The Role Of The Adrenal Cortex In Fat Metabolism Of Meriones Unguiculatus, The Mongolian Gerbil, Saffia Baggia Aug 1983

The Role Of The Adrenal Cortex In Fat Metabolism Of Meriones Unguiculatus, The Mongolian Gerbil, Saffia Baggia

Master's Theses

The effects of adrenalectomy and corticoid replacement therapies on survival, weight loss, depot fat and blood free fatty acid were studied in Meriones unguiculatus, the Mongolian gerbil. Adrenalectomized gerbils that received cortisol and aldosterone lived significantly longer and lost significantly more weight than the controls (adrenalectomized gerbils not receiving any treatment) and the sham-operated groups. Cortisol and aldosterone treatment were also effective in mobilizing significantly greater amounts of depot fat into free fatty acid. Cortisol and aldosterone treated groups had significantly less blood free fatty acid than the control and the sham-operated groups.

Easterbrook's Hypothesis And Eyewitness Cue Utilization, Mark R. Hill Aug 1983

Easterbrook's Hypothesis And Eyewitness Cue Utilization, Mark R. Hill

Master's Theses

Although well-supported and historically-important, the Yerkes-Dodson research cannot incorporate current findings on the relationship of arousal and selective attention. Easterbrook's hypothesis suggests that arousal produces a narrowing of attention which selects among available stimuli. Whether information is processed depends on the level of arousal and the nature of the task. As arousal increases, Easterbrook predicts more attention directed to central tasks, while superfluous stimuli are progressively removed. The present investigation studied the predictions of Easterbrook' s hypothesis on.incidental memory in a simulated eyewitness case. College students were aroused to either resting, 50, 65, or 85 percent maximum heartrate by their …

A Frontier Biography: William Campbell Of King's Mountain, David George Malgee Aug 1983

A Frontier Biography: William Campbell Of King's Mountain, David George Malgee

Master's Theses

The purpose of this thesis is to tell William Campbell's biography, simultaneously examining not only his better known military achievements, but also his contributions as a frontier justice, member of the House of Delegates, and an American patriot. Nearly all documentary evidence concerns Campbell's life after 1770. Thus, the primary object of this paper is his last decade, his period of public prominence. Since Campbell's fame was wrought to a large degree by the events of the American Revolution, a major objective of this thesis is to determine Campbell's impact on that struggle for independence.

Immigrants In Richmond, Virginia : Lebanese, Armenians And Greeks, 1900-1925, Kaye Brinkley Spalding Aug 1983

Immigrants In Richmond, Virginia : Lebanese, Armenians And Greeks, 1900-1925, Kaye Brinkley Spalding

Master's Theses

In most of the published histories and memoirs of the city of Richmond there is little or no mention of its post Civil War immigrant population. If any ethnic group is referred to, it is almost invariably either the Germans, the Irish or the Jews, in spite of the fact that it is evident from even the most casual perusal of the Richmond city directory or the telephone directory that there are many city residents whose ancestors were not the traditional Anglo-Saxons, their slaves, or members of the three above mentioned groups.

The Role Of Adrenomedullary Hormones In Survival Of The Adrenalectomized Mongolian Gerbil, Meriones Unguiculatus, Carol B. Ussery Aug 1983

The Role Of Adrenomedullary Hormones In Survival Of The Adrenalectomized Mongolian Gerbil, Meriones Unguiculatus, Carol B. Ussery

Master's Theses

Thee effects of adrenalectomy and catecholamine replacement therapy on survival were studied in Meriones unguiculatus, the Mongolian gerbil. Adrenalectomized gerbils that received epinephrine lived significantly longer than the controls untreated adrenalectomized gerbils) and animals that received either norepinephrine or a combination of epinephrine and norepinephrine. Results also indicated that these epinephrine-treated animals lost more depot fat that either controls or other groups receiving treatment. In spite of the short survival benefit given by epinephrine, the mechanisms governing the critical adrenal dependency in this species remain unknown.

Henry Alexander Wise, Minister To Brazil, 1844-1847, Dennis Rodgers Custis May 1983

Henry Alexander Wise, Minister To Brazil, 1844-1847, Dennis Rodgers Custis

Master's Theses

Henry Wise played an important role in local, state, and national affairs for forty years. He is best remembered as the Governor of Virginia who was responsible for the hanging of John Brown; however, he distinguished himself as a congressman, general, and foreign minister. I have chosen to examine and emphasize Wise's career as Minister to Brazil, 1844-1847. The first chapter of the thesis, however, will provide a biographical sketch of Henry A. Wise.

Wise was born and reared in my native county, Accomack. Although a man of great achievements, he is not well known in the county today. I …

A History Of The Village Of Midlothian, Virginia, Emphasizing The Period 1835-1935, Barbara Irene Burtchett May 1983

A History Of The Village Of Midlothian, Virginia, Emphasizing The Period 1835-1935, Barbara Irene Burtchett

Master's Theses

An overview of Midlothian from its beginning and particularly for the century 1835 to 1935 reveals a village (unincorporated) that developed to house and provide necessities for the people working in the coal mines. The same village continued to survive when the mines closed because the railroad that had come through the village to serve the local people, provided both freight and passenger services, jobs, and transportation to jobs in Richmond. As more people bought cars and trucks the railroad service dwindled but continued to provide passenger service for the entire first half of the twentieth century. Richmond took a …

The Effects Of Positive And Negative Mental Rehearsal Upon Adolescent Boy's Performance On Mirror Drawing, Jeffrey Alan Betman May 1983

The Effects Of Positive And Negative Mental Rehearsal Upon Adolescent Boy's Performance On Mirror Drawing, Jeffrey Alan Betman

Master's Theses

Forty-five adolescent males were divided into three groups of imagery ability based on Marks' Vividness of Visual Imagery Questionnaire. Within the groups of low, medium, and high ability each subject was randomly assigned to one of three mental rehearsal conditions: positive mental rehearsal, negative mental rehearsal or neutral mental rehearsal. Subjects were given the appropriate mental rehearsal instructions and then completed a mirror drawing task. A 3 x 3 (ability level x type of instructions) analysis of variance was performed on the number of errors and elapsed time for the mirror drawing task. Although specific hypotheses had been predicted no …

Locus Of Control And Attribution As Predictors Of Learned Helplessness In Children, Anne Marie Albano Apr 1983

Locus Of Control And Attribution As Predictors Of Learned Helplessness In Children, Anne Marie Albano

Master's Theses

The present study investigated the predictive value of locus of control and internal-external attribution as they relate to learned helplessness in children. Forty four females and twenty seven males enrolled in the fifth and sixth grades of a private elementary school served as subjects. Subjects were group administered the Nowicki Strickland Locus of Control Scale for Children and the KASTAN Attribution Rating Scale. They were then exposed to a guessing task designed to induce helplessness, and subsequently tested on a persistence task. It was expected that subjects would differ in persistence time based upon their internal-external locus of control orientation, …
