The Suffolk Campaign A Case Study, Brian S. Wills Dec 1979

The Suffolk Campaign A Case Study, Brian S. Wills

Honors Theses

"the Suffolk Campaign: A Case Study," covers the Civil War that began on April 11, 1863 and ended on May 3, 1863 and centered around the small Tidewater Virginia town of Suffolk. Suffolk's strategic prominence was derived from its access to the James River, through tributary (the Nansemond), and two major railroads which ran through the town--the Petersburg and Norfolk, and the Roanoke and Seaboard. The Confederates abandoned the town after McClellan's Peninsula Campaign made their position their untenable. Federal troops quickly entered Suffolk and established it as the first line of defense for Norfolk. Suffolk came under the military …

Co2 Laser-Induced Decomposition Of Freon 113, Jeffrey Joseph Rusik Jun 1979

Co2 Laser-Induced Decomposition Of Freon 113, Jeffrey Joseph Rusik

Honors Theses

Gasgeous freon 113, or CC12FCC1F2, was irradiated with a continous wave carbon dioxide infared laser. The rat of formation of CF2CC1F, a decomposition product, was monitored using an infared spectrometer. The initial rates or product formation were related to irradiation wavelength and power, and the laser induced reaction was related to pyrolysis decomposition. A computer program which calculates the temperatures in a laser beam is modified and applied to the irradiations performed. It is determined that bi- or triphotonic absorption is occuring and that the laser induced reactions are photocatalyzed. A reaction model is discussed which combines thermal excitation, multiphotonic …

Ozonolysis Of Certain Alpha, Beta-Unsaturated Carbonyl Compounds, Alan Howard Wynn Jun 1979

Ozonolysis Of Certain Alpha, Beta-Unsaturated Carbonyl Compounds, Alan Howard Wynn

Honors Theses

One of the intermediates in the ozonolysis of alkynes is the α carbonyl carbonyl oxide. The Hull rearrangment mechanism suggests that the α carbonyl carbonyl oxide can then rearrange via a rotation and cuclization to an anhydride.

Synthesis Of Sterically Hindered Disasters, Richard A. Bankowitz Jun 1979

Synthesis Of Sterically Hindered Disasters, Richard A. Bankowitz

Honors Theses

This thesis examines the synthesis of two sterically hindered diesters, neopentyl glycol dipivaloate and ditert-butyl 2, 2-diethylmalonate. The implications of this hinderance for hydrolysis in basic medium are discussed. The neopentyl glycol diester of 2,2-dimethylpropanoic acid is prepared with little difficulty by reaction of the glycol with the acid chloride in the presence of pyridine. The process gives the desired ester in approximately 66% yield. The preparation of the ditert-butyl ester of diethylmalonic acid is also attempted by means of the acid chloride in the presence of pyridine. Preparation of the diethylmalonyl dichloride using acetonitrile as a solvent in most …

These results aer compared with work on previously studied gold complexes.

Calculation Of Mono-Cyclic Molecular Structures Using Mindo/3, Peter Mark Felker Jun 1979

Calculation Of Mono-Cyclic Molecular Structures Using Mindo/3, Peter Mark Felker

Honors Theses

Molecular geometries of selected, small cyclic compounds were calculated using the semi-epirical, S.C.F. molecular orbital method MINDO/3. Calculated geometries are compared with experiemental values to determine MINDO/3's effectiveness. It is found that the method has several systematic deficiencies. In Particular, carbon-oxygen single bond distances are calculated to be too short.

Study Of Cndo/2 For The Prediction Of Geometries Of Phosphorus-Containing Molecules, Mark A. Fraser

Honors Theses

The method of CNDO/2 is presently being used to study the mechanisms of hydrolysis of phosphate esters. The question, therefore, arises whether or not CNDO/2 can accurately predict the geometries of phosphorus containing molecules. Using an optimizer adapted from the method of Rosenbrock, 41 compounds were tested.

Examination Of The Acid Etching Process Used In Preventative Dentistry, Robert Charles Morgan Jun 1979

Examination Of The Acid Etching Process Used In Preventative Dentistry, Robert Charles Morgan

Honors Theses

Nuva-Seal is a bisphenol-A-glycidyl-methacrylate monomer which in its polymerized form seals a tooth to prevent carie formation. Prior to application the tooth surface is pretreated with an etching solution to increase the bond strength. The etchant solution is 50% by weight H3PO4 and 7% by weight Zn0. Previous investigations preformed at Union College have determined qualitatively that a substantial portion of enamel is removed by the acid pretreatment. In addition, an extensive literature search into the development of the etching process was performed in order to validate or repute its usefulness.

The Development And Growth Of The Richmond Symphony, Elaine Susan Mccauley May 1979

The Development And Growth Of The Richmond Symphony, Elaine Susan Mccauley

Honors Theses

In this paper, I have attempted to explain the administrative and financial operations of the Richmond Symphony. The first two chapters are meant to serve as an introduction to the Richmond Symphony, and they help explain the circumstances leading the development of the present Symphony. Also, much emphasis has been placed on the expansion of the Symphony since 1957.

Since the purpose of this paper is to examine the financial status of the Richmond Symphony, I found it beneficial to compare the Richmond Symphony to other American orchestras with similar budgets. From this research, it is evident that the Richmond …

The topics covered include the process of entering an institution, the problems of institutional living, the types of programs available in institutions, the process of leaving an institution, and some possible improvements in institutional life. These topics are studied by researching the current literature on aging that deals with institutionalization. From the research, it appears that the elderly have many special …

Cultural Barbarism And The Romantic Ideal An Analysis Of Three Cases Of Hero-Worship In 19th Century Germany, Gregory R. Chemnitz Apr 1979

Cultural Barbarism And The Romantic Ideal An Analysis Of Three Cases Of Hero-Worship In 19th Century Germany, Gregory R. Chemnitz

Honors Theses

The 19th century produced numerous intellectual currents which were expressions of an incompatibility with the modern age. In reaction to the emergence of a now, urban, petty bourgeois world the 19th century intellectual of ten assumed the role of a prophet, warning of the decadent course of history while portraying an ideal form of existence which could eventually be achieved. One manifestation of this expression of dissent was Romanticism, and especially German Romanticism. In Germany there arose a passionate outcry for the internal purification of man and the return to an earlier condition. Associated with this was the worship of …

The Ghost Of Malthus, Steve Emmert Apr 1979

The Ghost Of Malthus, Steve Emmert

Honors Theses

No discussion of population can being and end with the examination of historical data, perhaps combined with some extrapolation of past trends into the future. Equally suspect would be an treatise which ignored these issues. In few disciplines will one find historical trends as striking as that of population growth.

The Stylistic Characteristics Of Selected A Cappella Choral Works Of Ralph Vaughan Williams, James Bennighof Apr 1979

The Stylistic Characteristics Of Selected A Cappella Choral Works Of Ralph Vaughan Williams, James Bennighof

Honors Theses

Several factors were originally influential in my selection of this topic for study. First, I was interested in Ralph Vaughan Williams' music and his compositional style. Secondly, I had both an interest in and a certain degree of familiarity as a performer with the areas of choral music and folk music. Finally, Vaughan Williams' short a cappella choral works lent themselves well to investigation, because they had not received much study previously, and because they presented a homogeneous corpus of works which was appropriate for this type of survey.

The Recombinant Dna Debate, Richard E. Brown Jan 1979

The Recombinant Dna Debate, Richard E. Brown

Honors Theses

The questions surrounding the recombinant DNA research debate are not just questions of technique and safety. They involve the driving forces of scientific research, especially those premises and presuppositions concerning the expansion of knowledge versus our ability to use that knowledge wisely. Basically, we ask if policy--scientific, industrial, or political--should be an integral part of our future steps in recombinant DNA research and development.

It is obvious from past mistakes involving pollution, waste of fossil fuels, and over-mechanization that we must try to avoid the crucial tendency that technology has of overrunning common sense and moral guidelines. This is especially …

A Study On Gaseous Ebullitions Of De Gray Reservoir, Arkansas, David Pinkston Jan 1979

A Study On Gaseous Ebullitions Of De Gray Reservoir, Arkansas, David Pinkston

Honors Theses

This study was undertaken in order to determine the nature of and the factors that influence the gaseous ebullitions of De Gray Reservoir near Arkadelphia, Arkansas during a yearly cycle.

Two major types of gaseous ebullition are described in the literature. The first has to do with the production and ebullition of elemental oxygen from photosynthesis (Porcella et al., 1975). Hutchinson (1957) predicts that the formation of oxygen bubbles in this manner is limited to very shallow, well lighted, warm waters.

The second type of gaseous ebullition involves the anaerobic digestion of organic matter (Reeburgh, 1969). Anaerobic conditions exist in …

The Psychological And Rehabilitative Aspects Of Cerebrovascular Accidents, Jeanette Given Jan 1979

The Psychological And Rehabilitative Aspects Of Cerebrovascular Accidents, Jeanette Given

Honors Theses

Cerebrovascular accidents (CVA), commonly known as strokes, are the third main cause of death in America, with 200,000 deaths occurring each year ("Seven Hopeful Facts about Stroke," 1969). But not everyone dies as a result of a stroke. There are approximately 1 1/2 million people living in the United States who have had a stroke, and over 600,000 will be stroke victims this year ("Body Language"). Many of these people will be disabled and suffer various adverse side effects as a result of the stroke. CVA is the number one crippler in North America, with two million people becoming disabled …

Child Neglect, Katherine Earle Jan 1979

Child Neglect, Katherine Earle

Honors Theses

The constant change, fast pace, urbanization, and mobilization of our society has propagated the creation of many new and marvelous inventions. However, the waste products of increased individual stress and discontent have, in turn, created an atmosphere conducive to such things as child abuse and child neglect. It may not be determined if abuse and neglect are more prevalent now than in the past, but fortunately they are being more frequently reported, the first step in correcting the situation. Recently the issue of child abuse has been widely discussed and has come to the attention of the community and the …

The Measurement Of Self-Preoccupation, Steven W. Noles Jan 1979

The Measurement Of Self-Preoccupation, Steven W. Noles

Honors Theses

In recent years, there has been an increasing amount of interest in research on the extent and manner in which a person views him/herself in various settings. Some refer to this as self-preoccupation (Sarason, 1975, 1978; Wine, 1971), while others call it self-awareness, a state (Duval and Wicklund, 1972) or self-consciousness, a trait, (Buss and Scheier, 1976). It has been hypothesized that human consciousness is bidirectional; that is, it can be focused inward to the self or outward to the external environment (Bandura, 1977). There is some research and theory that suggests that the focus of this attention, influences the …

Jealousy As A Function Of Self Preoccupation And Styles Of Loving, Teresa L. Johnston, Matt E. Jaremko Jan 1979

Jealousy As A Function Of Self Preoccupation And Styles Of Loving, Teresa L. Johnston, Matt E. Jaremko

Honors Theses

The present study was done to investigate jealousy as a function of styles of loving and self preoccupation. It was hypothesized that a high self preoccupied person would tend to be more jealous than a low self preoccupied person. This hypothesis could be supported by the accepted definition of a self preoccupied person. In other words, because the self preoccupied person is self-centered, he would probably be more jealous than the low self preoccupied person who is other-centered. Furthermore, it might also be hypothesized that persons who define love in manic or ludic terms would express more jealousy than would …

An Insight Into Management Development Programs, Bretta A. Tulbert Jan 1979

An Insight Into Management Development Programs, Bretta A. Tulbert

Honors Theses

Management development can be defined as any form of training for managers to improve present job performance while preparing them for advancement into higher positions. It involves any attempt by a manager to improve his position by the acquisition of new knowledge, skills, and attitudes in an orderly manner. Management development involves more than a series of presentations; it is a growing process which develops both general and specific interest. This is the responsibility of the company and the individual. The programs should include continuous feedback of results, development of individual career plans, and application of executive development techniques.

A Correlational Analysis Of Suggestibility, Self Preoccupation, Styles Of Loving, And Sensation Seeking, Teresa L. Johnston, Matt E. Jaremko Jan 1979

A Correlational Analysis Of Suggestibility, Self Preoccupation, Styles Of Loving, And Sensation Seeking, Teresa L. Johnston, Matt E. Jaremko

Honors Theses

A number of personality inventories and psychometric measures have been recently introduced to the psychological literature that attempt to measure concepts that have received little empirical scrutiny. Among these are scales to measure response suggestibility (Wilson & Barber, 1976), self-preoccupation (Noles & Jaremko, 1979) and styles of loving (Lasswell & Lasswell, 1976). This paper describes a study of the interrelationships of these measures with a well established personality measure, sensation seeking (Zuckerman, 1978) It is hoped that information on the correlations of these scales will suggest possible directions for future research and theory concerning these constructs.
