A Comparison Of Channel Morphology, Marsh Elevation, And Biological Processes In Natural And Dredged Tidal Salt Marshes In Louisiana, Jennifer S. Spicer Jan 2007

A Comparison Of Channel Morphology, Marsh Elevation, And Biological Processes In Natural And Dredged Tidal Salt Marshes In Louisiana, Jennifer S. Spicer

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Channel networks in tidal marshes serve as conduits for the exchange of water between the estuary and the marsh surface and form the spatial structure that regulates the flow of organisms, materials, and energy throughout the marsh system. Canal dredging creates channels with distinct linear shapes, and the artificial levee created from the dredged material creates ‘spoil banks’ along either side of the channel edge. Differences in morphology and adjacent marsh surface elevation between natural and dredged channel systems have not been well quantified, but may have important implications for the functioning of tidal channels as habitat for marsh-dependent species. …

Experimental And Modeling Studies Of Contaminant Transport In Capped Sediments During Gas Bubble Ebullition, Qingzhong Yuan Jan 2007

Experimental And Modeling Studies Of Contaminant Transport In Capped Sediments During Gas Bubble Ebullition, Qingzhong Yuan

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Fluxes of the three organics and eighteen metals from sediments were measured with diffusion chambers, and the effectiveness of a sand cap ascertained. The influence of sediment consolidation on contaminant flux and the mass transfer coefficient at the sediment-water interface was studied. A two-layer diffusion-advection model and consolidation model were coupled to elucidate the effect of sediment consolidation on chemical transport in the sediment-cap system. The model was tested and verified by the experimental data from microcosms, and then was used to predict phenanthrene flux under field conditions. The simulation results showed that consolidation could accelerate phenanthrene breakthrough and enhance …

A Home-Based Intervention To Promote Physical Activity In Low Income African American Adults, Dorothy Fauntleroy Whitehead Jan 2007

A Home-Based Intervention To Promote Physical Activity In Low Income African American Adults, Dorothy Fauntleroy Whitehead

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Physical activity has long been regarded as a key component to a healthy lifestyle; however, the U.S. has disturbingly high rates of sedentary behavior and related chronic illnesses (National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion, 2003). While many studies have attempted to address inactive lifestyle, few have reached out to high risk groups, such as African Americans and low income individuals. A recent review of the physical activity literature among African Americans called for more research with this population and encouraged future studies to focus on enduring exercise behavior (at least 6 months post intervention) and use theory-based …

Lymphohistiocytic Proliferative Syndrome Of Alligators (Alligator Mississippiensis): A Cutaneous Manifestation Of West Nile Virus, Javier G. Nevarez

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

ABSTRACT In 1999, there were reports of a new type of lesion in the hides of captive reared alligators from Florida. Similar lesions were first reported from alligator hides in Louisiana in 2001; however, it wasn’t until 2002 that small epizootics became apparent. In 2002, the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries began a collaborative effort with the Louisiana State University School of Veterinary Medicine (LSU SVM) to help elucidate the etiology of “PIX” disease, later renamed Lymphohistiocytic Proliferative Syndrome of Alligators (LPSA). Preliminary work concluded that LPSA was a systemic disease affecting multiple tissues. Based on the results of …

An Applied Evaluation Of Resurgence: Functional Communication Training (Fct) And Treatment Relapse, Valerie Marie Volkert Jan 2007

An Applied Evaluation Of Resurgence: Functional Communication Training (Fct) And Treatment Relapse, Valerie Marie Volkert

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Extinction is a very important component of functional communication training (FCT). Thus, the potential undesirable effects of extinction must be considered before this type of treatment is implemented. Resurgence, the recurrence of previously reinforced behavior when another behavior is placed on extinction, is a possible undesirable effect of extinction. Resurgence may account for some instances of treatment relapse in situations where problem behavior recovers following implementation of extinction-based treatments such as FCT. Despite the potential relevance of resurgence to understanding why problem behavior may re-emerge, few applied studies have examined resurgence effects. The current study attempted to determine whether resurgence …

Identifying Effective And Ineffective Schools For Accountability Purposes: A Comparison Of Four Generic Types Of Accountability Models, Fen Yu Jan 2007

Identifying Effective And Ineffective Schools For Accountability Purposes: A Comparison Of Four Generic Types Of Accountability Models, Fen Yu

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The stakes associated with student performance have been raised to new highs under the No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB, 2001). Many people are concerned with the adequacy and appropriateness of the statistical models used in identifying low-performing schools for educational accountability. The purpose of this study was to compare four generic types of accountability models (i.e., status models, improvement models, growth models, and value-added models) and see if they reach consistent/inconsistent conclusions regarding the effectiveness of the same set of schools. Further, the four models were also compared in terms of “fairness”. A fair model is defined as one …

"I Hear You, But I Don't Understand You": The Effects Of Peer Tutoring For Helping Secondary Esl Students Achieve Academic Success, Mary Pyron Jan 2007

"I Hear You, But I Don't Understand You": The Effects Of Peer Tutoring For Helping Secondary Esl Students Achieve Academic Success, Mary Pyron

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

When I began teaching 11th grade English in Houston, Texas, I quickly discovered that students who speak English as a second language are sometimes drastically under-prepared for the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills (TAKS) test, the state’s high stakes test required during the 11th grade year. The result of their inability to pass the test is that they do not graduate, which limits their future career and academic choices. In a semester-long research study at a typical high school in Houston, Texas, I explored the possibility of assisting ESL/LEP students transplanted to Houston as they struggled with English proficiency …

Spatial Analysis Of The Preserved Wooden Architectural Remains Of Eight Late Classic Maya Salt Works In Punta Ycacos Lagoon, Toledo District, Belize, Bretton Michael Somers Jan 2007

Spatial Analysis Of The Preserved Wooden Architectural Remains Of Eight Late Classic Maya Salt Works In Punta Ycacos Lagoon, Toledo District, Belize, Bretton Michael Somers

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation examined the remains of wooden architecture at eight Late Classic Maya sites found beneath the surface of Punta Ycacos Lagoon in southern Belize. The presence of briquetage on the surface and embedded among the clusters of wooden architectural features implies association with salt production activity. This research is significant in that the preservation of wooden structures at the salt works has not previously been reported for the ancient Maya. This dissertation includes a detailed discussion of documented evidence of salt production throughout Mesoamerica from archaeological, historical and modern examples. The discussion also addressed the evidence of Maya wooden …

Which Green Policy?: An Analysis Of The Relationship Between State Environmental Policy And State Economic Growth, Renée L.A. Renegar Jan 2007

Which Green Policy?: An Analysis Of The Relationship Between State Environmental Policy And State Economic Growth, Renée L.A. Renegar

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This project examines state environmental policy and its effect upon state economic growth. State policymakers actively pursue policies intended to positively impact state economic growth. A policy area surrounded by controversy regarding its affect upon economic performance is that of environmental regulation. Prior research indicates that policymakers believe state environmental regulations influence business decisions to invest in certain areas. In this research I seek to determine whether states which deliberately enact more lax environmental regulatory standards succeed in increasing state economic growth. State economic growth is modeled as a function of environmental policy variables and range of national economic and …

Engineering A Photo-Control Mechanism For Rna Interference, Richard Andrew Blidner Jan 2007

Engineering A Photo-Control Mechanism For Rna Interference, Richard Andrew Blidner

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

RNA interference (RNAi) is a phenomenon in which RNA molecules elicit potent and sequence-specific post-transcriptional gene silencing. Nucleic acid chemical modifications have been incorporated to improve their pharmacological properties. Despite numerous developments in chemical modifications for increased stability, safety, and efficiency of these therapeutic agents, they still face challenges of spatial and temporal targeting. One potential targeting strategy uses photocaging techniques, which involves the covalent attachment of photolabile compounds to the effector NA species that blocks bioactivity until exposed to near UV-light. This work demonstrates that fully-2’-fluorinated nucleic acids (FNAs) can elicit RNAi and that these effectors are resistant to …

Hope For Today And Tomorrow: Identity Construction Power, And Persistence Of Community College Women Who Are First In Their Families To Attend College, Crystal Deer Lee Jan 2007

Hope For Today And Tomorrow: Identity Construction Power, And Persistence Of Community College Women Who Are First In Their Families To Attend College, Crystal Deer Lee

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation was a case study of four community college women who were first in their families to attend college. Through this study, the “first-generation” construct was analyzed in regard to its uses and limits. The researcher found the label as an identifier becomes problematic through social discourse. These results confirm London’s (1996) finding that students themselves do not necessarily find anything unique about their situations or anything in common with other students simply based on their being the first in their families to attend college. Therefore, the “first-generation” construct may be viewed primarily as a higher education versus an …

Peforming Louisiana: The History Of Cajun Dialect Humor And Its Impact On The Cajun Cultural Identity, Debrah Royer Richardson Jan 2007

Peforming Louisiana: The History Of Cajun Dialect Humor And Its Impact On The Cajun Cultural Identity, Debrah Royer Richardson

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Cajuns, the descendants of the Acadian diaspora begun in 1755, chose to live a largely isolated existence in Louisiana until elements in the nineteenth century began concerted efforts to assimilate the Cajuns. By the beginnings of the twentieth century, the dual challenges of enforced schooling and the prohibition of spoken French affected the Cajun sense of pride. Around the same time, outsiders (satirists from Louisiana who were not of Cajun descent) used the Cajun dialect, in publications and on the radio, to humorously skewer Louisiana politics. Over the last century, Cajun dialect humor has evolved along specific lines that have …

Factors That Influence Visual Attention And Their Effects On Safety In Driving: An Eye Movement Tracking Approach, Larry Bargola Nabatilan

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Statistics show that a high percentage of road related accidents are due to factors that cause impaired driving. Since information extraction in driving is predominantly a visual task, visual distraction and its implications are therefore important safety issues. The main objective of this research is to study some of the implications of demands to human’s attention and perception and how it affects performance of tasks such as driving. Specifically, the study aims to determine the changes that occur in the visual behavior of drivers with different levels of driving experience by tracking the movement of the eye; examine the effects …

Granular Contact Lubrication: Theory And Experiment, Karim El Kholy Jan 2007

Granular Contact Lubrication: Theory And Experiment, Karim El Kholy

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation is devoted to a theoretical and experimental study of the granular contact lubrication, both. The theory is based on the kinetic of the granular material where the granules interact with each other and with the boundary surfaces through instantaneous, binary collisions, characterized by a constant coefficient of restitution. Specifically this study focuses on granular lubrication in Couette flows. A series of simulations is reported and the results show good agreement with several published papers. Also, a theory that ties the true temperature to the grain mobility is developed. The true temperature of a granular material depends on the …

Isolation And Characterization Of The Siamese Family: A Novel Class Of Cell Cycle Regulators In Plants, Michelle Lynn Churchman Jan 2007

Isolation And Characterization Of The Siamese Family: A Novel Class Of Cell Cycle Regulators In Plants, Michelle Lynn Churchman

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Recessive mutations in the SIAMESE (SIM) gene of Arabidopsis result in multicellular trichomes harboring individual nuclei with a low ploidy level, a phenotype strikingly different from that of wild-type trichomes, which are single cells with a nuclear DNA content of approximately 16-32C. These observations suggested that SIM is required to suppress mitosis as part of the switch to endoreplication in trichomes. We demonstrate that SIM encodes a novel 14kD protein that is part of a small Arabidopsis gene family comprised of four members. Homologs exist in other dicots and in monocots, although no obvious animal homologs have been identified. SIM …

Locally Derived Nonpoint Loading Estimates For The Boeuf River/Bayou Lafourche Watershed, Emerald Purser Roider Jan 2007

Locally Derived Nonpoint Loading Estimates For The Boeuf River/Bayou Lafourche Watershed, Emerald Purser Roider

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

There is currently a great demand for data and models that can be used to quantify nonpoint source pollutant loads from different land-use types. The Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality (LDEQ) is in the process of implementing management programs for impacted water bodies based on the Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL) of a pollutant. Pollutants of concern include total suspended solids (TSS), nitrogen, and phosphorus. One of the key parameters in determining the TMDL of a water body is the nonpoint source pollutant load from different land-use types. To date, such load estimates in Louisiana are lacking. The primary objective …

However, a little over half of them reported having instructional designers or curriculum developers to help with the designing of web-based materials and a large majority reported having adequate institutional research resources (library holdings that are accessible …

Byron And "Scribbling Women": Lady Caroline Lamb, The Brontë Sisters, And George Eliot, Denise Tischler Millstein Jan 2007

Byron And "Scribbling Women": Lady Caroline Lamb, The Brontë Sisters, And George Eliot, Denise Tischler Millstein

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Looking first at Byron’s canon, I trace the evolution of the Byronic heroes offered in his poetry, arguing that these heroes are the culmination of images of the poet as he interacted with and was interpreted by his female reading audience. Working with his readers, Byron fundamentally altered his poetic heroes to suit changing public opinions about himself. In later chapters, I show how this image continued to evolve as the Byronic hero was co-opted, adopted, and adapted in the novels of female authors across the nineteenth century, especially Lady Caroline Lamb in Glenarvon, Emily Brontë in Wuthering Heights, Anne …

Semantic Image Retrieval Using Relevance Feedback And Transaction Logs, Amin Shah-Hosseini Jan 2007

Semantic Image Retrieval Using Relevance Feedback And Transaction Logs, Amin Shah-Hosseini

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Due to the recent improvements in digital photography and storage capacity, storing large amounts of images has been made possible, and efficient means to retrieve images matching a user’s query are needed. Content-based Image Retrieval (CBIR) systems automatically extract image contents based on image features, i.e. color, texture, and shape. Relevance feedback methods are applied to CBIR to integrate users’ perceptions and reduce the gap between high-level image semantics and low-level image features. The precision of a CBIR system in retrieving semantically rich (complex) images is improved in this dissertation work by making advancements in three areas of a CBIR …

Dna-Binding And Oligomerization Properties Of A Functionally Distinct Dps Homolog, Dps-1 From Deinococcus Radiodurans, Gargi Bhattacharyya Jan 2007

Dna-Binding And Oligomerization Properties Of A Functionally Distinct Dps Homolog, Dps-1 From Deinococcus Radiodurans, Gargi Bhattacharyya

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Dps (DNA protection during starvation) proteins play an important role in the protection of prokaryotic macromolecules from damage by reactive oxygen species. The Dps homolog, Dps-1, from the radiation-resistant bacterium Deinococcus radiodurans has an extended N-terminal tail. In the crystal structure of Dps-1, the first ~30 N-terminal residues are invisible and the remaining 25 residues form a loop that harbors a novel metal binding site. The data presented here show that retention of this N-terminal metal site is necessary for formation of the dodecameric protein assembly. Previous studies have suggested that the lysine-rich N-terminus of Dps proteins participates in DNA …

Analysis Of The Impact Of Fish Imports On Domestic Crawfish Prices And Economic Welfare Using Inverse Demand Systems, Young-Jae Lee Jan 2007

Analysis Of The Impact Of Fish Imports On Domestic Crawfish Prices And Economic Welfare Using Inverse Demand Systems, Young-Jae Lee

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This study is mainly intended to determine quantitatively the economic effects of crawfish imports on the domestic crawfish industry. Inverse demand systems are used to estimate the price and scale flexibility as an indicator for the effects of imports on crawfish domestic price. A variety of algebraic forms for empirical consumer allocation models have been developed. Economic theory, however, does not provide the necessary fundamental criteria to choose ex ante among the alternative specifications. Bartern (1993) and Brown, Lee, and Seale (1995) examined a family of inverse demand systems, showing that the integrated demand system, in its own right, has …

How The Internet Is Shaping The Chilean Scientific Community: Globalization And Dependency, Richard B. Duque Jan 2007

How The Internet Is Shaping The Chilean Scientific Community: Globalization And Dependency, Richard B. Duque

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The Internet has emerged as a catalyst for global knowledge production. This is supported by its positive impacts in the First World. A progressive assessment argues that the Internet will be the "elixir" that brings immediate visibility and relevance to scientific communities in the periphery. Yet, Internet diffusion is often framed by past technology failures that further widen global divides. This characterizes an "affliction" argument. The "teething argument" suggests that adoption within the Third World is tentative at best with benefits unfolding over time in some regions but not others. This dissertation is a qualitative and quantitative study that tests …

Computing And Analyzing Gravitational Radiation In Black Hole Simulations Using A New Multi-Block Approach To Numerical Relativity, Ernst Nils Dorband

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Numerical simulations of Kerr black holes are presented and the excitation of quasinormal modes is studied in detail. Issues concerning the extraction of gravitational waves from numerical space-times and analyzing them in a systematic way are discussed. A new multi-block infrastructure for solving first order symmetric hyperbolic time dependent partial differential equations is developed and implemented in a way that stability is guaranteed for arbitrary high order accurate numerical schemes. Multi-block methods make use of several coordinate patches to cover a computational domain. This provides efficient, flexible and very accurate numerical schemes. Using this code, three dimensional simulations of perturbed …
