An Analysis Of Voter Turnout In Cuyahoga County, 1840-1860, Jean M. Anderson

Honors Papers

Political historians have traditionally been more interested in leaders than followers. But with the emergence of the 'new' political history, American historians began to explore the party bases of the American political structure. Historians such as Lee Benson, Richard Jensen. Paul Kleppner, Samuel McSeveney, and Ronald Formisano have written case studies of major shifts in the political parties during the middle and late nineteenth century. According to their research, the roots of American political partisanship grew out of the diverse ethnic, cultural, and religious identities of the voting populace.

Benson's pathbreaking investigation of New York voters in the 1844 election …

The Feasibility Of Using Thermography To Detect Subsurface Voids In Painted Wooden Panels, Bruce Frederick Miller Jan 1976

The Feasibility Of Using Thermography To Detect Subsurface Voids In Painted Wooden Panels, Bruce Frederick Miller

Honors Papers

Thermography is a technique whereby the structure or condition of an object is studied by means of precisely measuring temperature variations over the surfaces of the object. The research which is described in this thesis was undertaken to determine whether thermographic techniques could be applied to the field of art conservation to detect subsurface voids within painted wooden panels. It must be stressed, however, that this research was carried out as a feasibility study with no attempt being made to establish or refine a technique that could be immediately applied to the examination of works of art.

The U.S. - U.S.S.R. Nuclear Balance: Present And Future, Bruce Levinson

Honors Papers

The purpose of this paper will be to arrive at some sort of understanding about the real importance of nuclear weapons in the hands of the U.S. and the U.S.S.R., something which has not been done heretofore in as skilled a fashion as is possible. There are a number of reasons for this, some of which are worth looking into because of the impact they have had on the actual policies of the United States.

The Effect Of Failure On Self-Concept, Merle Sprinzen Jan 1976

The Effect Of Failure On Self-Concept, Merle Sprinzen

Honors Papers

This paper explores the effects of failure on an individual's self-concept. A model based on symbolic interaction and attribution theories, among others, is elaborated to predict how an individual's self-concept will be affected by failure situations. It is argued that where the individual chooses to attribute causality for failure in the situation will determine the effects of that failure on his self-concept, unless the individual's belief system modifies the attribution process. This attribution is related to one major individual difference: a person's generalized expectancy for control. It is hypothesized that an individual's predisposition to conceive of causality as deriving from …

British Military Thinking, 1902-1914, Lawrence R. Maxted Jan 1976

British Military Thinking, 1902-1914, Lawrence R. Maxted

Honors Papers

The twelve years between the end of the Boer War (1899-1902) and August 1914 were a period of military reform for Britain. As a result of Army errors and deficiencies, the military came under criticism and ultimately reform. The Army was transformed from an unwieldy conglomeration of units into an expandable striking force ready for overseas service. Though the Navy had not been involved in the South African fighting, its defects were readily apparent in the light of postwar reform. So too were those of high level military policy making which was then revamped through the creation of the Committee …
