Student Perception Of Parental Responses To Their Adolescent Behaviors: The Characteristics Of Those Who Are Labeled Negatively And The Impact Of The Labels, Stephanie Medley Aug 2002

Student Perception Of Parental Responses To Their Adolescent Behaviors: The Characteristics Of Those Who Are Labeled Negatively And The Impact Of The Labels, Stephanie Medley

Honors Theses

The following research uses labeling theory to determine what type of individual is most likely to be labeled negatively by their parents during adolescence. Labeling theory hypothesizes that if an individual is negatively labeled they are more likely to engage in secondary deviance than an individual who is not labeled negatively. The assumptions of labeling theory will be identified. Types and levels of deviance will be identified. Prior research will also be examined to identify what types of characteristics have already been identified as to increase the likelihood ofbeing labeled negatively. Next, the sample and methodology will be identified. The …

Don't Worry... It [Corn] Won't Kill You: The Starlink Crisis, Kelly J. Price Jun 2002

Don't Worry... It [Corn] Won't Kill You: The Starlink Crisis, Kelly J. Price

Honors Theses

What would you do ... if someone told you that the food you just ate was not safe for human consumption? In 1999, consumers across the nation were faced with this fear and began to second-guess the food they had been accustomed to eating for years. After Kraft Foods' Taco Bell taco shells were recalled in September for containing traces of StarLink corn, a genetically modified corn hybrid not approved for human consumption, consumer confidence in U.S. corn by-products decreased and manufacturer credibility dwindled (Aventis stops, 2000). People wanted to know who to blame for the apparent food contamination problem. …

Weinreb Amides : Novel Titanium Enolate Reagents, Andrew J. Leyhane Jun 2002

Weinreb Amides : Novel Titanium Enolate Reagents, Andrew J. Leyhane

Honors Theses

The amides of N-methoxy-N-methylamine or "Weinreb amide" have earned an important role in synthetic chemistry as both a protective group and as synthetic intermediates. We have discovered that the Weinreb amide of acetic acid, N-methoxy-N-methylacetamide adds to aldehydes to afford classic aldol products in good to excellent yields. The scope of this novel aldol reaction will be discussed.

Inclusion Chemistry Of Neutral Nonlinear Optical Dyes Within Organically Modified Silicates, Ian Saratovsky Jun 2002

Inclusion Chemistry Of Neutral Nonlinear Optical Dyes Within Organically Modified Silicates, Ian Saratovsky

Honors Theses

The field of photonics involves the use of light to acquire, store, process, and transmit information. Nonlinear optical (NLO) materials are crucial for success in the advancement of photonic devices. Laponite and hectorite host assemblies have been shown previously by our group to induce I -aggregation of nonlinear optical (NLO) dyes and offer facile routes to film fabrication. Head-to-tail alignment (J-aggregation) of the NLO chromophores is a required condition for photonic applications. In this study, tetrabutylammonium, triethylhexylammonium, trimethyldodecylammonium, and trimetylcetylarunonium surfactants were utilized to render the smectic intergallery region organophilic thus facilitating chromophore intercalation and an increased J-aggregated dye fraction. …

The Use Of Substituted Cyclodextrins In Capillary Electrophoresis For The Separation And Identification Of Methorphan Enantiomers, Colleen Strait Jun 2002

The Use Of Substituted Cyclodextrins In Capillary Electrophoresis For The Separation And Identification Of Methorphan Enantiomers, Colleen Strait

Honors Theses

The goal of this project was to separate the enantiomers levo and dextromethorphan using capillary electrophoresis (CE). Levomethorphan is a controlled substance, and dextromethorphan is an active ingredient in many cough syrups. Methylated-β-cyclodextrins (CDs) are used as additives because the CDs have chiral centers, allowing them to bind differently to the two enantiomers and thereby changing the enantiomer migration times in CE. Dimethyl- β-CD did not separate the levo and dextromethorphans; however the trimethyl-β-CD was successful at producing baseline separation with migration times of roughly 6 minutes. We are optimizing it by changing variables such as type of buffer, buffer …

The Optimization Of Sol-Gels As Sensing Arrays And The Testing Of Sol-Gel Precursors Through The Use Of Fluorescence Measurements Of Eosin-Y, Rachel M. Bukowski Jun 2002

The Optimization Of Sol-Gels As Sensing Arrays And The Testing Of Sol-Gel Precursors Through The Use Of Fluorescence Measurements Of Eosin-Y, Rachel M. Bukowski

Honors Theses

The purpose of the first project, performed in collaboration with Professor Frank Bright of SUNY at Buffalo, was to optimize the conditions and variables for a Cartesian Technologies Pinprinter to print reproducible spots of sol-gels doped with Ruthenium Diphenylphenathrene (Ru(dpp)32+), an oxygen-sensing complex, on microscope slides. We attempted to optimize these variables by l) the alteration of the printing speed of the sol-gel microarrays, 2) variation of the drying temperature of the gels after they had been printed, 3) controlling the reaction rate of the sol-gel, and 4) various methods of slide pre-treatment. We found that a print speed of …

A Stereoselective Multi-Component Synthesis Of Alpha-Oxy-Beta-Substituted-Beta-Amino Esters, Avrum L. Joffe Jun 2002

A Stereoselective Multi-Component Synthesis Of Alpha-Oxy-Beta-Substituted-Beta-Amino Esters, Avrum L. Joffe

Honors Theses

Previous work has shown that chlorotitanium enolates of methylmethoxy acetate add to aryl aldimines in a stereoselective fashion. Aryl aldimines are non-enolizable, which contributes to their ability to add to the enolates. Previous attempts to add the enolates to enolizable alkyl aldimines were unsuccessful. By using a multi-component process in which the aldimine is synthesized in-situ, we have expanded the scope of this chemistry to the enolizable alkyl aldimines. Furthermore, the multi-component process has proven to be stereoselective for the anti-adduct.

The Effects Of De-Tracking On Students And Teachers, Jacob M. Bultema, Kristen M. Scranton May 2002

The Effects Of De-Tracking On Students And Teachers, Jacob M. Bultema, Kristen M. Scranton

Honors Theses

School districts use an array of methods to group students for their academic needs. In years past, many schools have tracked their students. This practice involves placing students in different classes according to their ability levels and past academic record. However, in recent years, some schools have decided to do away with this homogenous grouping and instead "detrack" their schools, grouping students heterogeneously. Proponents of tracking argue that homogenous grouping is advantageous to higher-ability learners. Teachers sometimes find it difficult to teach students with the broad range or achievement levels typically found in a heterogeneous environment. It is also argued …

Role Of Venture Capital Financing In Inflating The Technology Stock Market Bubble, Jessica Rosenbloom May 2002

Role Of Venture Capital Financing In Inflating The Technology Stock Market Bubble, Jessica Rosenbloom

Honors Theses

Comprising nearly one-third of the nation's gross domestic product from 1995 to 1999, the growth of the Information Technology industry took a backseat to dot.com mania. Its companies, however, were just as influential in creating the stock market bubble. Characterized by high technology, high research and development, high profits, and high risk, the Information Technology industry had always been attractive to venture capital investors. This study will find that a Telecommunications Deregulation Act passed in 1996, in conjunction with an eight percent capital gains tax cut in 1997, flooded venture capitalists with business plans pertaining to the Information Technology industry. …

Asymmetric Wealth Effect : American Consumption And The Stock Market, Jonathan Greene May 2002

Asymmetric Wealth Effect : American Consumption And The Stock Market, Jonathan Greene

Honors Theses

Conventional estimates of the marginal propensity to consume (MPC) out of changes in net worth average about 4 cents on the dollar. If this is true, the $14 trillion rise in household net worth between 1995 and 2000 created an additional $567 billion in household consumption. This increase in net worth was driven almost entirely by the rising values of security prices in the contemporary bull market. This study presents evidence that this "wealth effect" is in fact asymmetrical and that this asymmetry reversed some time during the 1970's or 1980's. Prior to this reversal point positive changes in slock …

Ecuador's Indigenous University Movement, Uinpi: Reconstructing Identity In The Search For Equality, Joshua Gerber May 2002

Ecuador's Indigenous University Movement, Uinpi: Reconstructing Identity In The Search For Equality, Joshua Gerber

Honors Theses

The following chapters address Ecuadorian history, identity politics. and the education system to analyze UINPI's role in the reformation of indigenous identity. To provide a backdrop for UINPI's identity project, chapter one establishes a historical framework of the development of racialized constructions of indigenous identity in Ecuador. It utilizes Plumwood's hierarchical dualism to address the ways in which identity ideology justified and motivated the often-brutal socio-political domination of euro-mestizo peoples in Ecuador. Chapter two addresses the role of identity at UlNPI, arguing that the university's identity project is oriented towards the reformation of indigenous identity, rather than the representation of …

Communicator-In-Chief: Presidential Use Of Television Past, Present, And Future, Jenna Wasson May 2002

Communicator-In-Chief: Presidential Use Of Television Past, Present, And Future, Jenna Wasson

Honors Theses

This thesis seeks to determine how television has changed as a communication medium for presidents over the past half century. An evaluation of the evolving ways presidents use television to communicate with and to build support from the American people has been conducted. Presidential communication strategies have been identified by drawing primarily from primary sources written by presidents and White House staff. Television technology and the television audience have changed over the years. Presidents have taken a more pro-active, aggressive role in their efforts to harness television for their own purposes. Why have these changes occurred? What impact have these …

Medicine Men Of The Anti-Progressive Party : Sacred Sites, Public Lands, And The Construction Of Religious Liberty, Jacob Culbertson May 2002

Medicine Men Of The Anti-Progressive Party : Sacred Sites, Public Lands, And The Construction Of Religious Liberty, Jacob Culbertson

Honors Theses

On December 29, 1890 the United States Seventh Calvary descended upon a group of practitioners of the blossoming Ghost Dance religion and killed more than 300 Indians belonging to multiple Northern Plains nations. The massacre at Wounded Knee Creek was the apex of the United States government's violent campaign to win the American west from its original inhabitants, and it marked a transition in strategy in the young republic's assault on Native America. Having essentially won the land battles to annex the bulk of the economically valuable Native territory, the United States turned its attention away from the physical disposal …

Integrated Test For Exploitation And Discrimination In The National Basketball Association, Kathleen Carney May 2002

Integrated Test For Exploitation And Discrimination In The National Basketball Association, Kathleen Carney

Honors Theses

Over the past thirty years, economists have become increasingly interested in the labor market for professional sports. These studies have focused primarily on exploitation, the difference between marginal revenue product and salary, or discrimination, salary differentials based on race, or ethnic background. This paper attempts to combine both areas of research, that is, to explain the systematic deviation of marginal revenue product from salary as a function of race, or ethnic background. Using NBA data collected over three seasons 1995-98, we specify a three-equation model, an enhancement of the Scully two-step method presented in 1976. We then ask if players …

Synthesis And Dna Binding Of Cis And Trans-Rucl2 (Dmso)4, Thomas Curran May 2002

Synthesis And Dna Binding Of Cis And Trans-Rucl2 (Dmso)4, Thomas Curran

Honors Theses

The synthesis of both cis and trans-RuCl?(DMSO)? has been reported in literature, and is currently the only way of acquiring these compounds. Because these metallodrugs have shown similar antitumor properties to cisplatin, they are currently under investigation for use in clinical trials as potential chemotherapeutics. It is believed that these drugs act in a way similar to cisplatin by causing intrastrand crosslinking of adjacent guanine residues in DNA. In an attempt to better understand any Ru/DNA interaction for these compounds, both cis and trans-RuCl?(DMSO)? were synthesized with reasonable yields (~40%). The compounds were then characterized by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), …

Analysis Of The Colby Quarterly Econometric Model Of The U.S. Economy Using The Economic Effects Of September 11th, Alison Culpen

Honors Theses

The economic repercussions of September 11th are unique in that never before have economists needed to forecast and examine the impact of an event of such magnitude. This paper explains many of the economic effects of September l Ith, from the initial aftermath to recent developments. These effects are used to analyze the Colby Quarterly Econometric Model of the U.S. economy by simulating the model with actions taken by the government, such as an increase in spending, as well as other economic consequences resulting from September 11th. These simulations are then examined in more detail through multipliers that ultimately reveal …

Discounting Of Delayed Consequences In Women With A History Of Abuse, Meghan S. Harrison May 2002

Discounting Of Delayed Consequences In Women With A History Of Abuse, Meghan S. Harrison

Honors Theses

Women with a history of abuse often have difficulty escaping abusive relationships. One potential factor that may influence this behavior is inappropriate sensitivity to delayed or diffused outcomes. The purpose of this research was to obtain measurements of sensitivity to delayed consequences in women with histories of abuse. Participants engaged in a hypothetical money choice task to determine the relative subjective value of delayed rewards. A quantitative model relating delay to subjective value was fit to each the data. Based upon comparison with data previously reported in the literature, women with histories ofabuse discount delayed rewards to a lesser degree …
