The Effect Of A Sheet Tension Controller On The Productivity Of A Papermachine, Timothy J. Rummel
The Effect Of A Sheet Tension Controller On The Productivity Of A Papermachine, Timothy J. Rummel
Honors Theses
This thesis proposal outlines a project in which the efficiency of a papermachine is increased by controlling the tension through the dryer section. The controlled tension is expected to reduce wet end breaks and to decrease the steam demand of the dryer section. The experiment will be run by placing a laser positioning sensor above the open draw of a papermachine and monitoring the position of the draw until an optimum height of the paper has been determined. Then an automatic drive controller will be connected to the wet end drive to maintain a constant draw height and the machine …
Betrayed. The Legacy Of The African American Soldier, Timothy Hampton
Betrayed. The Legacy Of The African American Soldier, Timothy Hampton
Honors Theses
America has called upon its citizens on many occasions to defend its interests. Once called upon, American citizens usually respond with enthusiasm, courage, and great composure. They become American soldiers. The citizen/soldier's obligation is to "support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic," and to "bear true faith and allegiance to the same...." (Department of Defense Form No. 4, 1992). With this affirmation, military campaigns are launched. Missions are undertaken. Battles are fought. Ultimately, people die fighting for this nation.
Characterization Of Metal-Regulated Genes In Pseudomonas Fluorescens, Melanie Pearson
Characterization Of Metal-Regulated Genes In Pseudomonas Fluorescens, Melanie Pearson
Honors Theses
One side effect of today's industrialized world is increased levels of heavy metals in the environment. Many of these metals are necessary for biological function as trace elements, but at higher concentrations are toxic. Other metals, such as cadmium, are not beneficial at any level, and have only deleterious effects on living organisms. Cadmium is primarily thought to interfere with normal biological function of proteins. Human exposure to cadmium appears to primarily damage the kidneys, but may also affect the liver, lungs, immune system, and central nervous system. Bacteria, however, have developed several methods for handling toxic heavy metals: cation …

According to the 1997 Statistical Abstract of the United States, some 93 million Americans - 48.8% of the nation's adults - volunteered an average of 4.2 hours a week in 1995, donating time and talents to benefit various worthy causes. These "causes" ranged from churches to museums to schools, from private arrangements to national (even international) organizations. And the work, from building houses to holding hands to cleaning homes to answering tax questions, covered every possible talent and ability that volunteers had to offer.
Dinetic And Mechanistic Investigations Of Photocatalysis : Photoreactions Of Cr(Co)6 With Alkenes, Aaron E. Dietrich
Dinetic And Mechanistic Investigations Of Photocatalysis : Photoreactions Of Cr(Co)6 With Alkenes, Aaron E. Dietrich
Honors Theses
Flash photolysis has proven to be an effective technique for determining reaction mechanisms. Upon photolysis, a CO ligand is removed from Cr(CO)6 forming the reactive molecular fragment Cr(C0)5. In the presence of alkene, L, Cr(CO)s can react to form the meta-stable intermediate Cr(C0)5L. At high L concentrations, Cr(CO)5L decays by pseudo-first-order kinetics with an observed rate constant, kobs, which is dependent on the concentration of both L and added CO. The exar.t nature of the dependence provides insight into the mechanism of the decay of Cr(C0)5L and a plot of 1/kobs vs. [L] will give the rate constants for both …

Studies Directed Toward The Enantioselective Addition Of Reformatsky Reagents To Aldimines, Lamyaa Hassib
Honors Theses
Interest in β-amino esters and β-lactams has grown significantly due to their applications in the synthesis of compounds of pharmaceutical interest. Examples include β-lactam antibiotics such as the penicillin and carbapenem families. Because β-lactams and β-amino esters share a common pathway, methods to prepare either are often contaminated and thus complicated by the formation of the other. We have developed convenient and highly controllable method which can afford either product cleanly.

Continue With The Old Or Start Anew? An Examination Of Congressional Election Theories In The Context Of The 1946, 1948, 1994 And 1996 Elections, Elizabeth Ivry
Honors Theses
The differences in these election results raise several questions about the role and purpose of congressional elections in our democratic society. What factors could explain why two such similar elections, those of 1946 and 1994, were followed by two such different elections, those of 1948 and 1996? Has the relationship between congressional elections and congressional behaviors changed in the past 50 years? Are congressional elections still a referendum of the previous Congress and the incumbent presidency, or are other factors influencing the electorate's voting patterns? Were the midterm elections of 1946 and 1994 just extreme examples of what political scientists …
Molecular Design And Association Constants Of Nizatidine-Guest Complexes, Elizabeth Corbeil
Molecular Design And Association Constants Of Nizatidine-Guest Complexes, Elizabeth Corbeil
Honors Theses
Nizatidine, N-[2-[[[2-[(dimethylamino)metbyl]-4-thiazolyl]methyl]thio]ethyl]-N'methyl- 2-nitro-l,l-ethenediamine (Axid"), has been investigated for its potential to act as a host in guest-host complexes. Nizatidine binds with the guests through hydrogen bonding and pi-pi interactions. Guest-host studies were conducted using fluorescence quenching, calorimetry, NMR and invisible experiments. The lowest energy conformation of nizatidine is found to be U-shaped through theoretical calculations. Fluorescence experiments indicated that tryptophan and pyridoxine had large association constants. Further studies using calorimetry and NMR techniques concluded that no complexation had occurred. Complexation experiments have been done to find guests that complex with nizatidine. Caffeine, luminol, nicotinamide, phenylalanine, pyridoxine, pyrogallol, and tryptophan were …

Shrimp Aquaculture: An Analysis Of Its Evolution And Organization; And The Development Of A Shrimp Growth Model, Adam Rana
Honors Theses
This paper examines the impetus for the development and subsequent rise of the shrimp aquaculture industry and continues by exploring a model that seeks to improve shrimp farmers' harvests by identifying specific variables affecting shrimp growth. Evidence reviewed from 1980 through today suggest that technological advancements, reduced prices, and increases in both the supply and demand for shrimp are positively associated with the industry's rapid ascent. The introduction of vertically integrated shrimp farms along with the ability for shrimp farmers to differentiate their products are also correlated with the industry's growth. Variables affecting shrimp growth were also studied to determine …

Yoga Philosophy: Paths Of Actions And Knowledge, Ryan M. Wittekiend
Honors Theses
My focus in the following project is to examine and understand questions regarding how humankind should act and what we ought to strive to know through the context of the ancient Indian tradition of yoga philosophy. My ultimate goal is to understand the experience and role of the teachers who have the duty to guide the majority of us along the path of life and to examine the process of proper action and duty. I will carry out this investigation in four parts. First, I will examine the origins of spiritual and ritual thought explained in the ancient works of …
