Geology Of A Section Of The Northwest Tobacco Root Mountains, Madison County, Southwest Montana, Kiff James Samuelson Dec 1984

Geology Of A Section Of The Northwest Tobacco Root Mountains, Madison County, Southwest Montana, Kiff James Samuelson

Masters Theses

The northwest Tobacco Root Mountains are located on the boundary between two major tectonic provinces: the fold and thrust belt and the Rocky Mountain foreland. Deformation typical of the Rocky Mountain foreland is present in the form of two major northwest trending faults with associated folds. Paleozoic rocks were passively draped over at least one of the elevated Precambrian blocks. Foliation of the Precambrian rocks also appears to have been gently folded in the process.

Folds and thrusts occur within the Precambrian and Paleozoic rocks, on the westernmost flank of the range, appearing to follow the general trend of the …

The Evangelical High Church: A Moderate Answer To The Oxford Movement, David Wayne Carmicheal

Masters Theses

The purpose of this study was to investigate the various reactions to the Oxford Movement among the Evangelicals of England; and to determine whether those Evangelicals who did not react by becoming Low Churchmen attempted to define a new and unique position for the Anglican Church. A certain group of Evangelicals, some of whom referred to themselves as Evangelical High Churchmen, did not simply reject the High and Low Church extremes, but attempted to define a moderate position which embraced aspects of both Low Church Evangelicalism and Tractarianism. This group helped prepare the way for the Anglican Church to emerge, …

Platelet Aggregation Studies In Canine Cyclic Hematopoiesis, Charlotte M. Boney Dec 1984

Platelet Aggregation Studies In Canine Cyclic Hematopoiesis, Charlotte M. Boney

Masters Theses

Investigation of platelet function in dogs with cyclic hematopoiesis (OH) revealed a platelet aggregation disorder. Collagen-induced aggregation of CH dog platelets was significantly below normal, although normal aggregation in response to ADP was observed. The failure to aggregate in response to collagen was not influenced by platelet size. Aggregation was particularly low on days 2, 3, 4 and 14 of the 14-day neutrophil cycle which is typical of CH dogs. The lack of response to collagen suggests a defect in the arachidonic acid pathway of platelet metabolism since platelet-generated thromboxane B2 was significantly (~70%) below control levels. Platelets from dogs …

The Application Of Multiderivative Infrared Spectroscopy To Iodine Number Determination, Jeffrey C. Lowry Dec 1984

The Application Of Multiderivative Infrared Spectroscopy To Iodine Number Determination, Jeffrey C. Lowry

Masters Theses

The Food and Drug Administration requires the disclosure of total unsaturation of commercial products as an indication of nutritional value. This unsaturation is a guide to the expected stability of food additives, such as edible oils and foods in which they are used. Unsaturation is typically evaluated as an iodine number, calculated for these additives based on their consumption of iodine through addition across the carbon-carbon double bonds. This titration method can typically take 45 minutes.

The investigation presented develops an alternative method for determining iodine numbers of some common oils using a computerized infrared spectophotometer. The analysis time, as …

Kinetics Of The Formation Of The Nickel(Ii) Complex With N, N' -Dimethylethylenediaminediacetic Acid And The Metal Exchange Reaction Between N,N'-Dimethylethylenediaminediacetatonickel(Ii) And Copper(Ii), Roger A. Karel

Masters Theses

The kinetics of the reaction of aquonickel (II) ion with N'N'-dimethlethylenediaminediacetic acid has been studied at 25°C and 0.1M iconic strength over a pH range of 6.0 to 9.3 using stopped-flow techniques. Formation reactions in all cases were first-order in Ni (II) and in ligand. The formation rate constant for the protonated and unprotonated species were evaluated and compared to their theoretical value. The rate-determining step is shown to be ring closure. A comparison of this system with other studies involving complexation of nickel (II) confirm the magnitude of the internal conjugate base effect and also shows a correlation between …

Regurgitation By The Face Fly, Musca Autumnalis Degeer, Russell E. Coleman Dec 1984

Regurgitation By The Face Fly, Musca Autumnalis Degeer, Russell E. Coleman

Masters Theses

Face flies normally began regurgitating within 10 minutes after feeding, and continued for periods of up to 240 minutes. Almost 100 percent of flies fed a concentrated (4.8%) solution of trypticase-soy broth were observed regurgitating. The deposition of droplets onto a substrate was almost never observed, indicating that the regurgitation is not analogous to vomiting. The droplet exuded contained from five to ten percent of the food consumed, with the crop the source of the fluid. The crop is also the most likely destination of the regurgitated materiel. The purpose of this phenomenon is still not clear. However, the fluid …

A Skeletal Comparison Of Bluewing Teals Versus Greenwing Teals And Mallard Ducks Versus Black Ducks From A Zooarchaeological Perspective, Michael Gordon Cohen Dec 1984

A Skeletal Comparison Of Bluewing Teals Versus Greenwing Teals And Mallard Ducks Versus Black Ducks From A Zooarchaeological Perspective, Michael Gordon Cohen

Masters Theses

The archaeological literature of the Great Lakes region frequently reports the occurrence of faunal and floral remains from the sites under investigation. An analysis of the data indicates that mammal bones greatly outnumber bird bone remains. The hypothesis is suggested that the limited number of identified bird bone remains might be due to the fact that zooarchaeologists are not as familiar with avian bones as they are with mammal bones. For the benefit of zooarchaeologists, bird bone anatomy is reviewed which hopefully will lead to better identification of these remains in the future. The differences between two species of teals …
