George Price Boyce And The Consolation Of Landscape, Julia Chandler L'Enfant Oct 1991

George Price Boyce And The Consolation Of Landscape, Julia Chandler L'Enfant

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

George Price Boyce (1826-1897) is little known today except by his diaries, which chronicle his association with the Pre-Raphaelite circle in London from 1851 to 1875. Yet in his own day Boyce was widely admired for his watercolor landscapes, and after 1864 was a leading member of the select Royal Water-Colour Society. His landscapes were thought to have a special, even eccentric quality, particularly his work from about 1859 to 1870, generally acknowledged to be his best.

Critics and art historians who take note of Boyce today almost always link him with the Pre-Raphaelite movement. This thesis, however, seeks to …

Comparative Ontogeny Of Cranial Ossification In The Spotted Salamander, Ambystoma Maculatum, And The Tailed Frog, Ascaphus Truei, Michael Keith Moore Jul 1991

Comparative Ontogeny Of Cranial Ossification In The Spotted Salamander, Ambystoma Maculatum, And The Tailed Frog, Ascaphus Truei, Michael Keith Moore

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The ontogenetic sequence of ossification of the cranium, including descriptions of the development of individual elements, from initial appearance of bone through adulthood, is described for two species of amphibian: the Spotted Salamander, Ambystoma maculatum, and the Tailed Frog, Ascaphus truei. This study is based on cleared-and-stained developmental series of 269 specimens of Ambystoma and 325 of Ascaphus. Nine stages of cranial development are defined for Ambystoma maculatum. By metamorphosis, all bones of the skull of Ambystoma except the articular have begun to ossify. The ossification sequence of Ambystoma shows little interindividual variation; only 6 specimens do not follow the …

Eruption Dynamics And Petrology Of The Most Recent Eruptions Of Nevado Del Ruiz Volcano, Colombia, South America, Richard Henry Young Jun 1991

Eruption Dynamics And Petrology Of The Most Recent Eruptions Of Nevado Del Ruiz Volcano, Colombia, South America, Richard Henry Young

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Field measurements and petrographic analyses of pumices from the most recent tephra deposits of Nevado del Ruiz volcano provide a context in which to view the disastrous eruption of 13 November, 1985 (R0). The pumices are all crystal-rich, two-pyroxene andesites to dacites with whole rock SiO2 contents of 62 - 66 wt.%, and magma water contents estimated to be between 1 - 4 wt.%. The 1985 tephra has greater petrologic diversity than earlier deposits which may be related to an input of a hotter, more basic magma into the Ruiz system, as suggested by xenocrystic olivine which is most …

A New Construction Of Subgroups Inducing Isomorphic Representations., Patricia Wright Beaulieu Jan 1991

A New Construction Of Subgroups Inducing Isomorphic Representations., Patricia Wright Beaulieu

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This dissertation provides a method to construct infinite families of triples ($H\sb{i},H\sbsp{i}{\prime},G\sb{i}$) consisting of two non-conjugate subgroups $H\sb{i}$ and $H\sbsp{i}{\prime}$ of a finite group $G\sb{i}$ whose trivial representations induce isomorphic representations of $G\sb{i}$. Such triples are important in number theory, differential geometry, and group theory.

Distribution And Management Of And Soybean Resistance To Calonectria Crotalariae, The Causal Pathogen Of Red Crown Rot Of Soybean., Dana Kent Berner Jan 1991

Distribution And Management Of And Soybean Resistance To Calonectria Crotalariae, The Causal Pathogen Of Red Crown Rot Of Soybean., Dana Kent Berner

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The national, local, and in-field distribution of Calonectria crotalariae (Loos) Bell and Sobers, as reflected in the distribution of Cylindrocladium black rot (CBR) of peanut, red crown rot (RCR) of soybean and microsclerotia densities in soil, respectively, are described. The current distribution of RCR in Louisiana is probably due to the introduction of the pathogen on indigo (Indigofera tinctoria (L.)) and to subsequent movement by man. RCR has been reported in 17 Louisiana parishes. In field studies, delayed soybean planting was efficacious in reducing RCR incidence. Effects of delayed planting on yield were maturity group dependent and confounded with RCR …

Partial Sequence And Characterization Of A Growth Hormone Gene Of The Red Drum (Sciaenops Ocellatus)., Carol Marie Dorworth Jan 1991

Partial Sequence And Characterization Of A Growth Hormone Gene Of The Red Drum (Sciaenops Ocellatus)., Carol Marie Dorworth

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

A growth hormone (GH) gene was isolated from nuclear DNA of the red drum (Sciaenops ocellatus). Synthetic oligonucleotides were synthesized based on published cDNA sequences of other perciform fishes. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) methodology was employed to amplify a nucleotide sequence extending from the 5$\sp\prime$ end of intron I to 15 bases upstream of the 3$\sp\prime$ end of exon VI of the GH gene. Amplified DNA was cloned into a phagemid sequencing vector. Clones were sequenced. Computer analysis of sequence data was used to determine the internal gene arrangement of exons and introns. Homologies of the nucleotide and deduced amino …

Perceptions Of Performance Appraisal By Cooperative Extension Service Agents In Selected Southern States., William L. Davis Jan 1991

Perceptions Of Performance Appraisal By Cooperative Extension Service Agents In Selected Southern States., William L. Davis

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Appraising the performance of employees is a necessary and vital process in the management of organizations. In the Cooperative Extension System, performance appraisal concerns all employees and influences work, motivation, and ultimately educational program impacts. Perceptions of the present and ideal performance appraisal process were obtained from 558 county agents in six selected southern states. The study focused on agent perceptions of the process, as currently followed and as a desired ideal, to see if there were perceptual differences, and to see if perceptions were influenced by personal characteristics, work characteristics and features of the process itself. The performance appraisal …

Genetics Of Resistance To Preharvest Aflatoxin Accumulation In Maize Containing The Lfy Gene., Daniel Preston Gorman Jan 1991

Genetics Of Resistance To Preharvest Aflatoxin Accumulation In Maize Containing The Lfy Gene., Daniel Preston Gorman

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Preharvest infection of maize (Zea mays L.) grain by Aspergillus flavus Link ex Fries and subsequent aflatoxin contamination is a serious problem, especially in the southeastern USA. Studies on the genetics of resistance to aflatoxin contamination in maize are quite limited, but a better understanding of this aspect is needed for developing resistant germplasm. The objective of the first field study was to determine the genetics of resistance to aflatoxin contamination in maize possessing the leafy (Lfy) gene. Seven Lfy synthetic genotypes were crossed in a diallel fashion, and the resulting 21 single crosses were evaluated for aflatoxin contamination in …

A Comparison Of Models Of Parole Outcome., Larry Allen Gould Jan 1991

A Comparison Of Models Of Parole Outcome., Larry Allen Gould

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The focus of this dissertation is on the criteria which parole boards use as the basis for their decision to release an offender on to parole. The literature strongly suggests that there are some objective measures of dangerousness on parole, such as the Salient Factor Score; however, the literature also indicates that parole boards use a great deal of subjective evaluation in making their decisions. Many of the subjective concepts used by parole boards can be measured objectively through a grounding in criminological theory. A model of parole outcome prediction which measures objectively several of the previously subjective variables, including …

Quantitation Of Phenolic Acids And Effect Of Controlled Atmosphere Storage On Peach Fruit Quality., Ahmed Fathallah El-Shiekh Jan 1991

Quantitation Of Phenolic Acids And Effect Of Controlled Atmosphere Storage On Peach Fruit Quality., Ahmed Fathallah El-Shiekh

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Total and individual phenolic acids in firm-ripe fruit of ten different peach (Prunus persica Batsch.) genotypes were analyzed by spectrophotometry and high performance liquid schrmoatography (HPLC) and related to internal browning potential. A comparison of phenolic acid separation was made between five different column types. A Lichrosorb RP-18 column provided the best separation of the major phenolic acids in peach fruit mesocarp tissue. Quinic was the predominant phenolic acid, followed in concentration by gentisic, catechin, chlorogenic, and syringic acids. Quantities differed between genotypes. The genotypes with the highest internal browning potential contained the highest concentration of chlorogenic acid, gentisic acid, …

Fluorescence Studies Of Phosphofructokinase From Bacillus Stearothermophilus., Soon-Jong Kim Jan 1991

Fluorescence Studies Of Phosphofructokinase From Bacillus Stearothermophilus., Soon-Jong Kim

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Phosphofructokinase catalyzes the phosphorylation of $\beta$-fructose 6-phosphate (Fru-6-P) to $\beta$-fructose 1,6-bisphosphate. The first part of this dissertation shows that phosphofructokinase from Bacillus stearothermophilus (Bs-PFK) is a tetramer in the region pH 4.5-9.5 unlike the enzymes from mammalian sources, which exhibit association-dissociation reactions. Circular dichroism, steady-state fluorescence, and static and dynamic light scattering were used to study the conformational properties of the enzyme. Inactivation of the enzyme below pH 7.0 is not due to dissociation of the tetramer to dimers or monomers. In the second part, the fluorescence of the lone tryptophan was investigated by steady-state and time-resolved techniques. The decay …

Arcadia Disjointed: Confrontations With Texts, Polemical, Utopian, And Picaresque., Deborah Ann Jacobs Jan 1991

Arcadia Disjointed: Confrontations With Texts, Polemical, Utopian, And Picaresque., Deborah Ann Jacobs

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Beginning with the historical example provided by the extended text of the Popish Plot, that is, by the polemical press battle which raged during this major threat to Charles II's Restoration government, I identify what I term a narrator/narrative disjunction. The narrator/narrative disjunction occurs when the narrator or teller relates one story, while the narrative he or she relates suggests or strongly intimates that the narrator should be adjudged less than reliable. In the course of this exploration, I read several Tory polemical texts on the Popish Plot, including Dryden's Absalom and Achitophel, not as literary works, but rather as …

Taxonomy And Biostratigraphy Of Sabinian Palynomorphs From The Wilcox Group (Paleocene-Eocene Epochs) Of Southwestern Louisiana., William Andrew Gregory Jr Jan 1991

Taxonomy And Biostratigraphy Of Sabinian Palynomorphs From The Wilcox Group (Paleocene-Eocene Epochs) Of Southwestern Louisiana., William Andrew Gregory Jr

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Fifty conventional core samples from the Ragley Lumber #D1 well located in Allen Parish Louisiana (Sec 29, T5S, R7w) were analyzed for palynomorphs. The sediment was deposited during the Sabinian Provincial Stage (upper Paleocene-lower Eocene) in a marine environment as evidenced by the presence of in situ dinocysts and acritarchs in every sample. Terrigenous diversity of 129 taxa is comparable with marine palynomorph diversity of 46 taxa. Single sample diversity among the terrigenous palynomorph component (23-56 taxa) is comparable with single sample marine palynomorph diversity of 7-25 taxa. High terrigenous diversity intervals possibly indicate sourcing from multiple onshore environments or …

The Effect Of Co-Culture Systems From Non-Reproductive Origins On The Development Of Superovulated And In Vitro Fertilized Bovine Embryos., Hak-Nam Kim

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The objective of this experiment was to compare in vitro development of bovine embryos obtained from superovulation and in vitro fertilization (IVF) in two unique monolayer co-culture systems, bovine fetal spleen cell monolayers (BFS) and chick embryo fibroblast monolayers (CEF). To test the possible harmful effects of these co-culture systems, 225 murine morula-stage embryos were cultured for 72 hours with these monolayers. The percentage of hatched embryos was 62.7% in culture medium alone, 76% in BFS and 57.3% in CEF. BFS and CEF did not induce any detectable harmful effect on these developing murine embryos. When 60 transferable morula-stage bovine …

The purpose of the study was to obtain data on the intervention planning processes engaged in by prereferral intervention teams, primarily, through a focus on the verbal processes of teacher and committee team member interactions. Teacher and committee participation in the prereferral intervention planning process was operationalized in terms of the frequency of teacher and committee verbal interactions, in terms of numbers of questions, responses, and initiated comments made by each, as well as teacher and committee speaking time. Results of analysis of these data revealed that teachers asked few questions and initiated relatively few comments in comparison with their …

Stereoelectronics Of Carboxylate-Imidazolium Hydrogen Bonds In Models Of The Aspartate-Histidine Couple In Serine Proteases., Nabeel Abdel Raouf Nabulsi Jan 1991

Stereoelectronics Of Carboxylate-Imidazolium Hydrogen Bonds In Models Of The Aspartate-Histidine Couple In Serine Proteases., Nabeel Abdel Raouf Nabulsi

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The geometry of the carboxylate-imidazolium hydrogen bond in the crystalline state and the effect of microenvironment are investigated in models of the aspartate-histidine (Asp-His) couple. Synthetic methods leading to the preparation of intramolecular models, possessing syn and anti-oriented hydrogen bonds, also are described. A single-pot procedure has been developed for converting phenoxyacetonitriles into their respective benzimidazole derivative in higher yields than the traditional two step procedure. An efficient single-pot procedure also has been developed for converting benzofuran to its acetylene derivative, 2-acetoxyphenylacetylene. This method involves in situ acetylation of the unstable phenol intermediate. Nine intermolecular imidazolium-benzoate couples have been prepared …

Acoustic Topology Of Infant Proto-Syllables., James Robert Piroli Jan 1991

Acoustic Topology Of Infant Proto-Syllables., James Robert Piroli

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

A corpus of CV-like proto-syllables was obtained from the archival recordings of three first-born infants, which were made in conjunction with earlier research on the acoustic and interactive aspects of infant language acquisition. Tokens were limited to proto-syllables with perceptual evidence of stop-like or glide-like qualities and an identifiable vowel. Following A/D sampling, measures of developmental change were made including F1/F2 steady states, transition durations, CV durations, maximum F2 velocities, F2 onset, fundamental frequency, shimmer, time-to-peak amplitude velocity, and time-to-peak F2 velocity within the transition. Contrary to expectations, the orderliness of the infant protosyllables was remarkable with few acoustic events …

From Image To Identity: The Search For Authenticity In The Early Modernist Drama Of Maxwell Anderson, John Millington Synge, Federico Garcia Lorca And D. H. Lawrence., Janice Maria Oliver Jan 1991

From Image To Identity: The Search For Authenticity In The Early Modernist Drama Of Maxwell Anderson, John Millington Synge, Federico Garcia Lorca And D. H. Lawrence., Janice Maria Oliver

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Working roughly from the last decades of the nineteenth century into the first quarter of the twentieth, early modernist playwrights wrote in times which were dominated by realism, but when many still looked to poetic forms for expression. They shared artistic space with realist practitioners like Ibsen and Shaw on the one hand and poetic dramatists like Yeats and Eliot on the other. Interested in dramatizing the conflict between the private and the public selves, they faced a central problem of creating a form and attendant style that could bridge the gap between the individual and her/his environment, thus harmonizing …

A New Condition For Arithmetic Equivalence., Donna Joy Stuart Jan 1991

A New Condition For Arithmetic Equivalence., Donna Joy Stuart

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Two algebraic number fields K, K$\sp\prime$ are said to be arithmetically equivalent if every prime number p has the same splitting type in K as in K$\sp\prime$. Many equivalent formulations of arithmetic equivalence are known. The best-known of these is: K and K$\sp\prime$ are arithmetically equivalent if and only if their Dedekind zeta functions coincide. This dissertation provides a surprising new formulation: K and K$\sp\prime$ are arithmetically equivalent if and only if for all prime numbers p, outside a given set of density zero, the number $g\sb K (p)$ of prime factors of p in K is equal to the …

Measurement Of Galactic Cosmic Ray Proton And Helium Spectra During The 1987 Solar Minimum., Eun-Suk Seo Jan 1991

Measurement Of Galactic Cosmic Ray Proton And Helium Spectra During The 1987 Solar Minimum., Eun-Suk Seo

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The differential cosmic ray proton and helium spectra have been measured during the 1987 solar minimum using a balloon-borne superconducting magnetic spectrometer launched from Prince Albert, Canada. The changing geomagnetic cutoff along the balloon trajectory was observed in the low energy proton data to be about 25% below the nominal calculated values. The measured particle fluxes were approximately equal to the highest fluxes observed at the previous solar minimum in 1977. Above 10 GV the observed spectra are represented by a power law in rigidity with spectral indices of 2.74 $\pm$ 0.02 for protons and 2.68 $\pm$ 0.03 for helium. …

The Spectroscopy Of Neutral And Ionic Forms Of Triphenylformazan Derivatives., Elizabeth Wilhite Jan 1991

The Spectroscopy Of Neutral And Ionic Forms Of Triphenylformazan Derivatives., Elizabeth Wilhite

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The spectroscopic characteristics of neutral, protonated and deprotonated triphenylformazans were investigated by means of visible absorption and $\sp1$H NMR spectroscopies. Studies of the effect of solvents and substituents on the absorption spectra of the neutral and ionic formazans were conducted. CNDO/S calculations for a series of formazans were performed to assign the electronic transitions observed in the absorption spectra of triphenylformazan. The formazan system was found to be highly delocalized and not tautomeric as had been reported. The visible transition of the U (trans-syn) form of triphenylformazan was found to arise from orbitals localized on the formazan system. The near …

Dynamic Random Coefficient Regression Model For Electricity Demand: The Small Sample Case., Susan Mu-Lan Zee Jan 1991

Dynamic Random Coefficient Regression Model For Electricity Demand: The Small Sample Case., Susan Mu-Lan Zee

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This paper develops a dynamic random coefficient regression model for electricity demand. Six estimation procedures are proposed for the model. An empirical study of the comparative performance of these six estimators is presented. In addition, a Monte Carlo simulation study is reported where we examine the small sample properties of the distributions of the coefficients and observe the behavior of the estimators as the sample size increases.

Poly(Arylene Ether Sulfones): Synthesis, Modifications And Applications., Marietta Navarro Aniano-Ilao Jan 1991

Poly(Arylene Ether Sulfones): Synthesis, Modifications And Applications., Marietta Navarro Aniano-Ilao

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Poly(arylene ether sulfones) were synthesized by aromatic nucleophilic polymerization of the monomers; 4,4$\sp\prime$-biphenol, 4-chlorophenyl sulfone, hydroquinone, and tert-butylhydroquinone. Different conditions of temperature and solvent systems were used to determine the best synthetic approaches for the preparation of poly-(4,4$\sp\prime$-biphenol/4-chlorophenyl sulfone) (1:1), poly-(4-4$\sp\prime$-biphenol/4-chlorophenyl sulfone/hydroquinone) (1:2:1), and poly (4-4$\sp\prime$-biphenol/4-chlorophenyl sulfone/tert-butylhydroquinone) (1:2:1). The use of aprotic high boiling solvent mixtures of N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP), and N-cyclohexyl-2-pyrrolidone (CHP), facilitated the formation of polymers with structures which can easily be controlled by varying the ratio of monomers, and by varying the concentration of reactants. The polymers were functionalized and modified by silylation, amination and aminomethylation. Directed silylation …

An Ethnographic Study Of Kindergarten Children's Literacy Skills And Stress-Related Behaviors Before And After Teacher Demonstration., Nancy Crossland Weems Jan 1991

An Ethnographic Study Of Kindergarten Children's Literacy Skills And Stress-Related Behaviors Before And After Teacher Demonstration., Nancy Crossland Weems

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The purpose of this ethnographic research was to study kindergarten students' literacy skills and stress-related behaviors and a teacher's instructional behavior before and after demonstrations in appropriate bookreading strategies. A lower socio-economic setting, which previously had been identified by Burts, Hart, Charlesworth, and Kirk (1990a) as a developmentally inappropriate instructional environment, was selected for observation as one which might be amenable to change. The demonstrations included bookreading strategies that the kindergarten teacher could implement to promote the acquisition of literacy in ways that do not contribute to stress. Ethnographic data collection consisted of three months of participant observation in one …

Toward A Phenomenology Of Curriculum: The Work Of Max Van Manen And T. Tetsuo Aoki., Robert Kent Brown Jan 1991

Toward A Phenomenology Of Curriculum: The Work Of Max Van Manen And T. Tetsuo Aoki., Robert Kent Brown

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

In this study an attempt was made at understanding contemporary thought and application of phenomenological research to the field of curriculum and instruction. More specifically, it sought to identify a place and need for a methodology in curriculum research that exposes and clarifies the dynamics of pedagogy as a result of investigating the existential/ontological nature of pedagogical activity. In accomplishing this, the works of two major North American phenomenological curriculum theorists, T. Tetsuo Aoki and Max van Manen were examined. The work of these two significant contemporary curriculum theorists was used due to the international recognition their seminal phenomenologically oriented …

The Effect Of Work And Non-Work Influences Upon The Relationships Between Role Stress And Selected Work Outcomes., James Sanders Boles Jan 1991

The Effect Of Work And Non-Work Influences Upon The Relationships Between Role Stress And Selected Work Outcomes., James Sanders Boles

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This study examined the importance of two constructs--work relationships and job/home conflict--as potential mediators/moderators of the linkage between role conflict and role ambiguity with a variety of work outcomes in a salesforce setting. These outcomes include: sales performance, job satisfaction, emotional burnout, and propensity to leave. Results indicate that the relationships between these outcomes and the role variables are often mediated rather than direct. Implications for both researchers and practitioners are developed as well as a future research agenda.

The In-Store Retail Experience: A C-E-V Approach To Consumer Shopping Activity., Barry James Babin Jan 1991

The In-Store Retail Experience: A C-E-V Approach To Consumer Shopping Activity., Barry James Babin

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Environmental psychology has been increasingly applied to the study of consumer patronage behavior. This study adapts a model based largely on environmental psychology and tests it empirically in an attempt to explain several aspects of in-store consumer behavior. In doing so, it goes beyond previous applications of environmental psychology by considering the effect of several antecedents of consumer emotions and by considering the consequences of varying retail experiences in terms of the personal shopping value they convey to a consumer. Prior to testing the model, previous research is reviewed to develop the relationships comprising the model. Put simply, various consumer …

Development Of An Advanced Thermospray Interfaced Hplc-Aas System For Speciation Studies Of Cadmium Species Excreted From Human Body Fluids: Interaction Between Metallothionein Cadmium And Zinc., Peter Ping Chang Jan 1991

Development Of An Advanced Thermospray Interfaced Hplc-Aas System For Speciation Studies Of Cadmium Species Excreted From Human Body Fluids: Interaction Between Metallothionein Cadmium And Zinc., Peter Ping Chang

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

A new technique has been developed to reveal different metal species at very low concentrations (lower ppb level) in human body fluids. Using this technique it was determined that urine contained many different species of cadmium and that perspiration contained many other species of cadmium. This indicated that there were two avenues for the elimination of cadmium from the body. Quantitative data showed that much more cadmium was eliminated through perspiration than urine and that the biological half life of cadmium in the body was less than 1.5 years--not 20-30 years as currently believed. Further, in vitro experiments showed that …

Remedial English Ten Years After: Former Basic Writers In The Workplace., Eleanor Agnew Jan 1991

Remedial English Ten Years After: Former Basic Writers In The Workplace., Eleanor Agnew

The purpose of this study was to find out whether writing skills were a handicap to job success for former basic writers who had graduated from college. A population of 197 former basic writers (FBW's) and 68 former strong writers (FSW's, used as a comparison) were surveyed and interviewed. Research questions included (1) What types of jobs do FBW's have, compared to FSW's, and how much do their feelings about writing affect their choices of major or job? (2) How much and how often do FBW's write at work compared to FSW's? (3) What forms of writing do FBW's do …

Social Networks And Linguistic Accommodation Of Mainland Chinese In An Urban American Chinese Community., Hong Chi Jan 1991

Social Networks And Linguistic Accommodation Of Mainland Chinese In An Urban American Chinese Community., Hong Chi

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The growing number of immigrants from both Taiwan and Mainland China have brought speakers of different Mandarin varieties into contact in an American context. In the Chinese community in Los Angeles, Mainland Putonghua speakers are found to accommodate their language to the local Taiwan Mandarin speakers. Social network analysis, a model oriented toward the individual, is adapted here for analyzing this linguistic situation. The conversation of 35 informants was recorded within a naturally occurring context and their social network scores were compared with their scores for nine linguistic variables selected for this study. It was found that the accommodation process …
