Promoting University Inventors: Patent Collection In Shocker Open Access Repository, Susan J. Matveyeva Dr., Samantha Henning
Promoting University Inventors: Patent Collection In Shocker Open Access Repository, Susan J. Matveyeva Dr., Samantha Henning
Kansas Library Association College and University Libraries Section Proceedings
Wichita State University is known for its advances in STEM research for many decades, but there were few inventions patented by WSU. In recent years, commercialization of the results of applied research, especially bioengineering, became a university focus; the number of WSU owned patents increased significantly. WSU initiated several initiatives to support university inventors. These included the development of the Innovation Campus and WSU Venture. The Wichita State University Libraries decided to join these efforts by not only providing information to inventors as a Patent and Trademark Resource Center but to archive and increase awareness of their patents. To increase …

Transcending Institutions And Borders: 21st Century Digital Scholarship At K-State, Rebel Cummings-Sauls, Rachel Miles, Ryan Otto, Charlene N. Simser
Kansas Library Association College and University Libraries Section Proceedings
Digital scholarship of the 21st century transcends institutions and borders with its freedom from print and physical locations. This case study reviews aspects of establishing a sustainable digital scholarship center, supporting open access through the institutional repository (K-State Research Exchange - K-REx) and an open access publishing platform (New Prairie Press – NPP) along with other outreach efforts. The Center for the Advancement of Digital Scholarship (CADS) at K-State Libraries serves our campus community, but digital scholarship extends K-State's impact far beyond Manhattan, Kansas. Highlighting the scholarship at our campus is only one small piece of the landscape. Collaboration …

Publishing And Archiving Trends In Open Access: Preliminary Results, Jenny Oleen, Diana Farmer, Livia Olsen
Kansas Library Association College and University Libraries Section Proceedings
Agricultural researchers are engaged in the growing open access (OA) movement, either publishing in OA journals or archiving in OA repositories. The latter is reflected in the use of the institutional repository (IR) at Kansas State University (K-State), a land grant institution. K-State library faculty are analyzing faculty publications to determine the publishing and archiving habits of selected researchers. Reviewing copyright agreements from journals reveals those with policies for archiving post-prints in an IR; articles by these authors are compared to their total three-year article output to determine the efficacy of the current IR program at K-State. Chosen for analysis …
Evaluation And Implementation Of A Discovery Tool, Susan Johns-Smith
Evaluation And Implementation Of A Discovery Tool, Susan Johns-Smith
Kansas Library Association College and University Libraries Section Proceedings
The buzz in campus libraries is "Discovery Tools" -- how they work and how our patrons use them. But first, a library needs to evaluate and implement the discovery product. Experiences with Pittsburg State University's implementation of Serials Solutions' Summon product are presented, along with a select bibliography of early implementer literature, as a guide to successful implementation for the small- to medium-sized library.
Building New Interfaces For Shocker Open Access Repository, Sai Deng
Building New Interfaces For Shocker Open Access Repository, Sai Deng
Kansas Library Association College and University Libraries Section Proceedings
Wichita State University Libraries recently upgraded its DSpace based institutional repository, Shocker Open Access Repository (SOAR), to the new version 1.6.2 with an XML-based interface “Manakin”. Manakin gives the possibility of creating different interfaces called “themes”. Themes provide branding for various communities and new visual effects for images and other collections. This article will address the customization of Manakin and the implementation of new features from an institution’s experience. It will cover the process to prepare and create the local theme, test the interfaces for communities and collections and in different browsers. The experiences and techniques shared can be applied …
