Nikolai Medtner's Fairy Tales As Shakespearean Adaptation, Alicia Wodarski Dec 2013

Nikolai Medtner's Fairy Tales As Shakespearean Adaptation, Alicia Wodarski

Honors Projects

Though in the past the piano music of the early twentieth century Russian composer Nikolai Medtner had been largely forgotten, there has been a recent trend among some U. S. pianists to bring his pieces into the popular canon. Contemporary pianists have particularly focused on his works known as the Skazki, or “Fairy Tales,” of which Medtner wrote several sets. Medtner’s fairytales are of the programmatic genre; they invoke connections outside of the music itself. While Medtner’s pieces have received attention due to their musical qualities, there has not been much research regarding their place as a musical form of …

Determining A Developmental Window For The Effect Of Polychlorinated Biphenyl (Pcb) On Ultrasonic Vo, Hannah Duffy Dec 2013

Determining A Developmental Window For The Effect Of Polychlorinated Biphenyl (Pcb) On Ultrasonic Vo, Hannah Duffy

Honors Projects

Commercial manufacturing and widespread use of polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) in the United States has left lasting negative effects today. These persistent contaminants continue to bioaccumulate in the food web because of their stable structure, long half-life, and high lipophilicity. Adding PCB to the diet of Sprague-Dawley rats during pregnancy and lactation alters the thyroid status of offspring, and the behavior of the dams and pups. To determine a critical period or “window” of development with the greatest impact of PCB exposure of females on offspring fitness, female Sprague-Dawley rats were mated and fed PCB diet (25 ppm PCB 47 and …

The Effects Of Histone And Glycosaminoglycans On Human Factor Xa And Antithrombin Iii Interactions, Amy Thomas Dec 2013

The Effects Of Histone And Glycosaminoglycans On Human Factor Xa And Antithrombin Iii Interactions, Amy Thomas

Honors Projects

Heparin and protamine have been found neutralize each other such that the anticoagulant effects of both compounds are not observed. In the present study, the effects of histone and glycosaminoglycans on the formation and degradation of the 1°Xaα-ATIII complex to the 3°Xaβ-ATIII complex are explored. In the presence of histone, there is a dramatic drop in the levels of 1°Xa-ATIII complexes and an increase in the levels of 3°Xa-ATIII complexes, measured relative to the control, indicating the effect of histone to promote the degradation of the 1°Xa-ATIII complexes. Heparin alone moderately reduces levels of the 1°Xa-ATIII complexes and the 3°Xaα-ATIII …

The Functionality Of The Tonb System Across The Transduction Pathway, Lindsey Marie Butterfield Dec 2013

The Functionality Of The Tonb System Across The Transduction Pathway, Lindsey Marie Butterfield

Honors Projects

The transport process at the outer membrane of gram negative bacteria, Escherichia coli, is influenced by the TonB protein. The TonB protein energizes transport trough specific outer membrane proteins that are involved in iron uptake. It does this by using the energy that is collected from the ion electrochemical gradient of the cytoplasmic membrane, by complexes of ExbB and ExbD proteins. The functions of this system involve a set of poorly understood interactions between TonB, ExbB, ExbD, and the outer membrane transporters. Modifying the amino terminus of ExbB produces a drastic effect that is seen during energy transduction for transport …

Her Last Seed, Brittany Edwards

Honors Projects

This project is a children's story about anti-bullying aimed at an audience of fourth or fifth grade students. The intent of the project is to present students with a relatable account of the negative and destructive effects bullying can have on those involved. Ideally, the book would be read and thought through as a class, and then expanded upon as part of a larger unit on bullying/anti-bullying. It is for this reason that I also included discussion questions and extension activities at the end of the text to facilitate post-reading discussions.

The Role Of Competition And Patient Travel In Hospital Profits: Why Health Insurers Should Subsidize Patient Travel, Joseph S. Durgin May 2013

The Role Of Competition And Patient Travel In Hospital Profits: Why Health Insurers Should Subsidize Patient Travel, Joseph S. Durgin

Honors Projects

This paper explores the effects of patient travel distance on hospital profit margins, with consideration to the effects of travel subsidies on hospital pricing. We develop a model in which hospital agglomeration leads to a negative relationship between profit margins and patient travel distance, challenging the standard IO theory that profit margins are higher for firms with greater distances of customer travel. Using data on patient visits and hospital finances from the California Office of Statewide Health Planning and Development (OSHPD), we test our theory and confirm that a hospital tends to have less pricing power if it draws patients …

From Left To Right? White Evangelical Politicization, Gop Incorporation, And The Effect Of Party Affiliation On Group Opinion Change, Devon B. Shapiro

Honors Projects

While most white evangelicals in America have advocated moral, cultural, and social conservatism since the Founding, the group’s fiscal and social welfare preferences have been more volatile. Early 20th century evangelicals tended to be socially conservative, fiscally liberal, and, to the extent that they were politicized, mostly Democratic partisans. Since that time, not only have white evangelicals abandoned the Democratic Party, but also they have largely become fiscal and social welfare conservatives. I attempt to explain that transformation. I first examine the dynamics of white evangelical politicization and GOP incorporation, providing social and historical context to the political and …

Plasmon-Exciton Interactions In All-Inorganic Nanocrystal Arrays, Alexa Johnson Apr 2013

Plasmon-Exciton Interactions In All-Inorganic Nanocrystal Arrays, Alexa Johnson

Honors Projects

Weak coupling regimes between metallic nanoparticles and semiconductor quantum dots have been shown to increase efficiency in quantum dot solar cells by 80%. This phenomenon is also known to scale up non-linearly. Increasing the efficiency of solar cells with the use of plasmon-exciton coupling will help solar cells to become competitive with other energy sources. Another weakness of current quantum dot solar cells is the thermal, chemical, and electrical instability that ligand-terminated nanocrystals are subject to. Our new SMENA encapsulation matrix increases thermal stability of the nanocrystal array by using large band-gap semiconductor shells to cap the exciton generating core. …
