Changes In Water Quality In Deckers Creek From 1974 To 2000, Jason Allen Stewart Dec 2001

Changes In Water Quality In Deckers Creek From 1974 To 2000, Jason Allen Stewart

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports

The Deckers Creek drainage basin covers approximately 16,600 hectares (62.9 square miles) in Monongalia and Preston Counties of West Virginia. Throughout the twentieth century, this watershed has received high levels of pollution in several forms. A 1974 study examined the water chemistry in Deckers Creek over a six-month period at 29 sample points. Water samples from the same sites were collected and analyzed monthly from March 1999 through October 2000 for acidity, alkalinity, total iron, aluminum, manganese, and other metals, as well as for fecal coliform and fecal streptococcus concentrations. Most of the tributaries sampled in 1999--2000 showed reduced metal …

Exploring Object-Oriented Gis For Watershed Resource Management, Nalishebo Nally Kaunda Dec 2001

Exploring Object-Oriented Gis For Watershed Resource Management, Nalishebo Nally Kaunda

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports

The adoption of object-oriented programming for spatial technological advancement is an emerging trend in GIS. This research seeks to explore Object-Oriented GIS (OOGIS) and its potential application in watershed resource management. OOGIS provides a more intuitive and realistic abstraction of real world features as intelligent objects. The ability to embed behavior, geometry, and attribution with the objects provides considerable advantages in the processing and analysis of geospatial data. The main objective of this research was to design a prototype OOGIS for watershed resource management using the object relational Arclnfo 8.1 Geodatabase. The study builds on the OOGIS concepts of inheritance, …

Spatial And Temporal Analysis Of Radial Growth In An Appalachian Watershed, Desta Beyene Fekedulegn Dec 2001

Spatial And Temporal Analysis Of Radial Growth In An Appalachian Watershed, Desta Beyene Fekedulegn

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports

This dendrochronological study used dated and measured tree-ring data to examine relationships between radial growth and climate for four hard wood species, yellow-poplar, northern red oak, chestnut oak and red maple, growing on contrasting topographic aspects of a watershed in north-central West Virginia.;The study showed that all species except northern red oak showed significant differences in growth between the mesic and xeric aspects. Where significant differences were found all except chestnut oak exhibited higher growth rates at the mesic aspect.;Yellow-poplar showed a sharp decline in growth from late 1950's to late 1960's, which was evidently caused by several years of …

Development Of Environmental Health And Safety Database For Small Communities, Ragava S. Nadig Dec 2001

Development Of Environmental Health And Safety Database For Small Communities, Ragava S. Nadig

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports

The National Environmental Services Center (NESC) is a group of programs, national in scope, that provide a variety of environmental services directly to small community officials, engineers, technicians, regulatory officials, and private citizens.;The primary mission of each of the NESC programs is to protect public health and the environment of America's small and rural communities-those communities of less than 10,000 people. The NESC programs provide information, technical assistance, and training to help small communities deal with their wastewater, drinking water, and solid waste treatment issues.;Thousands of informational materials pass through the organization each year. This material ranges from manufacturing product …

Large -Eddy Simulation Of A Three-Dimensional Compressible Tornado Vortex, Jianjun Xia Dec 2001

Large -Eddy Simulation Of A Three-Dimensional Compressible Tornado Vortex, Jianjun Xia

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports

Large-Eddy simulation (LES) has become a very useful tool for investigating tornadoes, one of the more spectacular and destructive phenomena of nature. A new three-dimensional, unsteady, compressible model is generated to determine how significant the differences between compressible and incompressible LES simulations may be in some extremely violent tornadoes. In particular, this study seeks to determine how high the Mach number within the tornado may become before significant changes occur due to compressibility, and what the major effects of these changes may be expected to be.;After developing and verifying the compressible LES model, three different patterns of tornadic corner flows …

Characterization And Quality Of Soils Developing On A Mountaintop Removal Coal Mine, Kevin Alfred Thomas Dec 2001

Characterization And Quality Of Soils Developing On A Mountaintop Removal Coal Mine, Kevin Alfred Thomas

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports

Mountaintop surface mining for coal has been practiced in West Virginia for over three decades, but its environmental impacts have become increasingly scrutinized in recent years. Therefore, this study evaluated soil development on different aged mined lands. Four different ages (2, 7, 11, and 23 years) of minesoils and two different slope classes, nearly level to gently sloping and steep to very steep, along with three contiguous native soils on a reclaimed mountaintop removal mine in Logan County, West Virginia were described and sampled. Standard analyses of physical and chemical properties were conducted in order to classify these soils. Some …

Changes In Stand Structure And Species Diversity Following Clearcutting In Central Appalachian Hardwoods, Mark Benjamin Brashears Aug 2001

Changes In Stand Structure And Species Diversity Following Clearcutting In Central Appalachian Hardwoods, Mark Benjamin Brashears

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports

The clearcutting of second-growth Appalachian hardwood forests may cause a reduction in species diversity of the new cohort. This study measured changes in species composition, diversity, and stand structural characteristics following clearcutting of a second-growth hardwood forest. To evaluate the temporal changes in importance of central Appalachian hardwood tree species, thirteen clearcuts on good excellent sites in West Virginia were inventoried before harvesting and 2--26 years after harvesting. Shannon-Weaver's diversity index (H'), Pielou's evenness index (E), and species richness (S) were calculated before and after clearcutting. Species diversity and evenness has decreased, and species richness has remained stable following clearcutting. …

Mitigation Of Water Quality And Ecosystem Impacts Of Roadway Construction Through Retrospective Engineering Analyses, Jaime Monique Sayre May 2001

Mitigation Of Water Quality And Ecosystem Impacts Of Roadway Construction Through Retrospective Engineering Analyses, Jaime Monique Sayre

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports

During the construction of a segment of Appalachian Corridor H between Buckhannon and Elkins, West Virginia, mine spoils and land use features related to historic mining were disturbed. An assessment of the water quality, benthic macro invertebrates, and fish populations was conducted to ascertain the condition of the water and to assess the biological productivity of Laurel Run, a tributary of the Tygart Valley River which runs parallel to Corridor H. The water quality and biological impairments were attributed to the ineffective vegetation of the spoils pile, which permitted water infiltration and thus, served as a source of metals and …
