With dynamic economic and social changes, increasing pressure is exerted on natural resources management. Agricultural land resources particularly face growing pressure of conversion to non-agricultural uses from population and development demands for land. The continual conversion of agricultural land may have implications in terms of the loss of prime farmland, irreversible landscape changes, deteriorating environmental quality, and interference with rural lifestyles. This study models urban sprawl on agricultural land in a growth equilibrium modeling approach where the population-employment simultaneous equations system is estimated using two-stages-least-squares while changes in agricultural land is estimated using OLS on West Virginia data. The purpose of this study was to describe methods of value-added processing being employed by farmers in West Virginia, the amount of interest in value-added processing as expressed by agriculture extension agents and farmers, and identified the number of value-added producers in West Virginia. The population targeted with the initial survey consisted of 28 agriculture extension agents in West Virginia representing 55 counties. The second telephone survey was directed to value-added producers within the state. From this data, four farms, Thistledew Farm, Kelly Smith, Headwater Farms and Higson's Farm, were chosen to participate in case studies. Value-added producers were identified …

This dissertation will focus on the relationship between trade and the environment. We will analyze this from three angles. First, we explore the effect of trade liberalization on a country's environmental regulations at global level. Secondly, we focus on trade and political integration process at the regional level and how it affects block members environmental policies.
