Real Time Optimal Resource Allocation In Natural Hazard Management, Paolo Fiorucci, F. Gaetani, R. Minciardi, Roberto Sacile, E. Trasforini

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

In the emergency management phase relevant to the occurrence of a catastrophic natural event, the efficiency of the emergency system can be deeply influenced by a correct assignment of the available resources to the “demand” centers, i.e., those elements of the territory that are directly involved in the event. In this paper, a general formulation of the real time optimal resource allocation problem is presented, and it is formalized as a mathematical programming problem. The dynamics relevant both to the resources over the territory and to the prediction of the behavior of the natural phenomenon are suitably taken into account. …

Modelling Environmental Risk, Suhejla Hoti, Michael Mcaleer, Laurent L. Pauwels

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

As environmental issues have become increasingly important in economic research and policy forsustainable development, firms in the private sector have introduced environmental and social issues in conductingtheir business activities. Such behaviour is tracked by the Dow Jones Sustainable Indexes (DJSI) through financialmarket indexes that are derived from the Dow Jones Global Indexes. The sustainability activities of firms areassessed using criteria in three areas, namely economic, environmental and social. Risk (or uncertainty) is analysedempirically through the use of conditional volatility models of investment in sustainability-driven firms that areselected through the DJSI. The empirical analysis is based on financial econometric models to …

Environmental issues and risk have become central in socioeconomic research and policy planning inorder to ensure sustainable development. As environmental risk is difficult to assess and measure, differentindexes have been developed to evaluate specific aspects of such risk. Environmental risk typically involvesproblems generated by the consumption of energy (fuels), water shortages, disasters, global warming, poverty, andpopulation growth. Environmental indexes are typically disaggregated and deal with separate aspects ofenvironmental risk. Some useful overall indexes exist, such as the Environmental Sustainability Index (ESI). Thispaper reviews the existing data and indexes for environmental risk.
