The Role Of Hearing Health Care Education On The Perceptions And Knowledge About Hearing Loss Among African American Adults, Sherise Garmon, Kasey Twine

Honors Capstones

Hearing loss negatively impacts a person's quality of life. Only 20% of 46 million Americans with hearing loss seek amplification treatment. It is imperative to address the disparity within the general public between those who have hearing loss and those who seek treatment for hearing loss. The goal of this research project is to determine whether education, through in-person presentations, can be used to improve their knowledge on hearing loss. Sixty African Americans between 50 and 90 years of age participated in the study. Participants were given a pre-presentation questionnaire, followed by a presentation was that discussed: the types and …

Using Environmental Dna To Detect The Presence Of Blanding's Turtle (Emydoidea Blandingii), Amber Stedman Jan 2013

Using Environmental Dna To Detect The Presence Of Blanding's Turtle (Emydoidea Blandingii), Amber Stedman

Honors Capstones

Blanding’s turtle (Emydoidea blandingii) has been designated as threatened or endangered throughout a large portion of its range largely due to destruction and degradation of wetland and terrestrial habitat. More precise knowledge of locations where Blanding’s turtles are found would greatly aid efforts to protect this species. Unfortunately, Blanding’s turtles can be difficult to observe or trap, making detection difficult. Instead, environmental DNA (eDNA) collected from an aquatic habitat may be utilized as a cost and time-effective alternative to determine whether E. blandingii have recently occupied a given locale. For this study, we designed species-specific primers to amplify a 219 …

There's No Valley So Sweet : Market Development In The Lower Fox Valley River Region, 1833-1852, Wayne Duerkes

Honors Capstones

The research examines the development of the market economy in the region which encompasses southern DeKalb and northern LaSalle County from 1833 to 1852. The region’s history has been the domain of local history buffs' tales, or it has been relegated to a sideshow of Chicago, or a mere footnote in the state history. In large part, the complexity of the region begins with its geographic location at the confluence of the Fox and Illinois rivers. The location’s market, originally thought to have preferential economic ties to St. Louis during the pre-railroad era, was actually an economic battleground for commercial …

An Analysis Of The Dodd-Frank Act And Its Impact On Community Banks, Amy N. Rivers Jan 2013

An Analysis Of The Dodd-Frank Act And Its Impact On Community Banks, Amy N. Rivers

Honors Capstones

Since its passage, the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act has grown to over 8,000 pages of proposed and final rules and regulations. For any bank, compliance with that volume is a challenge, but for a small bank, it can have far-reaching consequences. This project analyzes possible effects of the Dodd-Frank Act on financial services providers, specifically Main Street banks, otherwise known as community banks. In an effort to create a safer and more stable financial institutional environment, the Dodd- Frank Act added levels of regulation never seen since the Great Depression. This level of regulation can have …

Comparative Analysis Of English Language Learners' Experiences In Public School At The Third And Eighth Grade Levels, Amanda Lenox, Kristin Liewald

Honors Capstones

The field of education is one that endeavors constant change of fluctuating degrees. Most recently and drastically, the educational field has experienced and responded to changes in the cultural and linguistic diversity that is rapidly increasing in classrooms across the United States. Congruently, current legislation holds both educators and students accountable for their standardized performance and accomplishments, although teachers of ethnically diverse students are not required to be certified in the teaching of these learners. As a result, it was the purpose of this study to identify and analyze the themes evident from a series of observations and interviews conducted …

Comparing The Length Of Maternal Verbal Initiations With The Length Of Maternal Verbal Responses, Rachel Harris

Honors Capstones

The current study examined if the length of maternal verbal initiations and maternal verbal responses were different. Thirty-one 13-month-old infants interacted with their mothers for six minutes while experimenters observed and videotaped from an adjacent room. Mothers were given a standard toy set and asked to play as they typically would. Videos of the mother-infant dyads were transcribed in SALT and mothers’ verbal initiations and verbal responses during the play session were identified. Maternal verbalresponses were further categorized as responses to infant vocalizations, responses to infant verbalizations, maternal imitative responses, and maternal non-imitative responses. Mothers’ verbal initiations were significantly longer …

Examining The Political Rhetoric Of American Presidential Candidates, Helen Park

Honors Capstones

This research is an attempt to deconstruct and discern the patterns that have emerged from within the rhetoric that is reserved for presidential candidates. I examined three potential candidates for the upcoming 2016 presidential elections: Hillary Clinton, Chris Christie, and Marco Rubio. All three candidates are vastly differ from one another in terms of gender, race, and physical appearance. However, the root of my research will be to determine why does the media sexualize and discriminate women and then apply it within a political parameter. Within my research, the coding proponent revealed four categories that would be appropriate in examining …

Latinos Advancing Education, Maricruz Díaz Jan 2013

Latinos Advancing Education, Maricruz Díaz

Honors Capstones

The many reasons behind the decision of migrating from one country to another included the chance of obtaining greater opportunities with hope of a better life. Most importantly, my parents' decision to migrate from one country to another was taken upon the ambition of wanting their children to become educated since they believed that becoming educated was the way to progress in life. In today's society, obtaining a high school education has become insufficient for success. Now' days, if someone wants to be successful in life and earn more than just minimum wage, much more than a high school diploma …

The Impact Of Living In A Mixed-Status Family On K-12 Students, Allison Mass Jan 2013

The Impact Of Living In A Mixed-Status Family On K-12 Students, Allison Mass

Honors Capstones

The Impact of Living in a Mixed-Status Family on K-12 Students is important because itexamines a serious issue confronting today’s schools— the experiences and needs of students living in mixed-status families, which are often not considered by educators. The significant number of students in today’s schools who are either undocumented themselves or directly impacted by a parent who is undocumented calls on teachers and administrators, regardless of their personal beliefs on immigration, to learn about the needs of these students, the challenges they face, and what can be done to help them. This is a review of the current literature …

Screening Of Chemical Libraries In Search Of Inhibitors Of Aflatoxin Biosynthesis, Justin Durancik Jan 2013

Screening Of Chemical Libraries In Search Of Inhibitors Of Aflatoxin Biosynthesis, Justin Durancik

Honors Capstones

Aspergillus nidulans is a filamentous fungus and model organism for other Aspergillus species, such as A. flavus. A. flavus and some other Aspergillus species produce a toxin known as aflatoxin. This compound is a carcinogenic secondary metabolite produced by these organisms. A. nidulans is often used to study this pathway because it presents a conserved biosyntheticpathway that leads to the production of the related mycotoxin sterigmatocystin (ST). For my project, I have searched for chemicals that disrupt the activation of the biosynthetic pathway responsible for producing aflatoxin. Specifically, I screened for chemicals that inhibit the nuclear VeA-LaeA protein-protein interaction. This …

Education, Memory, And Solidarity : The Effect Of Advancements In Music Delivery And Sharing On The Role Of 20th And 21st Century Protest Music, Dave Anians

Honors Capstones

This paper works to answer the question of how advances in the technology of music delivery and sharing (such as radio, records, the internet) affect the role of music in American social movements. This is done first by defining the role of music in social movements as the providing of three services in the name of a movement: education, solidarity, and memory. The thesis of this work is that advancements in music delivery and sharing have the potential to affect the role of music in social movements, but these three services remain. This thesis is tested by analyzing the history …

Apparel Designed For The Convenience And Ease Of Handicapped And Disabled Consumers, Nicole Perrella

Honors Capstones

The problem I am addressing with this capstone is the lack of fashionable, adaptive clothing. My purpose with this capstone is to introduce adaptive apparel for people who are disabled to be able to dress themselves, or to make it easier for people to help them dress, that is also trendy. My research started with seeing what kinds of adaptive clothing, if any, was already out there (secondary research). Then I took my own disability experiences and interviewed my friend about her brother’s disability for primary research. Then I took what I learned from my research and created a small …

Nursing as a whole is a very stressful occupation to go into. From the pre-requisite classes one needs to take to even have a chance of getting into a nursing program; to the many clinical and classes that are required within nursing school, it is just a stressful school atmosphere as a whole. Then one needs to begin preparing for a national board exam that will basically dictate the rest of their life. Plus adding on family commitments, work life, and attempts for a bit of fun, it can all be very trying and consuming to an individual. It is …

Sharing Experiences Of People With Disabilities, Chelsea Most Jan 2013

Sharing Experiences Of People With Disabilities, Chelsea Most

Honors Capstones

Growing up with a brother who has disabilities has not always been easy. But I cannot imagine what life has been like for him, or anyone else who has a disability for that matter. Not many people realize what people with disabilities go through every single day of their lives. People with disabilities are often seen as being insignificant and irrelevant. This could not be more untrue. I wanted to work with Dr. Greg Long on this project to further this point. When talking to Dr. Long, I found out his end goal was to make multiple short videos containing …

Employment For All : Disability's Place In The Workforce, Mary Claire Schibelka

Honors Capstones

As a special educator, it is one’s goal to ensure that students are as successful after high school as possible. This means that teachers are responsible for making sure their students have appropriate social, functional, and daily living skills by the time they graduate, as well as a plan for what each will do once they are out of high school. One of the main concerns of special education teachers is whether or not students with disabilities will become employed after they graduate. Unfortunately, people with disabilities have the lowest employment rate out of every minority group in the United …
