Joachim Of Flora And The Eternal Gospel, Theodore Moeller Jun 1956

Joachim Of Flora And The Eternal Gospel, Theodore Moeller

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

Joachim of Flora is one of the most facinating characters to arise out of the Middle Ages. In the centuries following his death he has become almost legendary, for as one author puts it, "The story of Joachim takes us into the atmosphere of charming legend." His own contacts with our present age are numerous, and yet he has remained relatively unknown. Dante admired him, honoring him with lines in the Divine Comedy, George Sand based one of her romances, Spiridon his life, and the philosophers such as Schelling and Hegel pay tribute to his work. Certainly such a figure …

Paul's Baptismal Theology With Special Reference To Rom. 6, Walter Keller Jun 1956

Paul's Baptismal Theology With Special Reference To Rom. 6, Walter Keller

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

The original intention was to undertake an exegetical investigation of this passage. However, it soon became obvious that, to understand the thought of the Apostle, it is impossible to confine one’s study to a simple passage. And so, though the original intention continued to remain the foremost concern, the problem assumed a broader scope, as the title of thesis indicates. Very naturally therefore, references to baptismal sayings outside the Pauline corpus lie outside the scope of this thesis, inasmuch as the purpose of the investigation is to ascertain the mind of Paul with regard to this sacrament.

The Theology Of The Wisdom Of Solomon, Walter Rast Jun 1956

The Theology Of The Wisdom Of Solomon, Walter Rast

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

We are justified in supposing that for a Jew, living in Egypt and yet preserving the foundation of his religious heritage, this problem was poignant indeed. And, at the risk of oversimplification, our writer's personal confrontation with Hellenism would seem to be his chief problem, and the problem at the bottom of our own quest into The Wisdom of Solomon. As an outgrowth of this problem, it would seem that the question underlying our concern with The·Book of Wisdom would be: How does this writing compare theologically with those which hold a safe place in the canon?

The Shepherd-Flock Image In The Old Testament, Carl Graesser Jun 1956

The Shepherd-Flock Image In The Old Testament, Carl Graesser

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

This study therefore follows a more systematic method. We shall look at each side of the image, utilizing the pertinent material in the entire Old Testament before moving on to another side of the image. After a brief survey of the extra-biblical usage, the-following chapters will deal with Yahweh as a shepherd, Israel as his flock, other leaders who are named shepherd, and finally, the Messianic shepherd.

It will be noted that this study deals largely with the primary Biblical sources rather than with secondary sources. We were able to locate but three discussions of the subject at hand of …

The Way Of Salvation Under The Old Covenant As It Is Revealed In The Psalter, Richard Hoyer Jun 1956

The Way Of Salvation Under The Old Covenant As It Is Revealed In The Psalter, Richard Hoyer

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

It is not enough--if not untrue--simply to say that the faithful of the Old Testament were saved by faith in the Christ to come as we are saved by faith in Jesus of Nazareth, the Christ who has come, without answering the- problems that their incomplete revelation raises. What exactly did they mean by “salvat1on?” If they knew of no heaven, was their concept of salvation limited to a deliverance from the evils of life or did it go beyond? What was the answer to sin? In what manner did they, or could they receive the mercy and forgiveness of …

An Exegetical Study Of St Paul's Concept Of Santification As Found In ἉδεάΖω And Ἁδεασμόs, Harvey Lange Jun 1956

An Exegetical Study Of St Paul's Concept Of Santification As Found In ἉδεάΖω And Ἁδεασμόs, Harvey Lange

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

It might be well to emphasize the fact that this is an exegetical study of sanctification; therefore sanctification as defined in this paper may or may not always agree with the other uses of sanctification in different theological disciplines.

An Investigation Of The Factors Of Persuasion In The Sermons Of Dr Walter A Maier, Lester Zeitler Jun 1956

An Investigation Of The Factors Of Persuasion In The Sermons Of Dr Walter A Maier, Lester Zeitler

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

The scope of this investigation, however, is confined only to the preaching on the program; more exactly, the preaching of Dr. Walter A. Maier. The specific purpose is to search out those factors of persuasion in the radio sermons of Dr. Maier which may so largely help to account for his success in preaching the Gospel. The object is to figure out the secret of his effectiveness as Andrew Blackwood suggests: "Study the methods of the radio preacher whom your thoughtful laymen enjoy, and figure out the secrets of his effectiveness. You will find that he depends mainly on being …

With Christ The Union Of The Christian With Christ As Expressed By St Paul, Harold Scheibert Jun 1956

With Christ The Union Of The Christian With Christ As Expressed By St Paul, Harold Scheibert

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

The Suffering servant is a strange and fluid Old Testament figure. Sometimes it is clear that the Messiah is meant, but at other times the Servant apparently is Israel herself or the faithful Remnant. Thus there is a close connection and sometimes almost an identification between the Suffering Servant and Israel. There are many other starting points that we could find to examine the doctrine of the union with Christ, but in this thesis we are limiting ourselves to St. Paul’s statements using the preposition σν́ν.

The Philosophical And Religious Background Of Athens As Reflected In The Areopagus Speech Of Paul, Carl Querbach Jun 1956

The Philosophical And Religious Background Of Athens As Reflected In The Areopagus Speech Of Paul, Carl Querbach

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

The fundamental purpose of this thesis is twofold. In The first place, it intends to gauge as accurately as possible the extent and precise context of Paul’s employment of the philosophical and religious thought of Athens in his Areopagus address. Secondly, it intends to determine precisely what his goal was and how his method of approach was determined both by that aim and by the nature of his audience’s thought. In other words, this study will attempt to Show both which facets of Stoic, Epicurean and religious thought are reflected in the speech, and how Paul makes use of those …
