Corner Of The Classroom: Sense Of Belonging In Education Students, Robert M. O'Hara, Debi Switzer

Graduate Research and Discovery Symposium (GRADS)

Feeling a sense of connection to an environment evokes a sense of belonging. In fact, feeling a sense of belonging is a basic human need. Educators for decades have used literature to research and further understand how a sense of belonging can impact students. This paper focuses on an intersection of student demographic information, a college student’s sense of belonging and what that means for a college of education and teacher education program. Using data from the National Center for Education Statistics, university demographic data, and a survey centered on a sense of belonging, this research aims to understand and …

Predictive Factors Of Players' Acceptance Of Using Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Games (Mmorpgs) To Acquire English As A Second Language, Juan Li Apr 2019

Predictive Factors Of Players' Acceptance Of Using Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Games (Mmorpgs) To Acquire English As A Second Language, Juan Li

Graduate Research and Discovery Symposium (GRADS)

This study was designed to replicate and extend Bourgonjon et al. (2010)’s study on the factors predicting students' acceptance for using video games in the classrooms. In this study, an Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA) and reliability test were conducted to validate the adapted instrument using the data collected from 371 participants. Then, a path model was formulated to examine the factors predicting players' preference for using MMORPGs to learn L2 English vocabulary. The results show that the factor of perceived learning opportunities is the most important factor in predicting players' preference, meaning that players would prefer to use MMORPGs to …

Teaching "Soil Forming Factors: Climate" Using An Esri Story Map, G. R. Groshans, E. A. Mikhailova, C. J. Post, M. A. Schlautman Apr 2019

Teaching "Soil Forming Factors: Climate" Using An Esri Story Map, G. R. Groshans, E. A. Mikhailova, C. J. Post, M. A. Schlautman

Graduate Research and Discovery Symposium (GRADS)

The purpose of this study was to develop an ESRI Story Map “Soil Forming Factors: Climate” for multiple STEM disciplines. This study incorporated a pre- and post-test quasi-experimental design that utilized multiple methods of analysis, including quality assessment of ESRI Story Map using the five principles of effective storytelling, and direct quantitative measures of learning (quiz), and surveys of participants’ perceptions (PowerPoint presentation versus ESRI Story Map) using QualtricsTM. The survey results are summarized by gender, academic classification (year), and academic major program. Newly developed ESRI Story Map was an effective teaching tool as demonstrated by quiz scores and students’ …

The Effect Of Endogenous Vs. Exogenous Labor Market Flexibility On Gender Wage Gaps, Benjamin Posmanick, Peter Blair Apr 2019

The Effect Of Endogenous Vs. Exogenous Labor Market Flexibility On Gender Wage Gaps, Benjamin Posmanick, Peter Blair

Graduate Research and Discovery Symposium (GRADS)

Over the past four decades, the gender wage gap among part-time workers was 10-30 percentage points smaller than the gender wage gap among full-time workers. This is a new empirical fact – one that is predicted by the theory that increased labor market flexibility reduces gender wage gaps. We sharpen this prediction by arguing that flexibility that is demanded endogenously, as is the case with pursuing part-time work, reduces gender wage gaps; by contrast flexibility that is supplied exogenously, for example through state-mandated family leave policies, are capitalized into slower wage growth for women when compared to men. Moreover, we …

Well-Being And Engineering: Personal And Professional Well-Being Experiences Of Tenured Female Engineering Faculty, Shannon K. Stefl Apr 2019

Well-Being And Engineering: Personal And Professional Well-Being Experiences Of Tenured Female Engineering Faculty, Shannon K. Stefl

Graduate Research and Discovery Symposium (GRADS)

This poster presents early results from a doctoral research study. Designed to capture and share the stories of faculty, this qualitative research study examined the lived experience of female engineering faculty from several universities and engineering sub-disciplines to uncover how these women incorporate well-being across their personal and professional lives in support of their professional success as they navigate the faculty pathway. This poster will present the well-being experiences and findings for one study participant, Frances, an African American engineering faculty member who has navigated the faculty pathway through tenure and into an administrative position. Readers are encouraged to reflect …

Towards An Immersive Driving Simulator To Study Factors Related To Cybersickness, R. Venkatakrishnan, A. Bhargava, K. M. Lucaites, M. Volonte Apr 2019

Towards An Immersive Driving Simulator To Study Factors Related To Cybersickness, R. Venkatakrishnan, A. Bhargava, K. M. Lucaites, M. Volonte

Graduate Research and Discovery Symposium (GRADS)

What makes a good cybersickness testbed great? In this work, we discuss the characteristics of a high fidelity, realistic immersive virtual reality driving simulator developed to study cybersickness, a malady that is caused as a consequence of Virtual Reality usage. The simulator’s feasibility was evaluated by conducting a preliminary study. Results suggest that our platform is reliable and robust, making for an excellent testbed/ platform to study factors associated with cybersickness in Immersive Virtual Environments.
