Simulated Annealing Heuristics For The Dynamic Facility Layout Problem, Saravanan Kuppusamy Dec 2001

Simulated Annealing Heuristics For The Dynamic Facility Layout Problem, Saravanan Kuppusamy

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports

Today's consumer market demands that manufacturers must be competitive. This requires the efficient operation of manufacturing plants and their ability to quickly respond to changes in product mix and demand. Studies show that material handling cost makes up between 20 and 50 percent of the total operating cost. Therefore, this thesis considers the problem of arranging and rearranging (when there are changes in product mix and demand) manufacturing facilities such that material handling and rearrangement costs are minimized. This problem is called the dynamic facility layout problem. In this thesis, three simulated annealing heuristics are presented for the dynamic facility …

Fuzzy Logic Cost Estimation Method For High Production Volume Components, Shirley Jean Copen Dec 2001

Fuzzy Logic Cost Estimation Method For High Production Volume Components, Shirley Jean Copen

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports

The purpose of this research is to develop fuzzy logic cost models that estimate the cost of a component based on the component's geometric shape, size, material and manufacturing process. The research is focused on components made from high production quantity processes i.e. stamping, injection molding, rolling and extrusion. However, the method may also be used for other types of manufacturing processes. The method is useful to both engineers and cost estimators whenever an estimated cost is desired. Engineers and cost estimators may use the method to obtain the cost of components or products of similar design without a detailed …

Development Of Environmental Health And Safety Database For Small Communities, Ragava S. Nadig Dec 2001

Development Of Environmental Health And Safety Database For Small Communities, Ragava S. Nadig

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports

The National Environmental Services Center (NESC) is a group of programs, national in scope, that provide a variety of environmental services directly to small community officials, engineers, technicians, regulatory officials, and private citizens.;The primary mission of each of the NESC programs is to protect public health and the environment of America's small and rural communities-those communities of less than 10,000 people. The NESC programs provide information, technical assistance, and training to help small communities deal with their wastewater, drinking water, and solid waste treatment issues.;Thousands of informational materials pass through the organization each year. This material ranges from manufacturing product …

Static And Dynamic Inventory Models Under Inflation, Time Value Of Money And Permissible Delay In Payment, Babak Khorrami Aug 2001

Static And Dynamic Inventory Models Under Inflation, Time Value Of Money And Permissible Delay In Payment, Babak Khorrami

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports

In this research a number of mathematical models were developed for static and dynamic deterministic single-item inventory systems. Economic factors such as inflation, time value of money and permissible delay in payment were considered in developing the models. Nonlinear optimization techniques were used to obtain the optimal policies for the systems.;First, a static single-item inventory model was considered in which shortages are allowed and a delay is permitted in payment. In this case, suppliers allow the customers to settle their accounts after a fixed delay period during which no interest is charged.;An extension of the model was then considered in …

Effects Of Work Stoppages At Selected Steel Mills On Production And Safety Systems, Daniel Hartley May 2001

Effects Of Work Stoppages At Selected Steel Mills On Production And Safety Systems, Daniel Hartley

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports

The purpose of this research was to identify if there was a significant difference between the OSHA recordable incidence rates at a selected steel manufacturer prior to a major work stoppage and subsequent to the work stoppage. Monthly and quarterly time periods were evaluated to determine the level of change that occurred between prior and post work stoppage periods. Raw steel production was also evaluated to determine the effects of the work stoppage on production totals. OSHA recordable incidence rates were generally lower after the work stoppage, while production totals were higher after the work stoppage. In many instances the …

Scheduling Flexible Flowshops With Sequence -Dependent Setup Times, Kanchana Sethanan May 2001

Scheduling Flexible Flowshops With Sequence -Dependent Setup Times, Kanchana Sethanan

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports

This dissertation addresses the scheduling problem in a flexible flowshop with sequence-dependent setup times. The production line consists of S production stages, each of which may have more than one non-identical (uniform) machines. Prior to processing a job on a machine at the first stage, a setup time from idling is needed. Also sequence dependent setup times (SDST) are considered on each machine in each stage. The objective of this research is to minimize the makespan. A mathematical model was developed for small size problems and two heuristic algorithms (Flexible Flowshop with Sequence Dependent Setup Times Heuristic (FFSDSTH) and Tabu …

Software Tool For Reliability Estimation, Manish Jhunjhunwala May 2001

Software Tool For Reliability Estimation, Manish Jhunjhunwala

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports

Reliability engineering is now an essential part of product development. In the area of electronics, reliability needs to be checked for each critical component before the product is shipped. Electronic products can range from computers to pace makers.;Over the years, several tools have been developed to estimate hardware/software reliability. Typically, such tools are either for hardware or software. This thesis presents a Software Tool for Reliability Estimation (STORE), which can be used for hardware components, software components, and for systems having both hardware and software components.;The objective of this research was to study several hardware-software reliability models, existing algorithms to …
