Some Aspects Of Financing Interscholastic Athletic Programs In Group Ii High Schools In Virginia, Ellett R. Mcgeorge Aug 1961

Some Aspects Of Financing Interscholastic Athletic Programs In Group Ii High Schools In Virginia, Ellett R. Mcgeorge

Master's Theses

Any consideration of the high school athletic program would seem to be incomplete without attention being given to the method of its financing.

"Since athletics first came into our nation's school system, means and ways and have been sought by which they could be financed." Great strides have been made in raising the status of the athletic program. However, there remain schools that are confronted with the continuous problem of financing their total interscholastic athletic programs. In that face of rising costs of athletic equipment and operation there is tendency to reduce the activities of the interscholastic program and place …

Food Intake As A Function Of Duration Of Food Deprivation In The Albino Rat, John H. Wright

Master's Theses

The present study is an attempt to investigate food intake as a function of hours of food deprivation for a wide range of deprivation values. On the basis of the existing evidence it is expected that intake will increase for the shorter deprivation values but subsequently decrease for the longer deprivation values. Additional interest lies in the secondary measures of weight loss during deprivation, water intake during the consumption period, and weight gained during the consumption period.

Milton And Socinianism, Joseph Johnson Collins Jul 1961

Milton And Socinianism, Joseph Johnson Collins

Master's Theses

The seventeenth century was a period of enormous scholarship and erudition. In the wake of the Reformation and the Humanist movements great interest was awakened in the field of Biblical scholarship, Many of the scholars, lay men, and divines began to devote much of their time and energy to the new Biblical exegesis. The doctrine which was receiving much attention during this period suggested that one might assure that the strongholds of the reformed religion were sufficiently fortified through improved translation and qualified Biblical exegesis.

This was the era which produced John Milton 's method ical and learned tractate of …

Determinants Of Occurrence And Distribution Of Fungi In Marine Environments, Paul W. Kirk Jul 1961

Determinants Of Occurrence And Distribution Of Fungi In Marine Environments, Paul W. Kirk

Master's Theses

Studies ware made of the effects of temperature and nutrient levels on salinity optima for growth and sporulation of Chaotomium Globosum and two marine Pyranomycetes, Torpedospora radiata, and Halosphaeriopais sp. Methods of culture and evaluation of sporulation were also investigated.

Discussion focused on ecological implications of data, in particular, on the probable survival value to a marine-fit fungus or a Phoma pattern mechanism-envolving vegetative and reproductive phases. As the seasons progress, the region where concentrations and proportions or salts are most favorable remains similar to that where vitamin requirements are least and biotic factors are most favorable.

Louis Kossuth In America, 1851-1852, John Bartholomew St. Leger Jun 1961

Louis Kossuth In America, 1851-1852, John Bartholomew St. Leger

Master's Theses

Of the many visitors who came to America before the Civil War, perhaps the strangest guest was Louis Kossuth, the ex-governor and revolutionist who unsuccessfully rebelled against the Hapsburg monarchy. Such visitors as Lafayette, de Tocqueville, Martineau, Dickens and others came primarily to .America to learn more about our society and political institutions. This was not true in the visit of Louis Kossuth. For the first time since our independence was established, an active, central European militarist was upon our shores.

An Improved System Of Cost Control And Budgeting By Product, For A Specialty Paper Mill, Linwood Douglas Hogge Apr 1961

An Improved System Of Cost Control And Budgeting By Product, For A Specialty Paper Mill, Linwood Douglas Hogge

Master's Theses

The large kraft and newsprint mills dominate the paper industry, by the sheer enormity of their size and production. The paper industry is a major growth segment of our nation's industry in all its aspects, however, and the specialty mills and their products continue to grow proportionately with the industry. Fllters, gaskets, and saturated products, once the sole property of leather, rubber and more sophisticated materials, are predominately made of high grade paper products. To further increase their use we must find more and better ways to reduce and control these costs -- It is hoped that we have contributed …

Realism, Heroines, Flaubert, George Gouldin Apr 1961

Realism, Heroines, Flaubert, George Gouldin

Master's Theses

Since Flaubert has been called "le chef de l'ecole realiste", an attempt will be made in this thesis to show how he used realism in the treatment of heroines in his novels. The first chapter will be dedicated to realism itself, showing first how the movement began in France in the mid-nineteenth century before Flaubert and Balzac were considered realists, followed by a modern definition and characteristics, such as: truth, materialism, scientific approach, documentary method, tediousness, mediocrity, sympathy with ordinary life and sociological features.

The other four chapters will be dedicated to Flaubert' s main heroines. Each chapter will have …

Factors Affecting U.S. Marketers' Decisions On Latin America, James M. Frye Apr 1961

Factors Affecting U.S. Marketers' Decisions On Latin America, James M. Frye

Master's Theses

John Gunther's opening comment in his book titled Inside Latin America was, "The first thing to say about Latin America is that no such thing exists. What does exist are twenty independent and highly individual countries which differ from one another strikingly."

There are many who support this school of thought and it is true that the republics of Latin America vary drastically in size, wealth, culture, race, and population; and are presently involved in different stages of political, economic and social revolution.

However, there are many points of common ground for these groups of countries.

Determination Of A Molecular Weight Distribution For Intermediate Degradation Products Of Bovine Plasma Albumin, Sherwin M. Beck Apr 1961

Determination Of A Molecular Weight Distribution For Intermediate Degradation Products Of Bovine Plasma Albumin, Sherwin M. Beck

Master's Theses

Within the last decade several important studies have been made on the large degradation of products of proteins. However, little work has been done on the intermediate degradation products. This study is concerned with the chromatographic separation of intermediate fragments from chrymotryptie hydrolysates of bovine plasma albumin and the determination of the molecular weights of the fragments. An automatic recording differential refractometer employing a differential cell of original design permitted the observation of chromatographic components as they were eluted f rom a column of Sephadex G-50. A fraction collector of original design collected 3 ml. fractions of the effluent. Three …

The American Revolutionary Soldier, 1775-1781, Robert Edward Hanie Apr 1961

The American Revolutionary Soldier, 1775-1781, Robert Edward Hanie

Master's Theses

The object of this paper is to present a survey of soldier life in the American Revolutionary Army. Although the study might be labeled "social history", the researcher believes that history is the product of all the kaleidoscopic events of the past, and that no phenomena exerts an influence of undue proportions. History is alive. History provides the continuing link between the vast "eons" of the past and the remarkable shortness of the "present."

Analysis Of Scintillation Pulse Shapes For Stilbene Using Neutron And Gamma-Ray Excitation, Roland Lee Bowles Apr 1961

Analysis Of Scintillation Pulse Shapes For Stilbene Using Neutron And Gamma-Ray Excitation, Roland Lee Bowles

Master's Theses

In experimental nuclear physics it is often desirable to detect neutrons in the presence of a heavy gemna-ray background. This situation presents a problem since neutron counters also respond to gamma radiation. However, recently it has been shown that the scintillation counter employing an organic crystal scintillator and pulse-shape discrimination may well furnish the solution to this problem.

An Approach To Internal Auditing, Mathew Winfree Jewett Apr 1961

An Approach To Internal Auditing, Mathew Winfree Jewett

Master's Theses

This work was initiated as the result of my interest in this subject, and of my sincere convictions concerning the importance of internal auditing. This is internal auditing as it should be.

When an employee is placed in such a unique position of trust that an auditor occupies he is indeed privileged. I have occupied that position, and was further privileged to have been under the super vision of a very great and dedicated chief auditor. Until the time of his retirement, one year ago, he patiently imparted as much of his knowledge of our subject as was possible for …
