President Gerald Ford's Impact On United States Foreign Policy From 1974 To 1991, Robert David Clifton

Master's Theses

To illustrate President Ford's impact on United States' foreign policy, this thesis looks at his early life, his Congressional career and his brief tenure as Vice President. From there, it focuses on the differences between Ford and President Nixon. The paper looks at their personalities, decision-making styles, and their styles of leadership. Next, it analyzes the major international events that took place during Ford's years in the White House. A Profile Of Antibiotic Resistant Bacteria In The James River, Keith Allen Boisvert Aug 1997

A Profile Of Antibiotic Resistant Bacteria In The James River, Keith Allen Boisvert

Master's Theses

Spatial and temporal variability in the antibiotic resistance of bacterial assemblages in the lower portion of the James River was examined. The antibiotic resistance of culturable coliforms was compared to the resistance in the microbial community. Antibiotic resistance was determined via colony formation on media containing antibiotics. The antibiotics ampicillin, chloramphenicol, streptomycin and tetracycline were used at concentrations ranging from 10 to 500 ug/ml. Statistically significant differences in the mean number of antibiotic resistant isolates were observed among both sample sites and dates. The sampling site at river mile 99 just below Richmond showed both increased antibiotic resistance and bacterial …

Morphology Of Neurons In The Medial Preoptic Area (Mpoa) Of The Rat : Sexual Dimorphisms And Prenatal Stress Effects, Kimberly M. Gerecke Aug 1997

Morphology Of Neurons In The Medial Preoptic Area (Mpoa) Of The Rat : Sexual Dimorphisms And Prenatal Stress Effects, Kimberly M. Gerecke

Master's Theses

Androgens masculinize brain development and behavior, and alterations in early hormone exposure modify development. We examined sexual dimorphisms and prenatal stress (PS) effects on the morphology of mPOA neurons. Timed-mated rats were subjected to thrice-daily heat, light and restraint stress from days 15-22 of gestation. In adulthood, the offspring were killed, the brains stained with Golgi-Cox, and the neurons traced for analysis. Sexual dimorphisms in the cumulative length and branching of the dendrites were observed: (Control Females>Control Males). Stress effects were seen in the males in somal area, perimeter, and dendritic length: (PS males>Control males). Stress effects in …

"An Ill-Timed Conservatism": Tactical Instruction At The Royal Military College, Sandhurst, 1874-1914, Joseph David Prestia

Master's Theses

From a military and strategic standpoint, the First World War was, for the British and most other belligerents, a disaster: economies were pressured to their limits and few events exemplified tactical, operational, and ·strategic futility more than the Western Front. Since 1918, politicians, journalists, and historians alike have endeavored to assess the reasons for the catastrophe that was the Great War and to place blame on anyone's shoulders but their own. Although the British government made an inquiry into the adequacy of training at the Royal Military College, Sandhurst, shortly after the war, historians have largely forgotten military education as …

Group Therapy For Sexually Abused Adolescents : Assessment Of Coping Skills, Negative Beliefs, And Self-Esteem, Kimberly R. Akin

Master's Theses

The sexual victimization of children in an increasing crime problem in this country and is now also recognized as a serious mental health issue. It has been estimated that the risk of victimization could be as high as one in ten for boys (Finkelhor, 1979) and one in three for girls (Anderson, Martin, Mullen, Romans, & Herbison, 1993). Girls are eight times as likely as boys to suffer rape (Finkelhor & Dziuba-Leatherman, 1994). Prevalence rates estimate between 15% and 38% of women (Finkelhor, 1984; Herman, 1981) and 6% of men (Finkelhor, 1984) have experienced childhood sexual abuse (CSA).

An Arm And A Leg For The Confederacy : Virginia's Disabled Veteran Legislation, 1865 To 1888, W. Jackson Dickens Jr. Aug 1997

An Arm And A Leg For The Confederacy : Virginia's Disabled Veteran Legislation, 1865 To 1888, W. Jackson Dickens Jr.

Master's Theses

The Civil War, more than any other conflict in American history, left a legacy of maimed and disabled veterans. In Virginia a social consciousness began to develop during the war which led to both private and public attempts to aid these men. Following the war this philanthropy was continued by the General Assembly with a series of acts intended to provide for the disabled veterans of the Commonwealth. Initially a small scale program to provide artificial limbs to amputees, this initiative quickly expanded to include disabled veterans of all types. It was from this aid program that a general state …

A Study Of The Perceptions Of Leaders In The California Animal Welfare And Control Fields Regarding The "No-Kill" Philosophy, Marcia Mayeda Jul 1997

A Study Of The Perceptions Of Leaders In The California Animal Welfare And Control Fields Regarding The "No-Kill" Philosophy, Marcia Mayeda

Master's Theses

This study explores whether the beliefs, attitudes, and policy practices of California animal welfare and control leaders are accurately reflected and in accord with position statements encountered in the animal welfare literature regarding the no-kill philosophy. Key issues examined include responsibility for animal control, mission fulfillment, quality of life for sheltered animals, public expectations of animal welfare and control agencies, financial impacts of various policy options, terminology in current usage, and future trends. Study findings demonstrate that the literature is not an accurate reflection of leaders' perceptions. Rather, the findings suggest that there is in actuality far less disagreement between …

The Civil War And Social Change : White Women In Fredericksburg, Virginia, Edward John Harcourt May 1997

The Civil War And Social Change : White Women In Fredericksburg, Virginia, Edward John Harcourt

Master's Theses

This thesis concerns the white women of Fredericksburg, Virginia, during and immediately after the Civil War. Between 1861-1865, Fredericksburg existed in the no-man's land between Washington, D.C. and Richmond, Virginia. The town was bombarded, occupied by enemy forces, and ransacked. Military control of the town changed hands 10 times. Four major battles were fought around Fredericksburg, resulting in over 100,000 casualties. Throughout the conflict, Fredericksburg's white women were in the thick of the action - supporting their troops, nursing the wounded, and managing the increasingly desperate struggle to provide food and shelter for their families. By 1865, many lives were …

Implementing Public Policy : The Virginia Comprehensive Community Corrections Act For Local-Responsible Offenders, Tracey L. Jenkins May 1997

Implementing Public Policy : The Virginia Comprehensive Community Corrections Act For Local-Responsible Offenders, Tracey L. Jenkins

Master's Theses

This is a study of how the Department of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS) attempted to implement a major crime initiative, the Comprehensive Community Corrections Act (CCCA). The aim is to explain the implementation process in DCJS with reference to organizational models developed by Richard Elmore (1978). A careful analysis of the day-to-day operation and decision-making processes of DCJS, with particular emphasis on the implementation of the CCCA, shows that DCJS normally corresponds with the expectations of the "organizational development" and "bureaucratic process" models described in Elmore's typology of organizations. Still, agencies often must adapt to political and policy changes that …

Gentlemen Of The Family : General George Washington's Aides-De-Camp And Military Secretaries, Gerald Edward Kahler May 1997

Gentlemen Of The Family : General George Washington's Aides-De-Camp And Military Secretaries, Gerald Edward Kahler

Master's Theses

Thirty-two men were members of General George Washington's military "family" during the Revolutionary War, serving as his aides-de-camp and military secretaries. Washington personally selected these men, applying high selection criteria regarding their education, intellectual ability, and writing skills. Representing the American gentry, the gentlemen of the family had influential political, military, or family connections. Washington's family usually consisted of six to eight aides and secretaries who typically served about sixteen months. Those who survived the Revolution became prominent leaders of the new nation, serving as Cabinet officers, executive branch officials, senators, congressmen, governors, and mayors. The thesis provides a narrative …

Semipermeable Membrane Devices Are Effective Surrogates Of Fish In Concentrating Polychlorinated Biphenyls, Christopher Gardner Collins May 1997

Semipermeable Membrane Devices Are Effective Surrogates Of Fish In Concentrating Polychlorinated Biphenyls, Christopher Gardner Collins

Master's Theses

This study examined the effectiveness of Semipermeable Membrane Devices (SPMDs) as surrogates for fish in concentrating polychlorinated biphenyls. Golden shiners (Notemigonus crysolucas) and SPMDs were exposed to three different concentrations (0.5, 1.5, and 3.0ppm) of Aroclor 1254 for 1, 3, and 5 days under laboratory conditions. Concentrations of Aroclor 1254 were measured in the SPMDs and fish tissue using extraction techniques and gas chromatography. The concentrations of PCB in SPMDs and N. crysolucas were positively correlated. This relationship compared favorably with data from other studies. The relationship between the concentration of PCB in SPMDs and tissue offish and …

Serbo-American Relations, 1903-1913, Jason C. Vuic May 1997

Serbo-American Relations, 1903-1913, Jason C. Vuic

Master's Theses

Of the available studies concerning pre-World War I Serbia, few have shown more than a passing interest in that country's relations with the United States. Indeed, no books have appeared on the subject, while only four articles examine Serbo-American affairs during the kingdom's most dynamic decade, from 1903 to 1913. Though each is in some way valuable, these works fail to give an adequate account of the relations existing between Serbia and the United States. Therefore the following chapters explore Serbo-American affairs from the death of King Alexander I Obrenovic in June 1903, to the conclusion of the Second Balkan …

A Study Of The Relationship Between Motivational Factors And Incentives Among Division Board Members Of The American Heart Association, California Affiliate, Region Iii, Catherine Jensen

Master's Theses

This study measured the motivational factors influencing the decisions of volunteers to serve the American Heart Association as division board members, and also measured actual outcomes these board members report experiencing as a result of such service. Comparisons were made to determine the degree to which there is a match between motives and incentives according to four distinct categories. The four categories were normative, rational, affiliative, and status. In addition, individual statements expressing board members' attitudes about their service were gathered. The results of the study were intended to provide information useful in board member recruitment and retention plans. The …
