide a high internal porosity and packing porosity that enable the rapid diffusion of liquid inks into the coating layer. Their small particle size (0.1-0.3μm), enable the development of gloss. However, calendering is needed to develop gloss values in the range of cast coated and extruded film grades.

Calendering of coated sheet reduces production speed, adds additional handling and rewinding cost (if performed off-line) and reduces the bulk and porosity of the coating layer, consequently …

Synthesis Of Novel Bifunctional Polymers For Selective Metal Ion Complexation, Minjeong Hong Dec 1999

Synthesis Of Novel Bifunctional Polymers For Selective Metal Ion Complexation, Minjeong Hong

Masters Theses

Polymer supported reagents were synthesized by functionalization of polymer supports for the purpose of selective metal ion separation. Three categories of polymer supports with different microenvironments were prepared. Vinylbenzyl chloride (VBC) crosslinked with 2% divinylbenzene was copolymerized with either methyl methacrylate (MMA) to give a polar environment or styrene (STY) to give a hydrophobic environment. Different oligo ethyleneimines and phosphonic acid were used as ligands in the synthesis of monofunctional resins. Bifunctional aminophosphonic acid resins were prepared by phosphorylation of ethyleneimine ligands. The characterization of the resins shows that as the length of the ethyleneimine ligand increases, more crosslinking takes …

Ectocranial Suture Closure : A Revisitation Of Meindl And Lovejoy, Chauntelle Suzanne Hardin

Masters Theses

In 1985, Meindl and Lovejoy presented a revised methodology for aging crania using ectocranial sutures. They stated that race and sex are do not affect the accuracy of their method and, several other researchers, as well point out that race and sex do affect other aging methods. I used visual and statistical means to resolve the issue of whether or not race and sex affected the accuracy of Meindl and Lovejoy's methodology in aging crania. This study examined 310 crania: 18 from the William M. Bass Donated Skeletal Collection housed in the Forensic Anthropology Center at the University of Tennessee- …

George Campbell And The Ethics Of Pulpit Oratory, Jennifer Elise Merriman Dec 1999

George Campbell And The Ethics Of Pulpit Oratory, Jennifer Elise Merriman

Masters Theses

George Campbell, eighteenth-century Scottish minister and rhetorician, uses a consistent model of religious and secular epistemology, which relies on experience and rational conviction. He finds that this model creates problems when applied to preaching, a field where the goal is typically practical conviction, or "faith," rather than the probabilistic rational conviction. The problems arise from an inherent clash between the dedication of the rational-empiricist theologian or secular scientist to his experiential means of discovery, as contrasted with the rhetorician's emphasis on the persuasive ends of his art.

Campbell illustrates this problem by showing the "excesses" or inappropriate modes of persuasion …

The Future Of Banking: A Political Analysis For 1999 And Beyond, John Maffey Dec 1999

The Future Of Banking: A Political Analysis For 1999 And Beyond, John Maffey

Masters Theses

This study focuses on the cycle of politics and banking by analyzing the relationship amongst the three primary actors within the domestic financial subsystem; regulatory agencies, the banking industry, and members of Congress. The cycle consists of three stages; loosening or deregulatory behavior, tightening or reregulatory activity, and re-loosening, which is a return to deregulation. Legislation does not distinguish the stages, rather it ratifies existing behavior. Prior to legislative action, regulators grant bankers similar authority in an effort to enhance profitability or fend off competitors. Regulatory agencies provide mostly objective, non-partisan advice to Congress and supervision of the industry, acting …

Biological Control Agents Of The Gypsy Moth, Lymantria Dispar L., In Tennessee : Presence, Impact, And Role In Future Management Programs, Gary B. Moughler

Masters Theses

The gypsy moth, Lymantria dispar, is not native to the U.S., but was introduced into Massachusetts in 1869 by Etienne Leopold Trouvelot (Doane and McManus 1981). This insect subsequently escaped into the surrounding forests and is now found throughout the northeastern U.S. The gypsy moth feeds on more than 300 tree species and defoliates an average of 2 million forested hectares per year (Reardon and Hajek 1998). It is estimated that the gypsy moth front will be in Bristol, TN, by 2005 and Knoxville, TN, by 2015 if no efforts are made to slow the gypsy moth (Liebhold 1998). …

Stress At A Juvenile Detention Center: Identifying Stressors And Examining The Coping Process, Matthew J. Schmid Dec 1999

Stress At A Juvenile Detention Center: Identifying Stressors And Examining The Coping Process, Matthew J. Schmid

Masters Theses

In the examination of the literature dealing with stress as it relates to corrections, normally "juvenile corrections workers are not considered, due to the dearth of stress-related research" (Huckabbe, 1992, p. 479). This thesis is a qualitative project designed to analyze detention workers' views on stress. I was interested in finding out the following two things: (1) the workers' identification of the major stressors in their job, and (2) the ways the workers coped with the stressors identified.

Structured interviews were conducted with one third (12) of the detention staff that worked at a forty bed juvenile detention center in …

Discriminative Stimulus Effects Of (+)-7-Oh-Dpat In Rats: Importance Of D3 Receptors, April J. Christian Dec 1999

Discriminative Stimulus Effects Of (+)-7-Oh-Dpat In Rats: Importance Of D3 Receptors, April J. Christian

Masters Theses

Despite the reported relatively high binding affinity of 7-OH-DPAT to dopamine D3 receptors, results of recent investigations with the highly selective 03 receptor antagonist, PNU-99194A have questioned the importance of 03 receptors in the discriminative stimulus effects of 7-OH-DPAT. In the present study, sixteen male Sprague- Dawley rats (N=8/group) were trained to discriminate (+)- 7-OH-DPAT (0.03 mg/kg, sc) from saline in a two-lever operant procedure using a fixed-ratio 20 schedule of water reinforcement. After stable performance was established, substitution tests were conducted with the D3-prefering agonist, (+)-PD-128907 and the psychostimulant cocaine. Additionally, antagonism were conducted with the …

Molecular And Cellular Responses Of Normal Human Trophoblast To Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor And Placenta Growth Factor, Jayashree Desai

Masters Theses

Implantation and growth of the placenta requires extensive angiogenesis in fetal villi and maternal decidua to form vascular structures involved in placental exchange. Vascular development, cell proliferation, differentiation and invasiveness are required for proper development of the placenta. Many growth factors and receptors are involved in these processes. The human placenta is a rich source of angiogenic growth factors and their receptors, which are known to control vascular changes and control trophoblast function [1, 2]. Within the placenta, trophoblast are a source of angiogenic growth factors like transforming growth factor -α and β (TGF-α and β), epidermal growth factor (EGF), …

As Different As Night And Day: Palamon And Arcite Reconsidered, William Hamilton Dec 1999

As Different As Night And Day: Palamon And Arcite Reconsidered, William Hamilton

Masters Theses

Through an analysis of characterization and the sub-text of infernal allusions to the myths of Orpheus and the ravishment of Proserpina, my thesis demonstrates that the Theban cousins Palamon and Arcite are not only distinct but diametrically opposed characters who are more central to The Knight' s Tale than the present critical consensus allows. Chapter I analyzes Charles Muscarine, who so convincingly put an end to the once lively debate over the characterization of the cousins that the proposition that they are indistinguishable remains an a priori assumption in the criticism of the poem to this day. Chapter II analyzes …

Stratigraphic Analysis Of Diamicton Units In North-Central St. Joseph County, Michigan, Andrew C. Flint Dec 1999

Stratigraphic Analysis Of Diamicton Units In North-Central St. Joseph County, Michigan, Andrew C. Flint

Masters Theses

Seven subsurface glacial diamicton units, including a paleosol, have been characterized from two borings in north-central St. Joseph County, Michigan. These units have been characterized in terms of their clay mineralogy, texture, color, and stratigraphic position. t-Tests confirm that each unit displays a significant difference in mean 7A/10A peak height ratio from all other units.

Unit 4, informally called the Gray Marker tilt has been correlated between borings in this study and to the findings of others (Gardner, 1997, Nicks, in preparation). The Newbury till described by the Indiana Geological Survey (unpublished data) may also correlate to Unit 4, raising …

The Educational Nature Reserve Problem: Selecting A Prairie Reserve Location For The Kalamazoo Nature Center, Theresa M. Mau-Crimmins Dec 1999

The Educational Nature Reserve Problem: Selecting A Prairie Reserve Location For The Kalamazoo Nature Center, Theresa M. Mau-Crimmins

Masters Theses

This study investigates a complex location-planning problem that is often faced by managers of nature centers: how to select sites on which to position new habitat reserves. Mission statements of these establishments often indicate objectives of habitat preservation and public education. Inherent in land preservation is a limited amount of traffic through the area. In contrast, in order for visitors to fully experience an ecosystem, access to the site is required.

In order to address site selection problems at such institutions, the Educational Nature Reserve Model was developed. This model fits situations in which the conflicting goals of conservation and …

Dermatoglyphic Analysis Of Male Criminals, Jeremy Matyas Dec 1999

Dermatoglyphic Analysis Of Male Criminals, Jeremy Matyas

Masters Theses

The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between genetics and criminal behavior. Using specific dermatoglyphic features of 100 Caucasian male criminals, comparisons were made to a comparable control group of noncriminals. Dermatoglyphics are known to be, in part, genetically determined. Differences between the non-criminal and criminal samples would support the belief that certain criminal behaviors are genetically determined.

Statistical tests were performed on the dermatoglyphic pattern types and ridge counts of the criminal and non-criminal samples. There were three tests of the total ridge counts (TRC) that were found to be statistically significant. The principal difference was …

The Estimation Of Rape Prevalence: A Reflexive Account Of The Construction And Pretesting Of A New Questionnaire, Edith Marie Fisher Dec 1999

The Estimation Of Rape Prevalence: A Reflexive Account Of The Construction And Pretesting Of A New Questionnaire, Edith Marie Fisher

Masters Theses

A review of the rape literature and current assessment suggests that research done in this highly sensitive area is especially vulnerable to response effects. Comparisons between studies is problematic due to vast differences in the conceptualizations of rape, the wording and context of the questions used to solicit data as well as the method of data collection. I created a new rape prevalence questionnaire with the intent of decreasing response effects. I conducted 15 semi-structured pretest interviews with female Western Michigan University students and three pilot tests, in which 30 telephone interviews were completed, 30 personal interviews were completed, and …

The Biphobia Scale: Development And Validation, Patrick S. Mulick Dec 1999

The Biphobia Scale: Development And Validation, Patrick S. Mulick

Masters Theses

Sexual orientation is generally assessed as a dichotomous variable, rather than a continuous variable. According to this classification the concept of bisexuality does not exist and there is a dearth of research for the construct. Some theorists believe that this lack of knowledge has led to fear and discrimination of bisexual individuals (Ochs, 1996; Rust, 1993). Biphobia, defined as negative attitudes about bisexuality and bisexual individuals, is a psychological construct that is not well understood. There has been a recent resurgence of interest in bisexuality and biphobia but there are currently limited empirical investigations examining the constructs. And, no scale …

Mosquito Control And Pollutant Removal In Constructed Wetlands : A Mesocosm Study Using Dairy Wastewater, Catherine Renee Mayhew Dec 1999

Mosquito Control And Pollutant Removal In Constructed Wetlands : A Mesocosm Study Using Dairy Wastewater, Catherine Renee Mayhew

Masters Theses

Both subsurface flow (SSF) and free water surface (FWS) constructed wetland (CW) systems have been used for partial treatment of wastewater from animal production facilities. SSF systems are considerably more expensive, especially with regard to capital costs. However, the less expensive FWS systems have tremendous mosquito production potential; a factor which cannot be ignored by design engineers, especially given increasing public concern about emerging and reemerging vector borne diseases.

One promising method of reducing mosquito production in FWS CW systems is periodic drying. By disrupting the development of larval mosquitoes, this strategy may prevent the emergence of adult mosquito species …

Quantification Of Volatile Compounds Produced During Simulated Biofumigation Utilizing Indian Mustard Degrading In Soil Under Different Environmental Conditions, Andrew Jennings Price Dec 1999

Quantification Of Volatile Compounds Produced During Simulated Biofumigation Utilizing Indian Mustard Degrading In Soil Under Different Environmental Conditions, Andrew Jennings Price

Masters Theses

One of the main pesticides used for soil fumigation is methyl bromide, a broad spectrum soil fumigant. Methyl bromide was listed in the 1993 Montreal Protocol as an ozone-depleting compound. Because of this listing, the production of methyl bromide will be frozen at 1991 levels until importation and production are completely halted in the year 2005 (U.S. Clean Air Act). Biofumigation and solarization are strategies that could be inexpensive solutions to control soil pathogens, nematodes and weeds. The objective of this research was to quantify the amount and composition of all volatile compounds, including isothiocyanates (ITC), produced from degradation of …
