Dolphin Skin Cfd Analysis For Biomimetic And Hydrodynamic Applications, Joseph Krahn Apr 2024

Dolphin Skin Cfd Analysis For Biomimetic And Hydrodynamic Applications, Joseph Krahn

Liberty University Research Week

The skin of dolphins, along with other aquatic creatures such as sharks, has been long studied for its drag-reducing flow properties. The theorized behavior of flow over dolphin skin involves the trapping of fluid within the sinusoidal grooves of the skin mesh. This trapping mechanism energizes the flow, producing vortices and a partial slip condition on the skin surface, reducing boundary layer separation, and enhancing streamlines. Amy Lang et. al from the University of Alabama have investigated this phenomenon by constructing a physical demonstration and collecting experimental data of specified flow parameters for a “no-skin” control and “skin” case. Through …

Improving Student Engagement Despite Lowering Attention Spans In The Classroom, Kaycee Lee Apr 2024

Improving Student Engagement Despite Lowering Attention Spans In The Classroom, Kaycee Lee

Liberty University Research Week

Attention spans have been decreasing throughout society for many years, partially due to the constant increase of technological advances. The average human attention span of eight seconds is particularly concerning to teachers and others in the classroom. It does not seem that the average attention span is ever going to increase, so teachers must implement intentional methods and strategies within their classroom to keep their students’ attention. Physical activities, technology and hands-on lesson supports, small group instruction, shorter lesson times, flexible seating, and differentiated instruction are all strategies supported by research to improve student engagement within the classroom. Every classroom …

The Advancement Of Genome Editing Tools - A Blessing Or A Curse?, Haeun Tae Apr 2024

The Advancement Of Genome Editing Tools - A Blessing Or A Curse?, Haeun Tae

Liberty University Research Week

Just over a decade ago, the Clustered Regularly Interspaced Short Palindromic Repeats (CRISPR-Cas) system was identified in prokaryotes. The emergence of this system has expanded the potential of genome editing, bringing what were once thought impossible into reality in the fields of biotechnology, agriculture, and medicinal research. Recently, a eukaryotic CRISPR-Cas-like system, Fanzor, was reported under a novel class of the RNA-guided DNA cleavage system termed OMEGA. Thus, it was the goal of this thesis to share the history of genome editing tools, compare the structure and functions of reported RNA-guided DNA cleavage systems, review their current and prospective applications, …

The Future Of Sound: A New Methodology For The Production Of Modular Synthesizer Music, Darius Holweg Apr 2024

The Future Of Sound: A New Methodology For The Production Of Modular Synthesizer Music, Darius Holweg

Liberty University Research Week

Modular Synthesizers have been experimented with for musical purposes since their inception. In recent years, there has been an interest in utilizing the versatility, flexibility, and self-generative nature of modular synthesizers to innovate in music in a way that other synthesizers and modern musical tools cannot. There is much space for improved mixing and recording techniques to maximize the sonic quality and commercial viability of modular synthesizer music, compared to the way that modular synthesizer based music is typically recorded. This paper explores the necessity for, and implementation of an improved commercial model for multitrack recording and mixing modular synthesizers, …

The Looking Glass Self In Film: The Effects Of A Positive Self Image, Rebecca Kicinski Apr 2024

The Looking Glass Self In Film: The Effects Of A Positive Self Image, Rebecca Kicinski

Liberty University Research Week

The theory of the Looking Glass Self suggests that an individual’s self image is socially constructed through interactions with others. Numerous studies support this theory, finding the significance of self image in individual lives as well as the impact that people, or outsiders, around the individuals can have on their self image. Generation Z in particular struggles to maintain a positive self image in the face of others. A close textual analysis of the films It’s a Wonderful Life (1947) and Hugo (2011) will show clearly that the Looking Glass Self is not only relevant despite its age, but also …

The Technical Code For Worship, Rayah Smith Apr 2024

The Technical Code For Worship, Rayah Smith

Liberty University Research Week

The Church is the body of Christ, and when individuals within the body of Christ come together in small gatherings, they participate in corporate worship. While the Bible does not specifically address how to apply technology within the corporate worship context, it does articulate how the Church should worship and what the focus should be. Verses such as Hebrews 12:28-29, which says, “Therefore let us be grateful for receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, and thus let us offer to God acceptable worship, with reverence and awe, for our God is a consuming fire,” and Hebrews 13:15, “Through him …

Glories Eclipsed: The Unsung Legacy Of August Von Mackensen And His Army On The Eastern Front Of World War I, 1914-1915, Christian Mumpower Apr 2024

Glories Eclipsed: The Unsung Legacy Of August Von Mackensen And His Army On The Eastern Front Of World War I, 1914-1915, Christian Mumpower

Liberty University Research Week

English-language accounts and appraisals of the Western Front have long dominated the historiography of the Great War. This prevailing interpretation tends to cast a shadow over other, nonetheless critical sectors of fighting and diminish contributions made on these fronts by less well-known commanders and the men who served under them. While the Western Front boasts a rich catalog of scholarship, few popular accounts exist about those who carved out a legacy for themselves on the Eastern Front, a sector of the war that saw some of the most desperate fighting but has since been relegated to the footnotes of history. …

One Law To Rule Them All: Jurisdictional Conflicts In King Philip's War, Karen Jones Apr 2024

One Law To Rule Them All: Jurisdictional Conflicts In King Philip's War, Karen Jones

Liberty University Research Week

This paper looks to reveal legal roots to the most consequential conflict in colonial American history, King Philip's War, which marked the end of the New England native's resistance to English governance. While it is common for many to assume that the Puritans' behavior toward the natives directly fueled the flames of war, a conflict of this scale was fueled by an irreparable legal divide between the natives and English. Notwithstanding the social and religious differences, Native Americans and English were diametrically opposed in their legal views. The Puritans came from a highly ordered society governed by the rule of …

Shadow Mimicking The Darkness: Hans Asperger’S Relation To National Socialism, Dylan Cumbo Apr 2024

Shadow Mimicking The Darkness: Hans Asperger’S Relation To National Socialism, Dylan Cumbo

Liberty University Research Week

This paper looks at the personal and professional relationship between Hans Asperger, a psychiatrist during the Second World War in Nazi-controlled Austria, and the National Socialist movement. I argue that while Hans Asperger had a mixed relationship with National Socialism, he unarguably played a role in implementing its policies and was found to have been cooperative with the Nazi’s agenda by the SS. Influenced by his family, faith, and childhood experiences, Asperger’s background led him to become active within the medical field. During his time within the clinic at Vienna, Asperger rapidly rose the ranks thanks to the dismissal of …

Young Ireland: An Investigation Into The Events Of 1848, Thomas Gillmeister Apr 2024

Young Ireland: An Investigation Into The Events Of 1848, Thomas Gillmeister

Liberty University Research Week

Nationalism played a critical role in the formation of what is now Europe. It has led the way to new nations, wars, rivalries, and distrust. But it is an important area in history that needs more attention, particularly in 1848. It was a year of revolutions and for some nations true change, but for many nations that experienced revolution, they were put down. In Italy, Giuseppe Mazzini tried and failed numerous times to liberate Italy from Austrian rule and then to unify it. Much of Europe experienced a famine that left many destitute and forced millions to immigrate to America. …

A House Divided And The Hills They Died On: Hussite Factions And The Hussite Wars, Maeghan Eggert Apr 2024

A House Divided And The Hills They Died On: Hussite Factions And The Hussite Wars, Maeghan Eggert

Liberty University Research Week

This paper looks at the followers of Jan Hus – the Hussites –, which is a story of conviction, division, and violence. Jan Hus was a figurehead of the Bohemian Reformation (or pre-Reformation as it occurred a century before Luther’s Protestant Reformation), and his teachings led to reforms in the Bohemian Church, his death, and a group of followers known as the Hussites. As the Hussites faced opposition from the Crown and the Church, they began to differ in their approaches to reform. The Hussites split into moderate and radical groups who fought the Catholic Church in the Hussite Wars. …

Effects Of Two-Minutes Versus Four-Minutes Active Recovery On A “Booster” Vo2max Treadmill Test, Jelena Obretkovich Apr 2024

Effects Of Two-Minutes Versus Four-Minutes Active Recovery On A “Booster” Vo2max Treadmill Test, Jelena Obretkovich

Liberty University Research Week

Maximal aerobic capacity (ie. VO2max) represents an individual’s cardiovascular fitness level. Prior studies have assessed various VO2max protocols with several studies suggesting that a booster max, with a two-minute (2min) active recovery period, improves final VO2max values in many subjects. However, a four-minute (4min) active recovery period for booster max testing has not been evaluated. This study’s purpose was to assess the impact of 2min vs. 4min active recovery on VO2max values. In a counter-balanced order, 41 aerobically trained males completed one of two treadmill VO2max GXT (Max1) trials followed by a 2min or 4min active recovery followed by a …

Devastation Through Assimilation: The Struggle For Cultural Preservation In The Armenian Genocide, Evelyn Loftin Apr 2024

Devastation Through Assimilation: The Struggle For Cultural Preservation In The Armenian Genocide, Evelyn Loftin

Liberty University Research Week

The Armenian genocide was detrimental to Armenian society; permanently altering Armenian faith, language, and culture. The history and relationship between the Ottoman Turks and the Christian Armenians is a long, drawn-out, tumultuous history that came to a boiling point during the Great War. The Anatolian Peninsula was forever changed due to the implementation of Turkification by the Ottoman government and the individual Turkish citizens' hatred towards the Armenian people. Through violent and traumatic actions, the Ottomans attempted to eradicate the Armenians along with any trace of their culture. Following the elimination of the male Armenian population, the responsibility for the …

The Comparison Between Two Aerobic Capacity Tests On Vo2max In Ultramarathon, Garrett Toms Apr 2024

The Comparison Between Two Aerobic Capacity Tests On Vo2max In Ultramarathon, Garrett Toms

Ultramarathons consist of any distance greater than the standard marathon distance (26.2 miles or 46 kilometers) and participation has increased since the late 20th century (Hoffman and Fogard, 2011). Although popularity has increased, a gold standard for aerobic capacity testing is yet to be established. The purpose was to compare two aerobic capacity tests on VO2max in ultramarathon runners. Eight Ultramarathon athletes were recruited for the study (36.4years + 10.1 years, 179.1cm + 4.0cm, 77.3kg + 7.9kg, 15.4%BF + 5.8%BF), one participant was dropped from the study due to inability to complete the necessary protocols. Participants reported to the Human …

Shining Lights In A Crooked Generation: The Experiences And Impact Of Soviet Evangelical Youth, Abigail Coker Apr 2024

Shining Lights In A Crooked Generation: The Experiences And Impact Of Soviet Evangelical Youth, Abigail Coker

Liberty University Research Week

During the 20th century, western observers seemed to view the Soviet Union as an enormous monolith of grayness. Like a black-and-white movie, Soviet citizens trudged to work under gray skies, listening to gray radio propaganda and living gray lives punctuated only by the redness of unexpected government purges. However, this view of the Soviet Union misses the complexities and colors that made life survivable to the average Soviet citizen. Like a Technicolor film, the story of Soviet evangelical youth brings light and color to modern understandings of the Soviet experience. Despite severe pressure from their secular surroundings, evangelical youth displayed …

The Relationship Between Imposter Syndrome, Household Income, And Level Of Education, Miebaka Favour Roberts Apr 2024

The Relationship Between Imposter Syndrome, Household Income, And Level Of Education, Miebaka Favour Roberts

Liberty University Research Week

Imposter syndrome has been documented in the literature as a challenge across all professional fields, for men and women. Imposter syndrome is defined as a state of high-performing individuals attributing achievements to luck and contingency rather than skill and merit. Those experiencing imposter syndrome often live in fear of being exposed as a fraud or losing credibility. Methods: The current study applies the Literature Matrix Method by Judith Garrad to aggregate and synthesize literature for three factors: Imposter Syndrome, household income, and educational level. Further, inclusion criteria for search terms included publication year (2019-2023), document type (Peer-reviewed), and language (English). …

Manumission, Willed, Or Buying Their Freedom - From The Colonization Of The New World To The Civil War, Patrick Burghardt Apr 2024

Manumission, Willed, Or Buying Their Freedom - From The Colonization Of The New World To The Civil War, Patrick Burghardt

Liberty University Research Week

In 1782 an act of the Virginia General Assembly enabled the voluntary manumission (freeing) of thousands of slaves in the 80 or so years prior to the Emancipation Proclamation. The motivation of each slave holder to free their slaves varied from individual to individual and many of the "freedom documents" give some indication as to their thoughts, beliefs, and intentions. Though it is an unfortunate historical reality that slaves were treated as chattel property, this led to a documentation process in the court system that preserved these documents for future study. In 2022, Stephen Andrew Langland of the Helm School …

Y Theory: A New Theory Of Teaching Composition, Sophia Jantomaso Apr 2024

Y Theory: A New Theory Of Teaching Composition, Sophia Jantomaso

Liberty University Research Week

This thesis proposes an original theory of teaching composition structured through the concept of empathy as a scaffold for technical and positively impactful writing. The full name of the theory is Writing in Empathy (WIE) which I then translate to the letter/shape symbol, Y, consequently, Y Theory. Y is a shape symbol which images my theory’s emphasis on writing as a means for human connection, showing how the three points of a traditional rhetorical triangle (communicator, audience, message) collapse in, connect at a shared middle space, and emerge from the shared space as the operation of these three elements. Y …

Cryptology For Christ: Steganography, Evangelism, And Closed Access Countries, Christopher Jaus Apr 2024

Cryptology For Christ: Steganography, Evangelism, And Closed Access Countries, Christopher Jaus

Liberty University Research Week

Digital steganography is rooted in the ancient practice of hiding messages and has evolved dramatically with technology. In the Christian worldview, modern technology's ethical application is rooted in the creation mandate, where Genesis 1:28 commands mankind to subdue the earth and have dominion over it. The Bible tells of examples where God directly instructs time-period specific technological application. For example, in Exodus 36, two men were charged with the task of using their technological skills to create objects for the purpose of housing the unique presence of God. Exodus 36:1 says, “Bezalel and Oholiab and every craftsman in whom the …

An Integrative Approach To The Existential Problem Of Evil In A Post Pandemic World, Jacob Byrd Apr 2024

An Integrative Approach To The Existential Problem Of Evil In A Post Pandemic World, Jacob Byrd

Liberty University Research Week

Within the past few years, the world has experienced a unique iteration of the problem of evil due to the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic. Due to this, Christian theologians, and especially pastors, have been left to provide answers in the wake of the sufferings caused by the pandemic. For instance, studies have shown a correlation between the pandemic and a mass increase in mental illness in the United States. This is one data point among many instances that add to the uniqueness of the recent, heightened, and widespread existential problem produced by the pandemic. How, then, with the many …

Optimized Pid Controller For Atomizer Geometry: Artificial Intelligence Versus Traditional Methods, Oluwafemi Samuel Dada Apr 2024

Optimized Pid Controller For Atomizer Geometry: Artificial Intelligence Versus Traditional Methods, Oluwafemi Samuel Dada

Liberty University Research Week

This research compares two types of proportional-integral-derivative (PID) tuning methods, traditional and machine learning, to enable atomizer geometry modulation for effective breakup of non-Newtonian slurry. Non-Newtonian slurries are not easily disintegrated due to their nature of having a high viscosity property that keeps changing during atomization. During effective atomization, consistent droplets are produced, and these are useful in many applications such as rocket propulsion where the breakup of gel propellant leads to better combustion that causes efficient propulsion. A baseline PID controller aims to enable the adequate adjustment of the atomizer nozzle diameter to compensate for steam pressure drop during …

Counting The Cost Of Too Many C-Sections In Low-Risk Deliveries, Andrea Mackenzie Apr 2024

Counting The Cost Of Too Many C-Sections In Low-Risk Deliveries, Andrea Mackenzie

Liberty University Research Week

After more than a decade of declining, c-section delivery rates in the United States are once again rising. In 2021, there were 1,174,545 c-sections, accounting for 32.1% of all U.S. live births. Remarkably, c-sections are even increasing in young, low-risk, first-time deliveries. Csections can save lives; however, when elected for non-medical reasons, they pose unnecessary short and long-term risks for both mother and child and cost Medicaid about 50% more than natural deliveries. To quantify unnecessary c-sections in low-risk deliveries, we measured variation in clinician practice, identified excessively high rates, and estimated the national and state fiscal impact of the …

They migrate at night, using several different migration routes across North America. This study aimed to comprehensively investigate the migration dynamics of the Northern Saw-Whet Owl. An audio lure broadcasting the male territorial call was utilized to attract owls into a linear array of mist nets. These nets were operated nightly from late October to early December, capturing owls for further examination. This method is essential, as the species’ presence is …

Place We Call Home: The Death Of Human Flourishing In Non-Places, Gioia Calabretta Apr 2024

Place We Call Home: The Death Of Human Flourishing In Non-Places, Gioia Calabretta

Liberty University Research Week

This presentation examines the inhumane nature of our current built environment. Automobile-centricity was ushered in to America after World War II had ended, and this development ultimately led to significant dependence on vehicles. This prevailing dependency directly eliminates the population’s choice; dictating where people will go, how they will spend their money, and ultimately, their lives. This subjection has ramifications for everyone, but the effect is more pronounced for the elderly, disabled, children, and those without access to an automobile. Present solutions consist of more vehicular accommodation, more travel lanes, and more parking for automobiles. This only addresses the symptoms …

Applying Spring/Summer 2024 Fashion Trends To Modest Tween Fashion, Hannah Grace Shirley Apr 2024

Applying Spring/Summer 2024 Fashion Trends To Modest Tween Fashion, Hannah Grace Shirley

Liberty University Research Week

This research explores how current fashion trends can be adapted to fit the modesty values of Christian tween girls. Analyzing cultural beliefs, fashion trends, and the needs of Christian families with daughters will inform a small collection of age-appropriate, modest clothing for middle school girls. A review of literature, both Christian and secular, provides a picure of current influences on fashion. In today’s culture, relatively new ideas about homosexuality, transgenderism, marriage, and sex shape how many people, especially women, act and dress. Where clothing once emphasized femininity and modesty, most women’s clothing today emphasizes comfort or sexuality. These changes also …
