English Identity In The Writings Of John Milton, Hannah E. Ryan

John Milton is an essential writer to the English canon. Understanding his life and thought is necessary to understanding his corpus. This thesis will examine Milton’s nationalism in several major and minor poems as well as in some of Milton’s prose. It will argue that Milton’s nationalism is difficult to trace chronologically, but that education is always essential to Milton’s national vision of England.

Sugar Goes Spelunking: An Engine To Build Your Own Text Adventure, Avita Rutkin

Computer games can be effective educational tools. Studies show that classroom computers increase students’ motivation to learn, promote collaboration among peers, and have the potential to improve classroom performance. Text adventures, a form of technological storytelling, particularly align with many of the qualities of successful learning games. To that end, I developed an activity for Sugar, One Laptop Per Child’s free and open-source desktop environment, in which children can create and play their own text adventures. My activity, Spelunk, will launch on Sugar in the spring of this year.

President Obama has proposed that the United States increase the number of college graduates by 8 million by 2020 in order to raise national educational standards and to engage in global competition. Obama’s policies and rhetoric frequently describe “education as a pathway to success” and “education as a pathway to jobs,” but fail to emphasize its comprehensive, intrinsic values. America’s national discussion on education needs to shift away from framing higher education merely as pathway to the workforce, and should focus instead on education as a vital part of a well-lived life.
