The Impact Of Sexism On Older Women's Mental And Physical Health, Kelli Lynn Mcswan Sep 2000

The Impact Of Sexism On Older Women's Mental And Physical Health, Kelli Lynn Mcswan

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Research has demonstrated that discrimination accounts for a statistically significant portion of the variance in women’s reported physical and mental symptoms above and beyond that accounted for by generic stressors. Furthermore, the literature suggests that discrimination in the elderly has lead to inadequate medical care as well as psychological and physical problems. Relatively little is known, however, about the degree to which older women perceive or experience sexism. This study investigated whether or not elderly women experience sexism and the impact it may have on their mental and physical health.

Assessment Of Religious Motivation And Its Effects On Health Related Behaviors, John Austin Davis Sep 2000

Assessment Of Religious Motivation And Its Effects On Health Related Behaviors, John Austin Davis

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The belief that one’s religious behavior can influence health, either by formal offerings to religious shamans or the uttering of a prayer to an unseen deity, likely predates recorded history and finds its most basic beliefs expressed in Exodus 15:26, “I will put none of the diseases upon you which I put upon the Egyptians; for I am the Lord, your healer.” Findings and observations published in the late 1970’s and early 1980’s that some of the membership among the more conservative denominations with strict proscriptions regarding health behavior experience lower rates of cancer and heart disease supported this belief, …

Development Of A Bedside Examination Of Cognition In Multiple Sclerosis (Becims), Gregory Scott Aaen Jun 2000

Development Of A Bedside Examination Of Cognition In Multiple Sclerosis (Becims), Gregory Scott Aaen

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Approximately 40% of all patients with multiple sclerosis (MS) exhibit some form of cognitive impairment. Identifying impairment in these patients would be beneficial to the patients and to society. However, it is too costly to refer every MS patient for full neuropsychological testing. Consequently, many attempts have been made to develop screening batteries for use by neurologists. Unfortunately, these batteries are rarely used clinically as all require approximately 20-40 minutes to administer and most require special equipment. Given the time constraints of an office visit it is unrealistic to expect neurologists to administer such tests. The present pilot study is …

Therapist Factors As Predictors Of The Experience Of Memory Recovery In Psychotherapy, Tami Lorraine Young Jun 2000

Therapist Factors As Predictors Of The Experience Of Memory Recovery In Psychotherapy, Tami Lorraine Young

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Psychotherapist factors as predictors of client memory recovery of childhood sexual abuse following a period of amnesia were investigated. Marriage and family therapists and clinical psychologists in California were surveyed regarding the degree of research emphasis in academic training, knowledge of memory processes and professional standards of care regarding memory recovery in psychotherapy, degree of ambiguity tolerance, use of memory recovery techniques and client memory recovery. Therapists with greater research emphasis in academic training reported having fewer clients with memory recovery. Also, therapists who were intolerant of ambiguity used memory recovery techniques more than did therapists who were tolerant. Finally, …

Spanish-Speaking Parents’ Attitudes Toward Explanations Of Anesthetic Techniques, Melba Zuniga Mayes

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

PURPOSE Little attention has been given to the issue of obtaining informed consent for conscious sedation and general anesthesia from Spanish-speaking parents living in the United States. The treatment of pediatric dental patients can only be as effective as the extent to which Spanish-speaking parents consent to the dental treatment. The purpose of this study was to identify valuable information that dentists can utilize to obtain an informed consent for conscious sedation and general anesthesia from Spanish-speaking parents.

METHOD Each Spanish-speaking parent in the sample was given one of the following explanations regarding an anesthetic technique: 1) verbal presentation for …

Effects Of Pycnogenol On Microsomal Cytochrome P450 Activity And Apoptosis, Huong Thu Huynh Jun 2000

Effects Of Pycnogenol On Microsomal Cytochrome P450 Activity And Apoptosis, Huong Thu Huynh

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Phytochemicals are naturally-occurring compounds found in plants, many of which are consumed as nutritional supplements by humans. Pycnogenol is a mixture of flavonoid compounds extracted from bark of pine trees (Pinus maritima) and is commercially available in several different pharmaceutical preparations as a free radical scavenger.

Since few scientific studies have documented the pharmacologic effects of pycnogenol, our objective was to characterize the biological activity of pycnogenol. One study looked at the effects of pycnogenol on the three pathways of NNK metabolism: NNK reduction, N-oxidation and a-hydroxylation. NNK is a lung carcinogen. Lung and liver microsomes from 6 mo and …

Orthognathic Surgery In The Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritic Patient, David H. Gilbert

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

This thesis attempts to use a retrospective evidenced base review of a series of five patients afflicted with juvenile rheumatoid arthritis and its inherent dento-facial deformity as a basis for establishing a proposal for a surgical protocol.

A review of pertinent and current literature is performed in describing the disease process as it relates to epidemiology, histopathophysiology, immunology, and clinical presentation. General treatment options are reviewed for the acutely and chronically afflicted patients as well as specific approaches to dento-facial reconstruction.

The studies reviews a series of five female patients who were evaluated and treated by the same surgeon at …

The accuracy of ZeroBase™ orthodontic software program was tested using a sample of 14 male and 14 female untreated subjects classified as skeletal Class II pattern by the Burlington growth center. Growth predictions were carried out by ZeroBaseTM from ages 6,9,12,14,16 in males and 6,9,12 and 14 in females. The mean computer predicted value was compared with the mean radiographic value to test the accuracy of the predictions. Predictions from age 14 were the most accurate (within one standard deviation), whereas the predictions from age 6 were the least accurate. In males, the accuracy of cranial base predictions was 73.3%, …

In Vitro And In Vivo Studies On Bone Formation, Charmaine Richman Mar 2000

In Vitro And In Vivo Studies On Bone Formation, Charmaine Richman

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The research focus of this dissertation deals with two major issues relevant to osteoporosis, the most common metabolic bone disease. These two aspects are: 1) mechanisms that are involved in the regulation of peak bone density, and 2) evaluation of the in vivo effects of Insulin-like Growth Factor Binding Protein-5 (IGFBP-5) as a potential means to treat osteoporosis.

The first study compared two strains of inbred mice, one with high bone density and one with low bone density, to determine when and to what extent bone density accumulation during postnatal and pubertal growth contributed to the observed differences in bone …

The Effect Of Stress And Genetic Factors On Alcohol Consumption Among Males In Olancho District, Honduras, Gloria Amanda Madrid Jan 2000

The Effect Of Stress And Genetic Factors On Alcohol Consumption Among Males In Olancho District, Honduras, Gloria Amanda Madrid

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Alcoholism is a major public health problem globally. More than twenty studies have examined the association between the neurotransmitter dopamine DRD2 TaqI polymorphism and the onset of alcoholism, with half supporting an association. This study was based on the assumption that there is a relationship between the presence of the DRD2, one’s exposure to stress, and alcohol consumption. We examined the gene-stress interactional model in a sample of 309 males of Mayan descendents in the Olancho district of Honduras (age range 18-87). Participants were interviewed by a health care professional and blood samples were obtained for genetic identification. The Michigan …

The ethnic composition was 53.3% White/Anglo Americans, 19.3% Hispanics or Latinos and 10.2% Black/African Americans. The constructs of the Theory of Planned Behavior (attitude, subjective norm, and perceived behavioral control and their underlying beliefs) were assessed to determine the predictors of low-fat milk and regular soda consumption. A cross-sectional design with group-administered questionnaires was utilized.

Most participants (89.6%, n = 636) …

Risk Factors Associated With Infant Mortality Among Very Low Birthweight Infants Of Teenage Mothers In San Bernardino County, C. Letitia Henry Jan 2000

Risk Factors Associated With Infant Mortality Among Very Low Birthweight Infants Of Teenage Mothers In San Bernardino County, C. Letitia Henry

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Background. Typically, infant mortality decreases as maternal age increases in teenagers. In contrast to these national data, San Bernardino County (SBC) experienced a different phenomenon in 1989-1994 among very low birthweight (VLBW) infants. The infant mortality rate (IMR) of VLBW infants born to mothers under 17 years old (283 per 1000 live births) was significantly lower than the IMR of VLBW infants born to mothers between the ages of 17-19 years old (430 per 1000 live births) (p = .02).

Purpose. The purpose of the study was to explain the discrepancy between IMRs of VLBW infants of younger teenage mothers …
