An Introduction To The Victorian Woman : A Comparative Study Dealing With Poetical And Historical Sources, Lois Iffert Rudge Aug 1960

An Introduction To The Victorian Woman : A Comparative Study Dealing With Poetical And Historical Sources, Lois Iffert Rudge

Master's Theses

The purpose of studying the Victorian women in poetry has been to find some relation between the historical woman and the literary woman. Louise E. Rorabacher in a similar thesis considered only the novels of the day (Victorian Women in Life and Fiction, University of Illinois, 1942). Her purpose was to determine the validity of the concept of the woman in the novel in terms of historical fact. She concluded that the fictional woman was real, in a narrow, myopic sense, but that she did not reflect the social change. The picture of her social and conservative home life was …

The Effects Of Water Deprivation On The Body Weight, Food Intake And Water Intake Of The Albino Rat, Kenneth A. Blick Jul 1960

The Effects Of Water Deprivation On The Body Weight, Food Intake And Water Intake Of The Albino Rat, Kenneth A. Blick

Master's Theses

A survey of the literature reveals a substantial body of research concerned with the effects of food and/or water deprivation on body weight, food and water intake, and activity of the albino rat. This research is important because many psychological experiments, particularly those studies in the field of animal learning in which motivation is induced by the use of a nutritional maintenance schedule, require some measurement of performance on consecutive days during which the rats are in a motivational state.

The Contemporary American Short Story (A Study Of The Best American Short Stories, 1950-1959), Gertrude Carrick Curtler Jul 1960

The Contemporary American Short Story (A Study Of The Best American Short Stories, 1950-1959), Gertrude Carrick Curtler

Master's Theses

The purpose of this paper is to analyze and review the contemporary short story by means of an intensive study of The Best American Short Stories of the past ten years. The obvious weakness of the project is that all these two hundred and forty-five short stories were selected as the best of each year by one person, Martha Foley. While she is generally respected as a critic, still her opinions are based on her own taste and judgement alone. It is possible that she leans too much toward avant-garde stories, or even that she may prefer stories of one …

A Study Of The Validity Of Secondary School School Recommendations For Students Entering Richmond College In September, 1955, James Garland Hanes Jul 1960

A Study Of The Validity Of Secondary School School Recommendations For Students Entering Richmond College In September, 1955, James Garland Hanes

Master's Theses

A college admissions committee must examine and weigh carefully the qualifications of those applying for enrollment in the college. In general, such a committee must accept or reject the applicant on the basis of data of widely varying degrees of reliability -- i.e., the secondary school recommendation, secondary school grades, rank in graduating class, standardized test scores, and the recommendations of alumni, ministers, teachers, and friends of the family.

A History Of Averett College, David Wesley Gray Jul 1960

A History Of Averett College, David Wesley Gray

Master's Theses

The first school in Danville was established by a Presbyterian minister, the Reverend Mr. J. Matthews, in the year 1802. This school lasted only twelve months and was followed by a procession of others which soon perished for one reason or another. In 1823 the Danville Male Academy was organized and became the forerunner of the modern public education system of Danville. Soon after, a number or schools were established for "females." This study is concerned with only one, the school that is now Averett College.

A Study Of The Curcumin Method For Boron Determination, James Edward Hardcastle Jul 1960

A Study Of The Curcumin Method For Boron Determination, James Edward Hardcastle

Master's Theses

The purpose of the research project, of which this thesis is a partial report, was two fold: first, to develop a method for determining small quantities of boron, and second, to develop a rapid field test for the determination of atmospheric boron. A literature survey revealed that the curcumin method is the most sensitive colorimetric method presently available for boron determination. Also, the curcumin paper test should be readily adapted to the determination of atmospheric boron.

A Historical Study Of The Missionary Work Of Dr. George W. Butler And An Analysis Of His Influence On Brazil, David Gueiros Vieira May 1960

A Historical Study Of The Missionary Work Of Dr. George W. Butler And An Analysis Of His Influence On Brazil, David Gueiros Vieira

Master's Theses

In August of 1954,many people were astonished to read that the new president of Brazil, Cafe Filho, was a Protestant. When this occurred, it was scarcely known outside of Brazil that the influence o.f the Protestants there is greatly out of proportion to their numbers.

It would be an almost impossible task to try to trace from the United States, the development of the whole Protestant movement in Brazil. Therefore, this writer has limited the scope or this paper to a scant survey of the beginning of the Protestant missionary work in Brazil, and more particularly to a thorough study …

A Study Of The Roots On Stem Cuttings Of Pedilanthus Tithymaloides Smallii (Millsp.) Dressler, Leonard Morrow May 1960

A Study Of The Roots On Stem Cuttings Of Pedilanthus Tithymaloides Smallii (Millsp.) Dressler, Leonard Morrow

Master's Theses

The geographical distribution of Pedilanthus tithymaloides is variously listed as Tropical America (Engler, 1919); from Florida to Venezuela (Taylor, 1936); and Caribbean America (Dressler, 1957). Because of its use as an ornamental, the plant is also found in Mexico, China and Java (Dressler, 1957); Hawaii (Degener. 1940); and Bermuda (Britton, 1918). Banerji (1951) and Rao (1956) have worked with fresh hedge material from India. White et al (1941) report that the species is found growing on the graves of natives in Zululand and Rhodesis, and acknowledge that the introduction "from American into the native kraals is a mystery."

The present …

A Consolidation Analysis Of The Insured Group Benefits Programs Of A Medium Size Manufacturing Company : Multi-Carrier Vs. Single Carrier, John Walter Ainslie Apr 1960

A Consolidation Analysis Of The Insured Group Benefits Programs Of A Medium Size Manufacturing Company : Multi-Carrier Vs. Single Carrier, John Walter Ainslie

Master's Theses

Since dawn's light first shone upon the cave man, he in his crude way, searched for security for himself and others who lived in his cave. While technological progress had revolutionized the method of seeking ways to make such provisions, the desire for the same has continued as the ultimate goal of the head of the family unit .

Summary - With the growing development of benefit plans in private industry spurred on by federal legislation and the government's progressive interest in social welfare, indications are for further growth in this area. There has been a definite trend as seen …

Gerard Manley Hopkins (1844-1889), Helen Levine Berkowitz Apr 1960

Gerard Manley Hopkins (1844-1889), Helen Levine Berkowitz

Master's Theses

Gerard Manley Hopkins' reputation as a poet has been almost wholly posthumous. He did not "arrive" in a critical way until the l930's when interest seemed to be centered more on the religious implications of his work than on the poetic. Today we are beginning to accept Hopkins as a major poet and to assess his virtues and limitations somewhat more objectively.

The Effect Of Manifest Anxiety And Failure Instructions On Delinquents' Performance On The W.I.S.C. Coding Test, Herbert J. Cross Apr 1960

The Effect Of Manifest Anxiety And Failure Instructions On Delinquents' Performance On The W.I.S.C. Coding Test, Herbert J. Cross

Master's Theses

It is generally accepted by most researchers that motivational factors are important in the prediction of behavior. The nature of the relationship between those factors and behavior is not well understood but appear to depend at least on such variables as effect the difficulty of the behavioral task and the degree of the motivation involved.

A Study Of Hypnotism In The Works Of Nathaniel Hawthorne, Helen Lei Hsu Apr 1960

A Study Of Hypnotism In The Works Of Nathaniel Hawthorne, Helen Lei Hsu

Master's Theses

I propose in this study to examine the uses of hypnotism in two of Hawthorne 's tales: "Ethan Brand" and "The Prophetic Pictures"; and three of Hawthorne's romances: Fanshawe, The House of the Seven Gables, and The Blithedale Romance. My aims are generally these: to investigate Hawthorne's interest in hypnotism with reference to the manifested popularity of hypnotism in his time; to identify Hawthorne's implication of hypnotism in the above tales and romances; and to analyze Hawthorne 's art of interweaving his themes with the practice of hypnosis.

Actuality And Realism In The Poetry Of George Crabbe, Gerald Meredith Garman Apr 1960

Actuality And Realism In The Poetry Of George Crabbe, Gerald Meredith Garman

Master's Theses

It ia a generally accepted fact among critics that George Crabbe was a realist. It will be the purpose of this paper to examine this conclusion for its validity. More exactly, I shall compare the poetry of Crabbe with the historical records of his era and measure how closely Crabbe came to reproducing, realistically, his own times. The paper is really a study of Crabbe's realism as reflected in his poetry with a view toward questioning the verdict of the critics.

In this work I have attempted to dispel several misconceived notions about Crabbe's poetry, but the general conclusions will …

The Portrayal Of Historical Character In Browning's Poetry, Claudius Williams Griffin Apr 1960

The Portrayal Of Historical Character In Browning's Poetry, Claudius Williams Griffin

Master's Theses

Robert Browning is one of the most popular of the English poets, in his day and ours. There are Browning Societies and Browning lovers all over the world, from England and America to Africa and South America. He is also popular with scholars. There are at least twelve biographies, three handbooks to interpret his poetry, and six or more collections of his letters to his wife and friends. What accounts for Browning's popularity? He was not a lyric poet like Shelley, nor was he a nature lover like Wordsworth. Much of his poetry is difficult and requires careful reading. Some …

The Alcohol Problem In The Richmond Metropolitan Area And Management's Role In Combating It, Edmund E. Meredith

Master's Theses

The purpose of the thesis 1 s to show something of the seriousness of the alcohol problem as it is effecting business and industrial organisations. At the same time I have tried to develop information which will be useful to management, especially in the Richmond area, in combating the problem.

Much of the information obtained has been on a confidential basis which has been necessary because of the nature of the problem.

I wish to thank all of those who have taken the time to furnish information. I particularly wish to thank Dr. Thomas S. Berry, Dr. Milton A. Maxwell, …

The Richmond Transit Strike Of 1903, Thomas Jefferson Headlee Jr. Jan 1960

The Richmond Transit Strike Of 1903, Thomas Jefferson Headlee Jr.

Master's Theses

A general history of the American Labor movement introduces the reader to the mainstream of trade unionism in the United States. It is the purpose of this paper however, to record the events of only one of the less important incidents in the twentieth century. That this experiment of labor in Richmond, Virginia in the year 1903 should have failed, does not detract from its value to the historian, for the study of even an unsuccessful strike may add to our knowledge of the various unions and anti-unionism. In addition, it certainly behooves us, as Richmond's, to learn something further …

The Chelation Of Cu(Ii) With 1, 3-Bis(Tris(Hydroxymethyl)Methylamino)-2-Propanol And 1, 3-Bis (2-Hydroxyethylamino)-2-Propanol, David Andrew Jackson Jr. Jan 1960

The Chelation Of Cu(Ii) With 1, 3-Bis(Tris(Hydroxymethyl)Methylamino)-2-Propanol And 1, 3-Bis (2-Hydroxyethylamino)-2-Propanol, David Andrew Jackson Jr.

Master's Theses

The chelating agent 1, 3-bis(2-hydroxyethylamino)-2-propanol dihydrochloride was prepared and preliminary examinations of the Cu(ll) and Fe(lll) complexes were carried out spectrophotometrically. This dihydrochloride as well as 1, 3 bis(tris(hydroxymethyl)methylamino)-2-propanol dihydrochloride. were converted from the chloride salts to their corresponding ammonium bases. The conversion was carried out by passing an aqueous solution of each chloride salt through an ion exchange column containing Amberlite XE-78 resin.

Solutions of these bases were standardized for use in potentiometric titration&. Each ammonium base was titrated with standard perchloric acid at 20°C, 30°C, and 40°C. The dissociation constants. were calculated using these data. Aqueous solutions of …

Preparation Of Elemental Boron And Measurement Of Its Emittance At Incandescent Temperatures, Claude P. Talley Jan 1960

Preparation Of Elemental Boron And Measurement Of Its Emittance At Incandescent Temperatures, Claude P. Talley

Master's Theses

The normal spectral emittance at 0. 65 microns of elemental boron specimens was measured at incandescent temperatures by the hollow-tube method, This was made possible by depositing boron onto thin-walled hollow tubes of graphite and molybdenum. An approximate value of the total hemispherical emittance for boron was also obtained. The deposition of boron was accomplished by chemical vapor plating with boron tribromide and hydrogen. The boron produced was characterized in several ways.

The Development Of Nickel Electrodeposits On Copper Monocrystals As Studied With The Electron Microscope, Lucille Burnett Garmon Jan 1960

The Development Of Nickel Electrodeposits On Copper Monocrystals As Studied With The Electron Microscope, Lucille Burnett Garmon

Master's Theses

Important theoretical and experimental developments in the field of electrocrystallization on single crystals are briefly reviewed and new data presented. The deposition of nickel from a Watts-type bath onto electrolytically polished mono crystals of copper is the system chosen for study. Various aspects of the structural changes in the deposit with increasing thickness are considered. The electron microscope is the main tool employed and the deposit is studied by detaching it from the basis metal as well as by the use of surface replicas. Short backgrounds in crystallography and electron microscopy are included.

A Chromatographic Study Of The Polyphenols In Cured Tobacco, Marvin Dennis Edmonds Jan 1960

A Chromatographic Study Of The Polyphenols In Cured Tobacco, Marvin Dennis Edmonds

Master's Theses

The object of this project was to isolate, separate, and identify the polyphenols in tobacco. Following this, the aim was to develop a method for the quantitative determination of the major polyphenols in tobacco.

Existing methods for the determination of polyphenols in tobacco involve lengthy procedures which are concerned with one or two of the polyphenols rather than the· complete class of compounds. The methods consist of exhaustive extraction procedures, lengthy chromatographic procedures and numerous methods of identification.

Extensive research on the determination of polyphenols by chromatography has been carried out in the field of tobacco and in other fields. …

Supervisor Training A Case Study, Edward M. Miller Jan 1960

Supervisor Training A Case Study, Edward M. Miller

Master's Theses

The purpose of this study is to follow the development of a supervisor training program at the Reynolds Metals Company’s South Plant. In most respects, the initial program followed the principles of training set down in this chapter.

At the present time the program has been in progress one year and the second year has been planned. The program is not represented here as an example of a perfect supervisor training program (if indeed such a program exists). This paper is a record of what was done and an explanation of the reasoning used by management in developing the program. …

The Impact Of Inflation On Selected Wage And Salary Groups In The Richmond Area, Carl Edward Tucker Jan 1960

The Impact Of Inflation On Selected Wage And Salary Groups In The Richmond Area, Carl Edward Tucker

Master's Theses

One of the greatest economic problems existing in the United States today is inflation. This problem is magnified because our population is still growing, there are changes taking place in methods of production, and property and wealth are being re-distributed.

Americans continually want more things which are bigger and better and they are willing to go in debt to have them. They want more and bigger automobiles, highways, more services, better schools, and more leisure time. The effective demand sometimes has a way of getting ahead of the capacity to produce. With this demand for goods, prices continue to rise …
