Integrated Assessment Of Water Stress In Ceará, Brazil, Under Climate Change Forcing, Maarten S. Krol, Pieter R. Van Oel

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

Surface water is the main source of fresh water supply in Ceará, lying in the semi-arid Northeast of Brazil.

How Tight Are The Limits To Land And Water Use? – Com-Bined Impacts Of Food Demand And Climate Change, Hermann Lotze-Campen, Christoph Mülle, Alberte Bondeau, Pascalle Smith, Wolfgang Lucht

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

In the coming decades, world agricultural systems will face serious transitions. Population growth, income and lifestyle changes will lead to considerable increases in food demand. Moreover, a rising demand for renewable energy and biodiversity protection may restrict the area available for food production. On the other hand, global climate change will affect production conditions, for better or worse depending on re-gional conditions. In order to simulate these combined effects consistently and in a spatially explicit way, we have linked the Lund-Potsdam-Jena Dynamic Global Vegetation Model (LPJ) with a "Management model of Agricultural Production and its Impact on the Environment" (MAgPIE). …

Application Of Genetic Algorithms For The Optimisation Of Multi-Pollutant Multi-Effect Problems, Stefan Reis, Steffen Nitter, Rainer Friedrich Jul 2004

Application Of Genetic Algorithms For The Optimisation Of Multi-Pollutant Multi-Effect Problems, Stefan Reis, Steffen Nitter, Rainer Friedrich

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

In this paper, crucial aspects of the implications and the complexity of interconnected multipollutantmulti-effect assessments of both air pollution control strategies and the closely related reduction ofGreenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions will be discussed. The main aims of the work described here are to identifythe core problems which occur when trying to apply current state-of-the-art methodology to conductintegrated assessments – in this context, cost-benefit assessment (CBA) as well as cost-effectivenessassessment (CEA) – using sophisticated computer models and propose solutions to the problems identified. The approaches described will display the integrated use of databases, efficient Genetic Algorithms (GA) andalready existing software tools and …

River Flow Simulation Within Ungauged Catchments; The Utility Of Regionalised Models, Andrew Young, N. S. Reynard Jul 2004

River Flow Simulation Within Ungauged Catchments; The Utility Of Regionalised Models, Andrew Young, N. S. Reynard

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

The extraction of information from hydrological data has been increased by the use of multiple objective functions which lead to trade off strategies during model calibration. Uncertainty within input data, model calibration and structure and parameter regionalisation schemes all led to uncertainty within model simulations when used as predictive tools. However, model success and failure is commonly determined not by abstract fit statistics but by the sensitivity of subsequent analyses to the uncertainty in the simulated stream flow data. This paper will explore some of these issues in the context of the assessment of potential impacts of climate change on …
