Librarians in federal universities in Nigeria have had academic status since 1993. They have a research and publication requirement for promotion, and are prominent in the professional literature. While the terminal degree remains the master's in library and information science, it is increasingly common for a doctorate to be required for librarian promotion in Nigerian universities. Libraries in the US have a different ethical obligation regarding privacy than do the companies behind the most popular social networking websites. By maintaining a presence on social networking sites, libraries risk legitimizing companies whose primary goal is profit, and whose profit is based on the free flow of information about their customers. This article outlines a model for thinking about these two seemingly contradictory perspectives on privacy. Despite legitimate concerns over privacy, social networking sites are not entirely incompatible with the mission of most libraries. This study explores students' use of information and communication technology (ICT) for research and the reason for choosing ICT as a tool. A questionnaire was distributed at a university of education, using a stratified sampling method to select respondents. The library and the e-learning centre were covered. The results revealed a high use of electronic media. Respondents prefer the Internet over the library. Problems include slow server speed, lack of computer knowledge, inadequate number of computers, noise from staff and students in the library, and an inadequate library collection.

The paper focuses on the need for a national information policy in Nigeria in the face of globalization. The paper is not anti-globalization, but believes that although globalization facilitates global access to information and its generating media, it also has the potential of exposing Nigerians to obscene information materials, and of dumping unwholesome, improperly packaged and substandard information resources in the country. The University has a cybercafé that provides Internet services to the members of the university community and their neighbors. This study analyzed the use of the Internet facilities by faculty members. Of the 224 copies of the questionnaire distributed, 120 were completed and returned. Result showed that more than half of the respondents acquired their Internet skills through self study/instruction and more than one-third ) rated their Internet skill as average. A study was undertaken to assess dentists' attitude towards the Internet and electronic resources. A questionnaire was distributed among the dental teachers and students of ten dental colleges and hospitals of Punjab State of India to find out the use of Internet services and electronic resources. A study was conducted at Pramukhswami Medical College in Karamsad, India, to assess the use of computers and the Internet by health care professionals, in order to gain more information about information-seeking behavior. Results of a questionnaire that was completed by 194 respondents frequent Internet use by nearly all. Respondents use the Internet most often to seek teaching and patient care information. While most respondents reported adequate or good computer skills, few had formal training. It is recommended that the library take advantage of the opportunity to provide an information literacy program and further information about useful web sources.

School libraries have an important role in encouraging reading and discovery among students and in augmenting teaching. They do these things with strong collections, instruction and orientation, and providing a physical environment that is conducive to learning. This article reports on a study of secondary school students in Nigeria. Students were surveyed on their use of the school library and their views on collections and services. The results showed widespread dissatisfaction with the collections and a lack of instruction and other services.

This research examines students' familiarity with reference resources as well as the necessity of providing user education based on students' point of view. A sample of 351 students were given a questionnaire of 22 questions. Findings show that students find user education necessary and beneficial, and that students would like to see expert and professional librarians in the reference department.

Using the case study method, the author investigated the availability and accessibility of information sources and the use of library services in the university library, Michael University of Agriculture, Umudike, Abia State, Nigeria. The population was made up of 1,000 registered library users, with a random sample of 200. A response rate of 168 was recorded. The study revealed that information sources in the library are not readily available nor easily accessible and concludes that the independent variables of availability and accessibility have influence on, and a significant relationship with, the use of library services.

A study of 128 people in the rural areas of Delta State, Nigeria, showed that only a relatively small number have access to computers, telephones, and radio, while virtually none have Internet access. Since Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) are vital for development, the authors recommend aggressive government action to remedy this situation through the creation of infrastructure and educational efforts.

This paper investigates books borrowed by final-year students of computer science and engineering at Velagapudi Ramakrishan Siddhartha Engineering College Library during 2004–05. The analysis shows the number of books used, authorship patterns, age of collection, country-wide distribution of books used, type of publisher, ranked list of publishers, and ranked list of most frequently-used titles. Conclusions are derived from each point of analysis.

The study investigated students' characteristics and their use of library services in the University of Uyo. Students' academic discipline, year of study, and socio-economic status were considered. The results of a structured questionnaire, returned by 528 students (81%) were subjected to t-test analysis, ANOVA, and multiple classification analysis (MCA) at 0.05 alpha level of significance. The findings revealed that students' academic discipline with 59%, year of study with 51%, and socio-economic status with 64% affected their use of library services.

This study uses a descriptive survey to study the attitude of selected librarians in Ibadan, Oyo state, Nigeria, toward information communication technology (ICT). The population includes 41 librarians in four institutions. Data were collected using an instrument adapted from the Igberia and Chakrabarti (1990) Computer Anxiety and Attitude Towards Microcomputer Utilization (CAATMU) scale, and the librarian attitude questionnaire developed by Ramzan (2004). Two research questions were developed to guide the study. The paper discusses study and reading habits of postgraduate students in selected Nigerian universities. Two hundred questionnaires were sent to five Nigerian universities. A total of 156 (78%) were returned. Students were asked about time and duration of study, learning styles and methods, materials used, and motivation. The results showed that the students did not see the library as a primary place to study. Students' purposes for study include personal knowledge and skills, and examination preparation.

The paper reports a citation analysis of the pioneer Covenant University bachelor degree students' research project reports of 2006, accepted by the university academic departments and submitted to the university library. The analysis was performed to help the library determine which materials that are most sought after and used by students. 557 research reports were analyzed, which generated a total of 14,655 citations, an average of 26.3 citations per research report. The type of material cited, number of Internet/electronic resource citations, and recency of citations were analyzed. The result corroborated the findings of citation analyses from the literature. This article describes recent diversity programming at Texas A&M University Libraries, and the evaluation of that programming. The Libraries created a Public Relations Associate for Diversity Programs and Events Coordinator position, who works with a Diversity Program Coordinating Committee. The coordinator and committee worked to meet diversity goals in communication, coordination, and celebration. They surveyed Libraries' faculty and staff on the impact of diversity programming. Most favorable programming included panel discussions by international students and by Libraries staff members with disabilities. The survey results have identified strengths and weaknesses in the program as well as suggestions for future programming.

School libraries have been the subject of a number of regulations since the establishment of the Greek nation, but school libraries have never been treated as an essential feature of educational programmes. They lack space, funds and equipment. Moreover, teachers are not aware of their role and services in contemporary schools. This article reports on a study that analyzed written texts produced by primary school teachers, discussing the function, role, and potential of school libraries. The teachers participating in the research described the ideal library, which is quite different from the reality in primary schools.

This paper demonstrates how some of Google's search functionalities can be used to locate information to assist in the cataloging process. In addition, the results of an informal survey of catalogers shows that while some respondents never considered using Google or prefer different methods for finding information, others find Google to be a good supplement to "traditional" cataloging tools.

A well-managed organization sees employees as the source of quality and productivity. This study examines the perception of work motivation in relation to job satisfaction and organizational commitment of library personnel in academic and research libraries in Oyo state, Nigeria. Two hundred library personnel (41% female, 59% male) were selected through a total enumeration sampling from five research and four academic libraries. The nature and organization of digital information are examined from a philosophical point of view. A Platonic model is first suggested, based on both the Platonic allegory of the two worlds and the hypothesis of the informationised universe. Ancient classification schemata are presented in terms of the relationship types involved, concluding with an attempt to view the semantically rich web management system as an extended Platonic model.
