This correlational descriptive study investigated the relationship between depression, degree of dyspnea, and performance of daily activities in male and female patients with severe chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). The problem was to determine (a) the influence of depression on the degree of dyspnea experienced and performance of daily activities, and (b) the relationship between the degree of dyspnea experienced and the performance of daily activities by male and female patients with severe COPD.

Effect Of Disulfiram On The Urinary Excretion Of 5-Hydroxytryptophol And 5-Hydroxyindoleacetic Acid In Subjects Consuming Serotonin Rich Foods, Amy G. Tordecilla

The effect of disulfiram and/or serotonin rich foods (SRF) on the urinary excretion of 5-hydroxytryptophol (5-HTOL) and 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid (5-HIAA) in normal male subjects was investigated. Urine collections were obtained on 1) regular serotonin free diet, 2) SRF, 3) serotonin free diet with disulfiram, and 4) SRF with disulfiram. Urinary excretion of 5-HTOL in ug/gm creatinine during disulfiram administration was 112.0 ± 24.1. Five HTOL (ug/gm creatinine) with disulfiram and SRF increased to 1532 ± 352.0 (p < 0.001). Five-HIAA (mg/g creatinine) before and after SRF was 3.4 ± .44 and 33.1 ± 6.1 respectively, p < 0.001. With disulfiram and SRF the excretion of was 24.2 ± 3.2 mg/g creatinine which was significantly greater than when on the regular diet (p < 0.001) than the excretion on SRF alone (p < 0.05)

The best understood functional activity of the pineal gland is its diurnal production of melatonin in response to environmental lighting cues. Several enzymes of the melatonin pathway respond to daily photoperiod changes, for example hydroxyindole-O-methyltransferase (HIOMT) and serotonin N-acetyltransferase (SNAT). Increased levels of the glycolytic enzyme neuron-specific enolase (NSE) are thought to reflect increased physiological demands placed on neurons and neuroendocrine tissues. Homodimer non-neuronal enolase isoenzyme (NNE) is immunolocalized to cells, and the hybrid enolase (consisting of subunits from NSE and NNE) has been seen in cerebellar stellate and basket cells. Prostaglandins (PG) have been implicated in pathogenesis of periapical lesions. The purpose of this study was to determine the concentrations of PGE₂ in human periapical lesions. Periapical specimens from patients with clinical signs and symptoms of chronic and acute apical periodontitis were obtained and immediately frozen in liquid nitrogen. Periradicular tissues from unerupted third molars were frozen and used as controls. The concentration of PGE₂ was determined by radioimmunoassay. Previous work conducted in our laboratories, using a murine model, suggested that soluble factors secreted by tumor cells suppress lymphocyte responses. To apply this premise to human tumors, we studied the effects of UC729-6 (lymphoblastoid B-cell) and M21-HPB (malignant melanoma) conditioned media (CM) on lymphocyte proliferation assays, as well as on the growth of other cells. The CM was collected at 2-5 day intervals from cultures of UC729-6 and M21- HPB cells in serum-free media. Previous studies indicate that root resorption is a frequent sequela to significant amounts of periodontal repair following experimental regenerative periodontal surgical procedures in animal models. To study if root resorption can be reduced or prevented, periodontal repair was evaluated in large horizontal circumferential defects in the dog in the absence of influence from the oral environment. Several monoclonal antibody (MAb) types derived from mice have been developed specifically for the use of targeting human tumors. The specificity of these murine MAb’s for their respective tumor antigens is very high making them potentially good immunotherapeutic agents for cancer treatment and diagnosis. A limiting factor in using these murine MAb’s in patients is the development of human anti-mouse antibody (HAMA). The presence of HAMA may reduce the effectiveness of MAb for tumor targeting. The author undertook to develop an extraoral model for predicting mandibular incisor relapse similar to the model described by Harvey and Sheldon Peck. Whereas the Peck and Peck method involves intraoral measurements, the method described in this paper relied on the taking of measurements from the patient's pre-treatment plaster models. Two hundred and sixty teeth were measured both orally and on plaster casts, and several statistical tests were performed to isolate any differences between the intraoral and extraoral methods. This qualitative study examined the congruence between health beliefs and behavior as reported by 30 Cambodian (Khmer) refugee women in Southern California. Utilizing in-home interviewing in the Khmer language, data was gathered on 226 illness episodes occurring among 157 family members over an eight-month span. Informants reported a strong maternal role in health care decision making with all ages of children. Adult decision making demonstrated an individualistic pattern. Causes of illness were attributed primarily to humeral imbalances and illness avoidance behavior reflected these beliefs. Treatment was a blend of scientific and traditional medicine. Most insect circulatory physiologists believe the insect heart to be myogenic. There is disagreement, however, about mechanisms regulating heart function. Modulation is considered to occur via either neural or neurohormonal mechanisms but there is little existing data of the type necessary for proving one mechanism or the other. Using the recording technique of impedance conversion, heartbeat patterns were established for intact Honey Bees during rest and also during nectar feeding and locomotion, activities that both result in modulating heartbeat. During Eocene time sediment accumulated in Fossil Lake, in what developed to be a small linear and structurally controlled basin. Fossil Lake was one of several lakes into which the Green River Formation was deposited in Wyoming, Utah and Colorado.

Detailed stratigraphic analysis of the Lower Unit of the Fossil Butte Member revealed a well developed lacustrine sequence south of Fossil Butte, and indicates four major depositional facies: (1) open lacustrine, (2) marginal lacustrine, (3) carbonate mudflat, and (4) marginal fluvio-deltaic. The area of study is located on the north flank of the northeast-southwest trending Blue Mountains Anticlinorium in north-central Oregon. The primary geologic problems investigated were: 1) the age and stratigraphic position of leaf-bearing tufts mapped as Oligo-Miocene John Day Formation but surrounded by andesitic basalts of the Eo-Oligocene Clarno Formation, 2) the age of "olivine basalt" mapped as John Day Formation by some workers but referred to the Clarno Formation by others, and 3) the petroleum potential of the Fossil area.

The intratumor distribution of a new monoclonal antibody-hapten-based delivery system was examined. From two marine antibodies, Hybritech, Inc. has developed a bifunctional antibody (BPA) with specificities against CEA (ZCE-025 or GEM 231) and against one of two derivatives of [¹¹¹In]-benzyl-EDTA (CHA 255), EOTUBE or BLEDTA IV, to form ZCE/CHA or CEM/CHA. BFA accumulates in CEA-expressing tissue and clears from non-antigenic tissues prior to administration of an [¹¹¹In]-hapten.

Fetal rat lung (FRL) cells incubated in the presence of retinoic acid or dexamethasone exhibit altered ¹²⁵I-epidermal growth factor (EOF) binding capacity. Retinoic acid enhances ¹²⁵I-EGF binding 3-fold following 24 hours of 37° incubation. In contrast, FRL cells incubated in the presence of dexamethasone display a 2-fold reduction in ¹²⁵I-EGF binding capacity. The change in binding capacity, induced by either hormone, was due to alterations in the average number of receptors per cell as determined by Scatchard analysis of ¹²⁵I-EGF binding. The purpose of this retrospective study was to compare the COCR differences in pretreatment and posttreatment CI II Div I patients. Similar sample groups were chosen from patients of the graduate orthodontic clinic at Loma Linda University School of Dentistry.

Each patient's models were mounted on a Sam II articulator using a face bow transfer and a centric relation check bite. The COCR discrepancies in the anterior-posterior, superior-inferior, and side-shift dimensions were determined with the Mandibular Position Indicator.

The hyperglycemic metabolic condition found in diabetes mellitus leads to the development of sensory neuropathies and causes delayed and incomplete neuronal regeneration. Diabetic sensory neuropathy has been shown to contribute to the impairment of light touch and low frequency vibratory perception. It is proposed that the regeneration of receptors that detect these sensations will be delayed and incomplete in diabetic animals with uncontrolled hyperglycemia. This study addresses the effects of diabetes on the regeneration of Meissner corpuscles, distal sensory endings that perceive light touch and low frequency vibration.
