Psychology Of Design Open Education Textbook: An Application-Driven Design, William Sowards
Psychology Of Design Open Education Textbook: An Application-Driven Design, William Sowards
Instructional Psychology and Technology Graduate Student Projects
Understanding the relationship between psychology and design is key for all of the different disciplines of design. The Design Psychology: Applying Theory to Design Practice textbook aims to address the gap in OER content by discussing more explicitly the relationship between psychology and design. A well-designed textbook can ensure that learners are enabled to learn both on their own and in a group setting. The chapter template for the Design Psychology: Applying Theory to Design Practice textbook is designed to ensure that every chapter in the textbook has consistent flow, pedagogy, and design. This consistency in design will provide learners …

Instructional Psychology and Technology Graduate Student Projects
The purpose of this project was to update BYU-Online course material for Stress Management (EXSC 410). This course teaches the basic physiology of stress, its impact on the body, and several methods of coping with stress to live a balanced and healthy lifestyle. Using Merril's first principles of instruction, the course was reformatted to align with the action-based learning outcomes for the course. Application activities were created and students reported that they used the stress management skills they were taught in the course.
Developing An Instructional Video Series Teaching Tabletop Games, Sam Jackson
Developing An Instructional Video Series Teaching Tabletop Games, Sam Jackson
Instructional Psychology and Technology Graduate Student Projects
This report describes the design and development of a video series (YouTube channel) teaching how to play tabletop games. The goal of each video is to prepare viewers to confidently play the game in question. Players do not need to fully understand every minute detail of the game’s rules, but questions during gameplay should be minimal and easily resolved without significant harm to newcomers’ strategy.
For the scope of this project, I made three videos to teach two very different games (Sushi Go! and Tortuga 1667). Creating these videos allowed me to teach a few popular games, but …

Online Learning Checkpoints: Exploring The Role Of Mandatory Student And Ta Interaction And Perceptions Of Satisfaction And Usefulness, Carolyn Andrews
Online Learning Checkpoints: Exploring The Role Of Mandatory Student And Ta Interaction And Perceptions Of Satisfaction And Usefulness, Carolyn Andrews
Instructional Psychology and Technology Graduate Student Projects
With the rapid growth of online learning, there is considerable attention focused on student interaction and satisfaction in online courses. Instructors are instrumental in orchestrating interaction. When interaction is dissected, three distinct functions are identified. Researchers have identified T.A.’s as capable of fulfilling some of these instructor functions. TA’s from Brigham Young University’s online program conduct 3 predetermined checkpoints with each of their students. Checkpoints are used to monitor the progress and to ensure its timely advancement. The purpose of this study is to understand the nature and effectiveness of T.A. - student checkpoint interactions. Specifically, this research seeks to …

Faculty Members’ Lived Experiences With Open Educational Resources, Michael Troy Martin
Faculty Members’ Lived Experiences With Open Educational Resources, Michael Troy Martin
Instructional Psychology and Technology Graduate Student Projects
The cost of textbooks has continued to increase, and the financial effect on students in higher education is significant. Numerous studies have been done to learn more about student and faculty perceptions toward Open Educational Resources (OER) use. Recent studies confirm that most instructors would use OER in order to alleviate the financial burden placed on students; however, OER adoption rates do not reflect this belief. In my study I sought to better understand what instructors experience when they search for OER. In this phenomenological study, I interviewed faculty who expressed a desire to use OER and to capture their …
Teacher-Less Teaching: The Efficacy Of Student-Taught Soft Skill Modules, Jacob Brown
Teacher-Less Teaching: The Efficacy Of Student-Taught Soft Skill Modules, Jacob Brown
Instructional Psychology and Technology Graduate Student Projects
This report presents the results of an implementation evaluation of new modular content for the BYU ACME Soft Skills seminar. The seminar was changed from a teacher-led seminar to a student-facilitated, teacher-less model. Evaluative data was gathered using a mixed methods approach, including in-class observations, surveys, and personal and small group interviews. The new seminar structure was piloted over two semesters in the student teacher facilitated teacher-less format and was met largely positively by students, who reported high engagement and beneficial soft skill development. Students provided suggestions for seminar improvement, such as offering graded credit, integrating the seminar with other …

Development Of A Software Prototype For Generating And Classifying Incomplete Many-Facet-Rasch Model Rating Designs, Mary R. Mcewen
Development Of A Software Prototype For Generating And Classifying Incomplete Many-Facet-Rasch Model Rating Designs, Mary R. Mcewen
Instructional Psychology and Technology Graduate Student Projects
This doctoral research project created a software prototype to generate, classify, and visualize all possible (a priori unique) incomplete rating designs for eight raters and 24 rating objects, with 25%, 50%, and 75% rater coverage, for sub-designs that repeat over four, six, and eight rating objects. Additionally it produced a representative rater schedule (incidence matrix), concurrence matrix, and network graph visualization for each design class. Lastly, the project report included recommendations for processes researchers can use when creating an incomplete rating design.
The main conclusions of this study are as follows:
1. Incomplete designs can vary greatly in …
