Design Of A Passive Intensity Modulation Device For Bolus Electron Conformal Therapy, Erin Leanne Chambers Aug 2016

Design Of A Passive Intensity Modulation Device For Bolus Electron Conformal Therapy, Erin Leanne Chambers

LSU Master's Theses

Purpose: To develop a process that can design an island block matrix that produces an intensity distribution (70-100%), which acceptably matches one planned for an intensity modulated (IM) bolus electron conformal therapy (ECT) patient. The intensity modulator concept is that electrons laterally scatter behind hexagonally-packed, small-diameter island blocks such that local intensity equals the fractional unblocked area.

Methods: A pencil beam algorithm (PBA) was used to calculate the modulated electron intensity created by varying diameter (d) of island blocks in a hexagonal array (separation r). Accuracy of the PBA model was assessed by comparing with Monte Carlo (MC) calculations. PBA …

The objective of this research was to determine differences in carcass evaluation, yield, and meat quality from representative fresh domestic (FSD), frozen domestic (FZD), and frozen imported Australian (FIA) goat carcass sides (n=30 from each source). The U.S. carcasses were split into sides and the right side frozen and stored for 6 weeks. Left sides were fabricated into standardized primal cuts. After frozen storage, right sides and FIA carcasses were thawed for 3 days at 4°C. Three experiments were conducted on the carcass traits and meat yields, quality differences in leg cut, and differences in loin and racks across freezing …

Role Of Histone H4 Mutations In Dna Repair Pathways, Sheikh Arafatur Rahman Jan 2016

Role Of Histone H4 Mutations In Dna Repair Pathways, Sheikh Arafatur Rahman

LSU Master's Theses

Histone H3K79 methylation has been shown to play roles in different DNA repair pathways. Histone H4 residues serine 64 to threonine 80 surround histone H3K79 residue. We have analyzed the effect of the mutations of the residues on UV sensitivity, H3K79 methylation, nucleotide excision repair, chromatin state and homologous recombination. We found that mutation of the residues 64 to 72 cause resistance to killing by UV whereas mutation of the residues 73 to 80 cause sensitivity to killing by UV compared to wild type. In general, we found that the mutations make nucleotide excision repair more proficient at the constitutively …

The Development Of A Reduced Glycemic Load/High Fiber Pasta Using Pulses, Christopher Ringuette Jan 2016

The Development Of A Reduced Glycemic Load/High Fiber Pasta Using Pulses, Christopher Ringuette

LSU Master's Theses

The use of beans in the human diet provides an excellent source of dietary fiber and has potential for lowering glycemic load. Prepared meals with high levels of dietary fiber and low glycemic loads were found to be rare in a market survey of nine stores with various price points in the greater Baton Rouge area. The majority of the prepared meals found fell into low or medium fiber categories with medium to high glycemic loads. This indicates a need to increase the fiber level and decrease the glycemic load in popular foods. The purpose of this research is to …

Lessons from the post-Katrina planning processes urges for better communication tool that invites broader conversation while providing more direct physical outcome from the process. Tactical urbanism is introduced to the city and the discipline of landscape architecture in order to provide a fresh solution to the communication by changing the speech between the authority figure and the residents into a more personal conversation with an invitation through on-site installation. At the same time, it is a …

Modeling Churn And Annular Flow Regimes In Vertical And Near-Vertical Pipes With Small And Large Diameters, Erika Viana Pagan Jan 2016

Modeling Churn And Annular Flow Regimes In Vertical And Near-Vertical Pipes With Small And Large Diameters, Erika Viana Pagan

LSU Master's Theses

This thesis presents an improved model for gas-liquid two-phase flow in churn and annular flow regimes for small- and large-diameter in vertical and near-vertical pipes. This new model assumes that a net liquid film moves upward along the pipe wall and gas phase moves upward, occupying the majority of the central part of the pipes, and forming a gas core, in both flow regimes. The model is validated using field and laboratory experimental data from several different studies from the literature, in terms of pressure along the wellbore or bottomhole pressure for field conditions (for high-pressure flows in long pipes, …

Feeding Ecology Of Red Snapper And Greater Amberjack At Standing Platforms In The Northern Gulf Of Mexico: Disentangling The Effects Of Artificial Light, Kristin Leanne Foss Jan 2016

Feeding Ecology Of Red Snapper And Greater Amberjack At Standing Platforms In The Northern Gulf Of Mexico: Disentangling The Effects Of Artificial Light, Kristin Leanne Foss

LSU Master's Theses

Approximately 2,300 petroleum platforms are currently operating in the Gulf of Mexico (GOM), and are estimated to provide an additional 4 to 12 km2 of artificial reef habitat. The ecological role of platforms has often been overlooked and little is known about the effect of artificial light from the active platforms on surrounding fish communities. This is the first study to address the potential impacts of artificial light on the trophic ecology of fish communities surrounding offshore platforms through gut content (GCA) and stable isotope (SIA) analyses. Red snapper (Lutjanus campechanus) were collected quarterly from February 2014 to November 2015 …

Spatiotemporal Distribution Of The Himalayan Leucogranite: Implications For Mountain-Building As A Function Of Indian Slab Dynamics, Hongcheng Guo Jan 2016

Spatiotemporal Distribution Of The Himalayan Leucogranite: Implications For Mountain-Building As A Function Of Indian Slab Dynamics, Hongcheng Guo

LSU Master's Theses

The Himalayan orogen, as a natural laboratory for continental collision, has attracted intense research attention for decades. However, the question of how the orogen was built is still debated, and potential answers are few when considering how and why along-strike variations of the mountain-building processes occurred. Various tectonic models have been proposed to explain the kinematics of the mountain-building. These models include two dimensional models, such as wedge extrusion (Burchfiel and Royden, 1985; Grujic et al., 1996; Kohn, 2008), channel flow coupled to focused denudation (Beaumont et al., 2001; Hodges et al., 2001), tectonic wedging (Yin, 2006; Webb et al., …

Phonological Encoding Of Medial Vowels In Adults Who Stutter, Allison Elizabeth Jacobs Jan 2016

Phonological Encoding Of Medial Vowels In Adults Who Stutter, Allison Elizabeth Jacobs

LSU Master's Theses

Previous data suggest the metrical properties of a word may influence the time course of phonological encoding, particularly in adults who stutter. The purpose of the present study is to examine phonological and metrical encoding skills in fluent and non-fluent adults, in particular the medial stress-bearing vowel. Investigators used a silent phoneme monitoring paradigm to assess reaction times for all phonemes within nonword CVCCVC stimuli. This paradigm required participants to manually identify target phonemes within a nonword to further isolate the level of phonological encoding from other processes. Eight participants were exposed to stimuli with initial-stress, and eight participants were …

Reactivity Of Iron-Sulfur Proteins With Nitric Oxide, Md Julkernine Julfiker Jan 2016

Reactivity Of Iron-Sulfur Proteins With Nitric Oxide, Md Julkernine Julfiker

LSU Master's Theses

Iron-sulfur ([Fe-S]) proteins are widely distributed in the biological systems. These proteins are involved in diverse fundamental life processes such as photosynthesis, respiration, ribosome biogenesis, DNA synthesis, and repair. Dysfunction of these proteins or their biogenesis has been implicated in causing cardiovascular diseases, neurodegenerative diseases, and various cancers. Iron-sulfur proteins are highly sensitive to nitric oxide (NO) and readily form dinitrosyl iron complexes (DNICs) upon exposure. Restoration of the iron-sulfur cluster in the NO-modified protein requires a two-step repair process. The first step is to remove DNICs from proteins. The second step is to re-assemble the iron-sulfur cluster in proteins. …

Calibration Of Resistance Factors Needed In The Lrfd Design Of Drilled Shafts, Alicia Rae Fortier Jan 2016

Calibration Of Resistance Factors Needed In The Lrfd Design Of Drilled Shafts, Alicia Rae Fortier

LSU Master's Theses

This report presents the reliability-based analysis of the calibration of resistance factors for the Load and Resistance Factor Design (LRFD) of axially loaded drilled shafts. AASHTO’s 2012 LRFD Bridge Design Specifications recommends various resistance factors for the design of deep foundations; however, since these values are not specific to any one region, they are very conservative. For Louisiana or Mississippi, the adoption of such recommended resistance factors could substantially increase foundation sizes. Therefore, it is necessary to develop a database of drilled shaft load tests performed in the regions of Louisiana, Mississippi, and surrounding states with similar soil conditions. Sixty-nine …

Biogeography And Population Genetics On Sulawesi, Indonesia: Unrecognized Diversity In The Shrew Crocidura Elongata, Ryan Andrew Eldridge Jan 2016

Biogeography And Population Genetics On Sulawesi, Indonesia: Unrecognized Diversity In The Shrew Crocidura Elongata, Ryan Andrew Eldridge

LSU Master's Theses

In view of its mountainous terrain, peninsular shape, and status as an agglomeration of formerly separate landmasses, the island of Sulawesi, Indonesia, presents a fertile opportunity for examining biogeographical processes. Previous work on Sulawesi primates and amphibians suggested the existence of distinct areas of endemism (AoEs), but the relevance of these zones to a broader set of taxa has not been widely investigated, nor the reasons for their existence fully explored. Here, we use population genetic analyses of the endemic Sulawesi shrew, Crocidura elongata, to assess biogeographical partitioning according to the putative AoEs. We uncover significant cryptic diversity within C. …

Geographic Distribution And Severity Of Strobilurin Fungicide Resistance Among Rhizoctonia Solani On Rice In Southwestern Louisiana, Allysson Gayle Lunos Jan 2016

Geographic Distribution And Severity Of Strobilurin Fungicide Resistance Among Rhizoctonia Solani On Rice In Southwestern Louisiana, Allysson Gayle Lunos

LSU Master's Theses

Strobilurin fungicide resistance threatens rice production in southwestern Louisiana. Strobilurins are the often relied upon method of managing sheath blight development due to the lack of strong genetic resistance to this disease in the currently available rice germplasm. However, isolates of Rhizoctonia solani AG 1-IA causing sheath blight were reported resistant to azoxystrobin near Mowata, LA in 2011. To determine the geographic distribution and severity of azoxystrobin resistance, 40 commercial rice fields in southwestern Louisiana were sampled for isolates of R. solani. Sensitivity to pyraclostrobin and trifloxystrobin was also assessed to investigate cross-resistance. A genetic test was used to …

Optimal Configuration Of Inspection And Rework Stations In A Multistage Flexible Flowline, Md. Shahriar Jahan Hossain Jan 2016

Optimal Configuration Of Inspection And Rework Stations In A Multistage Flexible Flowline, Md. Shahriar Jahan Hossain

LSU Master's Theses

Inspection and rework are two important issues of quality control. In this research, an N-stage flowline is considered to make decisions on these two issues. When defective items are detected at the inspection station the items are either scrapped or reworked. A reworkable item may be repaired at the regular defect-creating workstation or at a dedicated off-line rework station. Two problems (end-of-line and multistage inspections) are considered here to deal with this situation. The end-of-line inspection (ELI) problem considers an inspection station located at the end of the line while the multistage inspection (MSI) problem deals with multiple in-line inspection …

A Study Of Fpga Resource Utilization For Pipelined Windowed Image Computations, Aswin Vijaya Varma Jan 2016

A Study Of Fpga Resource Utilization For Pipelined Windowed Image Computations, Aswin Vijaya Varma

LSU Master's Theses

In image processing operations, each pixel is often treated independently and operated upon by using values of other pixels in the neighborhood. These operations are often called windowed image computations (or neighborhood operations). In this thesis, we examine the implementation of a windowed computation pipeline in an FPGA-based environment. Typically, the image is generated outside the FPGA environment (such as through a camera) and the result of the windowed computation is consumed outside the FPGA environment (for example, in a screen for display or an engine for higher level analysis). The image is typically large (over a million pixels 1000×1000 …

The Effects Of Carbon Nanotubes On Cells In A Synthetic Oxygen Carrier Enriched Alginate Scaffold, Joshua Paul Tate Jan 2016

The Effects Of Carbon Nanotubes On Cells In A Synthetic Oxygen Carrier Enriched Alginate Scaffold, Joshua Paul Tate

LSU Master's Theses

Abstract Huge progress has been made in the development of three dimensionally printed tissue structures. With the use of cells, three dimensional printers, and CAD drawing software, donor identical structures can be fabricated. However, cell scaffolds currently lack significant mechanical integrity which can result in reduced cellular survival, attachment, and nutrient delivery. For this reason, multiple strategies have been developed to increase and improve mechanical stability within engineered constructs without having to sacrifice cell viability. The hypothesis of this paper was that incorporating Perfluorotributylamine (PFTBA), a greenhouse gas, with single walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNT), a allotrope of carbon with a …

Results also indicated a significant difference in attitudes toward …

Metric Variation In The Human Sacrum: Costal Process Length Among Black And White South Africans, Christy Rose Wayne Jan 2016

Metric Variation In The Human Sacrum: Costal Process Length Among Black And White South Africans, Christy Rose Wayne

LSU Master's Theses

Considerable attention has been given to the measureable differences that exist between different human populations in the size and shape of the pelvis, with Africans having a narrower pelvis than Europeans. By collecting data on sacral breadth from a South African skeletal population, this study (1) tests the hypothesis that African blacks possess a narrower sacrum, and by inference pelvis, than whites and (2) considers whether the size variation between blacks and whites is due to nutritional, historical and social differences, to a genetic basis related to climatic adaptation, or to both. White South Africans were found to possess a …

Mass Incarceration By Design: The Impacts Of Urban Renewal And Landscape Architecture's Absence On The Prison Industrial Complex And The Use Of Landscape Architecture As An Antidote To Mass Incarceration, Abigail P. Phillips Jan 2016

Mass Incarceration By Design: The Impacts Of Urban Renewal And Landscape Architecture's Absence On The Prison Industrial Complex And The Use Of Landscape Architecture As An Antidote To Mass Incarceration, Abigail P. Phillips

LSU Master's Theses

The work of landscape architects has both positive and negative social impacts and landscape architects can strive to intentionally design for positive social impact. This paper utilizes mass incarceration as a lens for discussing the social impact of landscape architecture. The crossroads of mass incarceration and design offer a unique opportunity for Landscape Architects to examine the impact of many urban renewal efforts on marginalized communities, the benefits of landscape architectural involvement in prison design, and the use of design as protest against inhumane structures. This paper is separated into three sections, one detailing the history of social justice and …

Effect Of Bitterness Blockers In Partial And Complete Replacement Of Sodium Chloride With Potassium Chloride On The Physicochemical And Sensory Characteristics Of Marinated Chicken Breast Fillets, Ana Gabriela Ocampo Arriaga

LSU Master's Theses

High sodium intake has negative health implications on hypertension and cardiovascular diseases. Brines used in chicken marination are composed of salt (NaCl), phosphates and seasonings. Potassium chloride (KCl) is the most common sodium replacer but its use is typically limited to less than 50% substitution due to its undesirable bitterness and metallic aftertaste. The objective of this study was to determine the effect of 5’ adenosine monophosphate (AMP) and glycine, as bitterness blockers, on physicochemical, sensory characteristics and purchase intent of sodium reduced chicken breast fillets. Chicken breast was injected with a 20% pick-up solution. Salt treatments (trts) were 50, …

Flood Damage And Shutdown Times For Industrial Process Facilities, Matthew Lane Flynn Jan 2016

Flood Damage And Shutdown Times For Industrial Process Facilities, Matthew Lane Flynn

LSU Master's Theses

The vulnerability of the Gulf Coast to inundation poses a real threat to both national security and the regional economy due to the concentration of the nation’s energy infrastructure throughout the waterways of the southeastern United States’ waterways. Mitigation efforts thus far have been qualitative and fail to provide raw, quantitative data to aid in the successful management of flooding liabilities. This paper proposes a novel approach to analyzing infrastructure susceptibility by means of a component-based approach to consequences posed by water-borne incursions. Systems are simplified to collections of components, each with a lowest-member elevation, thereby identifying the benchmark for …

Relative Resistance To Breaking Of Pinus Taeda L. And Pinus Palustris, Cory Glenn Garms Jan 2016

Relative Resistance To Breaking Of Pinus Taeda L. And Pinus Palustris, Cory Glenn Garms

LSU Master's Theses

Patterns from hurricane damage give an indication that longleaf pine (Pinus palustris) is more windfirm than loblolly pine (Pinus taeda). Tree windfirmess has been attributed to many factors including species and material properties like wood strength and stiffness. Because longleaf pine wood is stronger and stiffer than loblolly pine wood, this study used static winching methodology to see if these properties account for differences in windfirmness by measuring bending force required to break stems (MMAX). Stress-strain diagrams were constructed for pulled trees to explore how they behave under increasing loads. Based on these diagrams, it appears that living trees can …

Evaluation Of Alkaline- And Fungal-Assisted Wet Storage Of Energycane Bagasse, Jing Cao Jan 2016

Evaluation Of Alkaline- And Fungal-Assisted Wet Storage Of Energycane Bagasse, Jing Cao

LSU Master's Theses

Lignocellulosic biomass is a promising renewable resource for the production of biofuels and biochemicals. Energycane is considered a lignocellulosic biomass characterized by its high fiber content and cold tolerance. It can be planted on marginal land and does not need to compete with the food supply. Wet storage in combination with sodium hydroxide (NaOH) or white-rot fungi was applied to energycane bagasse to preserve the lignocellulosic polymeric sugars (cellulose and hemicellulose) during short-term storage (60 days) and to make them accessible for conversion into biofuels and biochemicals. Alkaline-assisted wet storage was successful in preserving the biomass by minimizing microbial degradation, …

Many small social aid organizations could benefit from collaborating with other organizations on common causes, but may not have the necessary social relationships. We present a framework for a recommender system for the Louisiana Poverty Initiative that identifies member organizations with common causes and aims to forge connections between these organizations. Our framework employs a combination of graph and text analyses of the organizations' Facebook pages. We use NodeXL, a plugin to Microsoft Excel, to download the Facebook graph and to interface with SNAP, the Stanford Network Analysis Platform, for calculating network measurements. Our framework extends NodeXL with algorithms that …

From Ruins To Home The Exploration Of Shikumen’S Development, Xinye Zheng Jan 2016

From Ruins To Home The Exploration Of Shikumen’S Development, Xinye Zheng

LSU Master's Theses

The issue of Shikumen is the confliction between urban development and historical value preservation. And the historical value can be better understood with Chinese modern history behind, especially the concession part (an area ruled by foreign countries and don't have the independent rights on economy, politics and military (18, Li)). Because of the historic reason, the residents were made of three main streams, which were international stream, national stream and local movement. Those residences brought their culture into the concession and created a “melting pot”. This melting pot cultural phenomenon was shown in building design of Shikumen. However, with the …

Walter Max Lewy (1905 – 1995) was a Surrealist painter and graphic designer who worked in Brazil for most of his career. Born in Germany to a Jewish family, the artist was forced to flee Europe in the eve of the Second World War, finding a safe haven in the city of São Paulo. The city’s budding modern art scene provided solid ground for Lewy’s art to flourish. His achievements epitomize the global occurrence of Modernism, in its manifestations outside the traditional Western artistic centers of the world. This thesis is the first comprehensive analysis of Walter Lewy’s life and …

Perceptions Of Criminality: An Experiment On Race, Class, And Gender Stereotypes, Patricia Davis Jan 2016

Perceptions Of Criminality: An Experiment On Race, Class, And Gender Stereotypes, Patricia Davis

LSU Master's Theses

The study of perceptions of criminality is significant in sociology due to its sociopolitical implications for our criminal justice system. Race, class, and gender disparities in this system influence prejudices in the American public, which in turn allows the perpetuation of inequality. Using an intersectional approach, this research seeks to interpret how race, class, and gender intersect to create and shape perceptions of criminality. Conducting an experiment on approximately 500 undergraduate students at a southern university during the Spring 2015 semester, subjects are shown a series of photographs and asked to select who, out of the individuals depicted, they believe …

A Critical Examination Of The Rehearsal Frame Model, Allison Elise Carroll Jan 2016

A Critical Examination Of The Rehearsal Frame Model, Allison Elise Carroll

LSU Master's Theses

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the practical adequacy of Duke’s (1994) rehearsal frame model as a “middle ground” perspective sequential outline of rehearsal events that lead to positive musical change. Observation and video recording of three accomplished high school band directors’ rehearsals generated data that allowed for a comparison between the model and actual practice. Results suggested that all parts of the original model need not be present, nor must they occur in the originally stated order for rehearsal frames to take place and direct students toward positive musical change. An amended model of the rehearsal frame …
