From Vision To Legacy: Walter Gellhorn And The Establishment Of The Toshiba Library For Japanese Legal Research, Yukino Nakashima
Journal of East Asian Libraries
This paper chronicles events surrounding the creation of the largest academic Japanese law library in the United States, while focusing on two extraordinary law faculty members at Columbia Law School and their successful fundraising efforts from the initial concept of building a Japanese law library through the establishment of permanent funding. It recounts others who tirelessly supported carrying through this arduous plan. It is about insightful visions, perseverance, and lasting personal relationships, as well as building a foreign law collection in the United States. It examines lessons to be learned.

As the Pandemic disrupted normal communication patterns and networking opportunities, videoconferencing, usually using the Zoom platform, became the preferred method for academic institutions to continue providing instruction to students and supporting researchers. In 2021, the Plains to Pacific Alliance (PPA) developed plans to use this technology to present a workshop series on the JapanKnowledge database that would be open to Japanese studies researchers and students in North America and beyond. This entailed deciding on content, developing instructional materials, promoting the workshops in collaboration with the North American Coordinating Council on Japanese Library Resources, creating a registration system, presenting the workshops …

March 15 of this year marked the fifth anniversary of my arrival at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD). On a bright, warm spring day in 1988,1 moved to the arid, scenic suburban La Jolla campus from the equally beautiful and balmy city of Berkeley where I had worked as a Japanese bibliographer for the century-old University of California, Berkeley (UCB) Library for two and a half decades. The past five years here in southern California have been one of the finest chapters of my professional life — perhaps the last — and a truly fascinating one. As I …

This task force was formed in August 1992 to work for the Association of Research Libraries (ARL) Foreign acquisitions Project for Japanese materials. The charge of the task force is to write a report which assesses current strengths and weaknesses of the major United States and Canadian Japanese research collections, determines their needs and priorities, and offers concrete action/funding proposals to address the identified problems. Fortunately, a number of previous reports and studies on the issues are available, and we reviewed and studied them carefully, including the "Survey" (1980) by Naomi Fukuda, the Perushek Report (1990), and the reports of …

Acquisition Of The Mitsui Collection By The East Asiatic Library, University Of California, Berkeley, Roger Sherman
Journal of East Asian Libraries
Not long after World War II came to a close, there was a burgeoning of interest in area studies, which prompted many academic libraries in the United States to embark on extensive acquisitions programs to obtain foreign books for their universities. At the Berkeley campus of the University of California, it was recognized that there was a need on the West Coast for a strong collection of East Asian research materials. This led to the establishment of the East Asiatic Library (EAL) in 1947 as a separate branch on campus. The first few years at the Library were a period …
