A Laboratory Study Of The Beech Granite Plagioclase, Joseph Taylor Carlisle Dec 1956

A Laboratory Study Of The Beech Granite Plagioclase, Joseph Taylor Carlisle

Masters Theses

Introduction: In northeast Tennessee a complex basement of Pre-Cambrian crystalline rocks either unconformably underlies the oldest Cambrian sediments, or bears a faulted relationship to them. The complexity of these rocks is, indeed, so great that much doubt exists as to the origin and even the nature of their component rock units. Keith (1907, p. 3) subdivided these rocks into two large units: (1) the Cranberry "granite," in this region a highly contorted gneiss of complex lithology, and (2) the Beech granite, a rather porphyritic, generally coarse-grained granite which he considered to have been considerably squeezed and mashed. Of these Keith …

Supplementation Of Degossypolized Cottonseed Meal In Rations For Growing And Fattening Swine, Richard Travis Piercy

Masters Theses

Introduction: Cotton is one of the major sources of income in southern agriculture. Cotton is the highest income crop in Tennessee and is a leading crop in several other southern states. Because of large scale production of cotton in the South, cottonseed meal, a by-product of the industry, has usually been the cheapest and most plentiful of the protein supplements available for livestock feeding in this area.

In the past the use of cottonseed meal in livestock rations has been limited mainly to the feeding of ruminants. Swine and poultry show the effects of gossypol toxicity when fed large quantities …

Masters Theses

This study traces the growth and development of the University of Tennessee during the administration of President Brown Ayres (1904 to 1919). The thesis, therefore, comprises only one portion of the University story. The most recent as well as the most complete undertaking on the development of the University is Dr. S. J. Folmsbee's history, still mostly in manuscript, of the University from its origin to the beginning of the administration of Dr. Charles Dabney in 1887. It serves as an informative source on the early struggles of this growing institution.

A Study Of Direct Combine Harvesting Of Selected Grass And Legume Seeds, Erwin Keith Boyce Aug 1956

A Study Of Direct Combine Harvesting Of Selected Grass And Legume Seeds, Erwin Keith Boyce

Masters Theses

The first and foremost incentive for this study lies in the value of the seed which is lost each year. The average yield of crimson clover is 110 pounds per acre, of a potential yield of 500 pounds per acre. This results in a loss of approximately three million dollars which might have been realized by Tennessee farmers with better harvesting practices. A major portion of the 1.5 million dollars of orchardgrass seed imported from Denmark in 1953 was planted in Tennessee. The entire Southeast produces over one-half of the United States’ supply of lespedeza, crimson clover, and tall fescue …

Faster Effects On Dressing Yield, Shrinkage, And Ph Contractile Tissue In Swine, Robert Lewis Saffle Aug 1956

Faster Effects On Dressing Yield, Shrinkage, And Ph Contractile Tissue In Swine, Robert Lewis Saffle

Masters Theses

It is a well established fact that hogs will usually lose weight while in transit from the farm to market or slaughterhouse. This losing weight is commonly called shrinkage or drift and is of vital importance to all persons concerned with the swine industry.

Shrinkage may be either excretory or tissue. Excretory shrinkage is defined as the loss in weight resulting from the elimination of excreta, which is usually referred to as the elimination of fill. Loss in weight due to excretion does not affect the carcass weight, therefore, the dressing percent is not changed when based on farm weight. …
