Separation Of The N-Sphere By An (N - 1)-Sphere, James C. Cantrell

Masters Theses

In this thesis we consider certain (n-1)-spheres embedded in S^n (we will frequently use the fact that S^n is topologically equivalent to the one point compactification of E^n). The problem is then to establish the existence or non-existence of certain topological properties of the two domains into which S^n is separated by the given (n-1)-spheres.

Interrelationships Between Sulfate Metabolism And Tocopherols In The Weanling Rat, Young Ping Chin Dec 1961

Interrelationships Between Sulfate Metabolism And Tocopherols In The Weanling Rat, Young Ping Chin

Masters Theses

There have been numerous investigations in which reported observations point toward the existence of metabolic interrelationships between tocopherols, the sulfur-containing amino acids, and inorganic sulfur. In previous work, this laboratory has used mixtures partially composed of oxidized casein and casein to produce a protein source having a low methionine content and lending variation with respect to inorganic sulfate. Alpha protein, a purified soybean protein, is characteristically similar to oxidized casein in that both substances have a low sulfur amino acid content. Due to the expenses involved in the laboratory use of oxidized casein, the present investigation was undertaken to determine …

Some Observations Of Preliminary Incubation On Pasteurized Milk, Edward Ray Kelly Dec 1961

Some Observations Of Preliminary Incubation On Pasteurized Milk, Edward Ray Kelly

Masters Theses

The dairy industry strives to provide the public with safe and wholesome milk and milk products having good keeping quality. This goal can be accomplished through quality control programs and accepted methods and practices in the production and handling of the milk and its products. Today’s longer shelf life requirement, however, makes it necessary for maximum attainment of sanitation through proper processing and handling practices in order to maintain good keeping quality.

The destruction of pathogenic or disease producing microorganisms which may be present in milk and cream is carried out most readily by proper pasteurization. This practice renders milk …

The Effect Of Length Of Dry Period Upon Milk Secretion, Warren Hall Maclin Dec 1961

The Effect Of Length Of Dry Period Upon Milk Secretion, Warren Hall Maclin

Masters Theses

The fact that dairy cows should have a dry period before calving has been recognized for quite some time. The dry period or rest period as it is sometimes called makes it possible for the cow to rebuild in her buddy the store of nutrients which she has drawn upon during the previous lactation. It is also known that as a cow progresses toward the end of her lactation the secreting cells of the mammary gland begin to involute or their functioning activity is greatly reduced. It is supposed that a dry period is necessary for recuperation and development of …

Buttressing Effect In 3, 3' -Disubstituted-2, 2' -Three-Carbon-Atom Bridged Biphenyls, Yunn Hui Chiang Sep 1961

Buttressing Effect In 3, 3' -Disubstituted-2, 2' -Three-Carbon-Atom Bridged Biphenyls, Yunn Hui Chiang

Masters Theses

Introduction

The configuration of biphenyl has been the subject of much investigation and many recent reviews (1, 5, 6, 7, 8, 17, 21, 22). Of particular interest has been the configuration of 2,2' -bridged biphenyl derivatives. The preparation of an optically active 2,2' -three-carbon-atom-bridged biphenyl having an ultraviolet absorption maximum at 250 mμ, has been recently described (14). Although the compound was easily racemized, this property requires that a non-planar configuration be assigned to this biphenyl (I). Furthermore, this ultraviolet spectra indicates that inter-ring conjugation must exist in the non-planar configuration.

An Analysis Of Some Effects Of Multiple-Grade Grouping An Elementary School, E. Stanley Chace Aug 1961

An Analysis Of Some Effects Of Multiple-Grade Grouping An Elementary School, E. Stanley Chace

Masters Theses

The foregoing conclusions would imply that the arguments presented in Chapter II for multiple-grade grouping need to be modified . Though there appear to be some advantages to multiple-grade grouping, these advantages are not sharply defined. While it is possible to argue that these advantages would have been more apparent had different techniques and practices been employed in the multiple-grade classes, this remains to be demonstrated .

Factors Affecting The Performance Of Broilers, G. R. Nair Aug 1961

Factors Affecting The Performance Of Broilers, G. R. Nair

Masters Theses

The efficiency of broiler production has increased greatly in recent years and can be attributed to advancements in the areas of breeding, management, nutrition, and disease control. No single factor in any one of these areas can be said to account for the major share of this increased efficiency but rather it is the combination of a large number of factors such as breeding techniques, and breed improvement, of improved management practices, and of advances in nutrition and disease control.

The optimum combination of conditions or factors for broiler production is seldom, if ever, realized. Information which might have been …

The Interrelationship Of Tocopherols And Sulfur Metabolism, Betty June Pendergrass Aug 1961

The Interrelationship Of Tocopherols And Sulfur Metabolism, Betty June Pendergrass

Masters Theses

The metabolic effects of the tocopherols and or sulfur have been inadvertently linked through research findings. Although not initially postulated, a relationship between vitamin B and sulfur has turned up in such phenomena as prevention of dietary hepatic necrosis, muscular dystrophy, erythrocyte hemolysis; and structural alteration of mucopolysaccharides, proteins, and lipoproteins. The relationship between vitamin E and sulfur remains ill-defined at present; the available information has been obtained as a by-product of research efforts oriented toward other goals. However, an increasing body of evidence indicates that significant behavioral interactions may occur. The present investigation was designed to evaluate possible interrelationships …

The Effect Of Calcium, Potassium, And Boron Fertilization Upon The Chemical Composition And Yield Of Alfalfa, William Eugene Bryan Aug 1961

The Effect Of Calcium, Potassium, And Boron Fertilization Upon The Chemical Composition And Yield Of Alfalfa, William Eugene Bryan

Masters Theses

The alfalfa plant is believed to have had its origin in a relatively dry area, possibly Persia (41). This plant grows luxuriantly under its adapted environment, but will not grow well at low fertility levels. In 1952, alfalfa production in Tennessee was only a little more than half that of 1949. Until this time, even though much research had been done with lime and phosphate in alfalfa production, very little attention had been given potassium and boron and the importance of a proper proportion of these elements to meet the crop's needs. Added information from research and farmer experience concerning …

Effect Of Certain Crop And Soil Management Factors On The Size Of Kernels And Yield Of Corn, Gurushiddappa V. Havanagi

Masters Theses

Yields of corn can be increased by adopting certain levels of crop and soil management factors, such as plant population, variety, nitrogen, phosphate and potash fertilizers, lime and date of planting, as well as growing corn on suitable soils. During the past few years considerable interest has been manifested in efficient management of these factors for optimum yields. One of the objectives of this study was to estimate the extent to which certain of these management factors affect the optimum yield of corn. Management practices also affect size of corn kernels. Due to the greater demand for particular sizes of …

Liming Of Alfalfa In A Greenhouse Study, N. S. Loganathan Aug 1961

Liming Of Alfalfa In A Greenhouse Study, N. S. Loganathan

Masters Theses

The use of agricultural lime has been recognized down through the ages as a practice that is basic to good soil management in humid regions. The effects of liming are a complex of many contributing physical, chemical. microbiological and physiological factors. Its direct function is to correct soil acidity, improve soil structure and create an environment suitable to the growth and development of plants. Liming enhances the availability and plant uptake of elements such as nitrogen, phosphorus, molybdenum, calcium, and magnesium. At the same time it drastically reduces the concentration of iron, aluminum and manganese, which under very acid conditions …

Influence Of Liming On The Yield And Uptake Of Calcium, Magnesium, Potassium, And Phosphorus By Soybeans Grown On Two Different Soils, Mahadevappa Basappa Yeligar

Masters Theses

Recent developments in the field of agricultural science, has helped in understanding many of the soil fertility problems. Soil fertility problems are not concerned with one or two interacting factors but concerned with many. The living plant is a complex system that responds continually to the environmental conditions. The soil in which the plant grows is a heterogeneous medium and plants respond by effecting a sort of physiological integration of the various factors concerned with growth. The specific study on the nutritional requirement for a particular crop depends mainly on the species, to which the crop belongs and the nutritional …

Potential Use, Management And Productivity Of Loudon County Soils, Appaswamy Devasigamoney Aug 1961

Potential Use, Management And Productivity Of Loudon County Soils, Appaswamy Devasigamoney

Masters Theses

There is consensus of opinion among soil scientists that soil survey interpretations are inadequate for efficient farm planning. Seldom are farmers provided with predictions regarding the behavior of their soils under defined systems of use and management. Since interpretations are an important part of soil survey, they should be comprehensive enough to contemplate several alternative uses and combinations of management practices for a given soil. They should be specific, yet flexible enough to permit substitution among cropping systems, management level and practices. With such guides farmers would be able to work out cropping programs and management systems suited to their …
