The Spatial Effects Of Road Use Intensity On Forest Plant Communities And Soil Chemistry, David Asmussen
The Spatial Effects Of Road Use Intensity On Forest Plant Communities And Soil Chemistry, David Asmussen
Graduate College Dissertations and Theses
Roads alter the ecological landscape and affect the function and composition of nearby soil chemistry and plant communities in an area of impact termed the “edge-effect zone”. While the 6.3 million kilometers of roads in the US cover only about 1% of the land, the edge effect zone around these roads has been estimated to occupy nearly 20% of the total land area in the US (Forman 2000). The objective of this study was to examine the spatial extent of transported materials and impacts on forest soil and vegetative communities immediately surrounding roadways based on road types classified as “Highway,” …

Status Of Lake Whitefish (Coregonus Clupeaformis) In Lake Champlain, 2006-2010, Seth Herbst
Status Of Lake Whitefish (Coregonus Clupeaformis) In Lake Champlain, 2006-2010, Seth Herbst
Graduate College Dissertations and Theses
Lake whitefish (Coregonus clupeaformis), in the family Salmonidae, is a coldwater species that is widely distributed in North America. Throughout their range, whitefish support one of the most economically valuable freshwater fisheries and were also commercially fished in Lake Champlain. My goals were to quantify seasonal diet, determine temporal and spatial changes in larval abundance, evaluate biological parameters (size and age structure, sex composition, growth, condition, energy density, and fecundity), and determine if the introduction of zebra mussels (Dreissena polymorpha) to Lake Champlain in 1993 had similar affects on the whitefish population as seen in many of the Great Lakes. …

Engaging And Disengaging: A Qualitative Study Of Middle School Girls And Mathematics, Anita M Long
Graduate College Dissertations and Theses
The purpose of this study was to learn about the underlying factors that might help to explain differences in performance and engagement among middle school girls in mathematics. The study employed a qualitative approach to observe and listen directly to the voices of middle school girls and their parents and math teacher as they reflected on their experiences and thoughts about the girls‟ performance in and long-term goals related to mathematics. My goal was to hear what forces were working in and around the girls that might lead them to engagement or disengagement with mathematics. Through the use of journals, …
Increasing Physical Activity Of Preschool Students, Margaret Dunn-Carver
Increasing Physical Activity Of Preschool Students, Margaret Dunn-Carver
Graduate College Dissertations and Theses
Background. Childhood overweight and obesity is a serious health issue. Childhood obesity is associated with asthma, hepatic steatosis, sleep apnea, psychosocial complications, increased presence of cardiovascular disease risk factors, and increased medical costs. A decrease in physical activity, an increase in sedentary behavior, and unhealthy eating likely contribute to childhood overweight and obesity. Over the last 3 decades, the prevalence of early childhood obesity has also risen. The level of physical activity that preschoolers engage is influenced by policies and practices of childcare centers they attend. Given the large number of children enrolled in preschool settings and the variability of …
Unlearning Racism:, Edorah Frazer
Unlearning Racism:, Edorah Frazer
Graduate College Dissertations and Theses
Racism damages all of us. It degrades the lives of some, it diminishes the integrity of others, and it saps our resources and threatens our peace as a nation. Racism in the United States takes place on multiple levels: within and between individuals, in our cultural milieu, and in our social institutions. In this dissertation, I describe ways in which I have both encountered and perpetrated racism personally and professionally as an educator. I then explore ways in which racism can be unlearned by individuals and dismantled institutionally, particularly in the arena of education, so that our nation can be …
Welcoming The Stranger To The Land Of Cancer:, Theresa Lever
Welcoming The Stranger To The Land Of Cancer:, Theresa Lever
Graduate College Dissertations and Theses
The world of cancer care is a strange land to a person newly diagnosed with cancer. Like someone who leaves the familiarity of home and arrives in a foreign place, the person with cancer loses equilibrium and feels lost, experiences an assault on self-identity, and encounters an alien language and culture. It is this person who knocks as a stranger on the door of cancerland. Many philosophic and religious traditions obligate those receiving the stranger to provide a deep hospitality. One model of the practice of deep hospitality is summarized as door, table, space. When applied to the relationship between …
Mechanical Behavior Of Atomically Thin Graphene Sheets Using Atomic Force Microscopy Nanoindentation, Evan Malina
Mechanical Behavior Of Atomically Thin Graphene Sheets Using Atomic Force Microscopy Nanoindentation, Evan Malina
Graduate College Dissertations and Theses
Graphene, an atomically-thin layer of hexagonally bonded carbon atoms, is the strongest material ever tested. The unusual electrical and mechanical properties of graphene are particularly useful for next-generation transparent touch screens, flexible electronic displays, and photovoltaics. As such applications arise, it is critically important to characterize the resistance of this material under impact and deformation by nanoscale contact. The objective of this thesis is to study the physics of deformation in graphene sheets on a flat substrate under nanoindentation, as a function of number of graphene layers and applied force. In this work, the nanoindentation behavior of single and few …
Assessing Uncertainty Associated With Groundwater And Watershed Problems Using Fuzzy Mathematics And Generalized Regression Neural Networks, Bree R. Mathon
Assessing Uncertainty Associated With Groundwater And Watershed Problems Using Fuzzy Mathematics And Generalized Regression Neural Networks, Bree R. Mathon
Graduate College Dissertations and Theses
When trying to represent an environmental process using mathematical models, uncertainty is an integral part of numerical representation. Physically-based parameters are required by such models in order to forecast or make predictions. Typically, when the uncertainty inherent in models is addressed, only aleatory uncertainty (irreducible uncertainty) is considered. This type of uncertainty is amenable to analysis using probability theory. However, uncertainty due to lack of knowledge about the system, or epistemic uncertainty, should also be considered. Fuzzy set theory and fuzzy measure theory are tools that can be used to better assess epistemic, as well as aleatory, uncertainty in the …
Margaret Atwood’S Divided Self, Kate Moss
Margaret Atwood’S Divided Self, Kate Moss
Graduate College Dissertations and Theses
―Margaret Atwood‘s Divided Self‖ explores four novels by celebrated Canadian author, Margaret Atwood: Lady Oracle, Surfacing, Alias Grace, and The Robber Bride. Although others have discussed the reoccurring themes of disunity and duality in Atwood‘s work, these explorations have not addressed some of her newest novels and have taken a very limited approach to reading and understanding Atwood‘s theme of the divided self. This study opens up a literary ―conversation‖ about Atwood‘s theme of the divided self by examining the protagonists of these select novels by using different branches of theory and thought to fully explore this issue. To conquer …

Although formative assessment is fundamental to educational theory and practices, it is a widely misunderstood term for most educators. This qualitative study defines formative assessment as short-cycle assessments in which teachers adapt their instruction to meet the learners‟ immediate needs. This study focused on the transformation of teachers‟ practices and their perspectives of the critical pedagogical principles necessary to enact The Keeping Learning on Track Program® (KLT™) in their classrooms and in teacher learning communities. The participants in this study included 21 formally trained KLT teachers at the St. Johnsbury School. Over a one year period, I observed in classrooms, …
Education Through Meaning-Making: An Artist’S Journey From Quarterlifer To Educator, Tamara D. Brown
Education Through Meaning-Making: An Artist’S Journey From Quarterlifer To Educator, Tamara D. Brown
Graduate College Dissertations and Theses
Meaning-making is an important process to the personal and professional development of students in higher education. Today’s educators need to acknowledge and encourage the meaning-making process in order for these quarter-life students to enjoy an enriched life of meaning, as well as excel in academia. I challenge educators to apply meaning-making to their own lives in order to gain a deeper understanding of their personal purpose in their lives and as educators on college campuses. Written within a Scholarly Personal Narrative methodology, my thesis proposes that, through the deep and personal meaning-making process, students and educators can create a more …

Inflammation-Induced Plasticity Of Micturition Reflex Pathways, Lauren Arms
Inflammation-Induced Plasticity Of Micturition Reflex Pathways, Lauren Arms
Graduate College Dissertations and Theses
Although a seemingly basic and simple behavior, micturition necessitates precise integration and coordination of multiple divisions of the nervous system: visceral sensory, somatic motor, sympathetic, parasympathetic, as well as voluntary control from higher brain/ brainstem centers. When coordination of this circuitry falters, the consequences can be devastating and include severely decreased quality of life and substantial economic burden. This dissertation project investigates the potential role(s) of inflammatory mediators in bladder sensory physiology with the long term goal of elucidating potential targets for intervention. The overall hypothesis is that inflammatory-induced changes in the urinary bladder or afferent projections ultimately lead to …
Improved Methods For Cluster Identification And Visualization, Narine Manukyan
Improved Methods For Cluster Identification And Visualization, Narine Manukyan
Graduate College Dissertations and Theses
Self-organizing maps (SOMs) are self-organized projections of high dimensional data onto a low, typically two dimensional (2D), map wherein vector similarity is implicitly translated into topological closeness in the 2D projection. They are thus used for clustering and visualization of high dimensional data. However it is often challenging to interpret the results due to drawbacks of currently used methods for identifying and visualizing cluster boundaries in the resulting feature maps. In this thesis we introduce a new phase to the SOM that we refer to as the Cluster Reinforcement (CR) phase. The CR phase amplifies within-cluster similarity with the consequence …
Influence Of Plant Age, Soil Moisture, And Temperature Cylcing Date On Containter-Grown Herbaceous Perennials, Sarah Kingsley-Richards
Influence Of Plant Age, Soil Moisture, And Temperature Cylcing Date On Containter-Grown Herbaceous Perennials, Sarah Kingsley-Richards
Graduate College Dissertations and Theses
Perennial growers overwintering plant stock require information to assist in deciding which containerized plants are most likely to successfully overwinter. Three studies on container-grown herbaceous perennials were conducted to examine the influence of plant age, soil moisture, and temperature cycling date on cold hardiness. In January, plants were exposed to controlled freezing temperatures of -2, -5, -8, -11, and -14C and then returned to a 3-5C greenhouse. In June, plants were assessed using a visual rating scale of 1-5 (1 = dead, 3-5 = increasing salable quality, varying by cultivar) and dry weights of new growth were determined. Controlled freezing …

Titaniq Thermobarometry Of Fabric Development In The Strafford Dome, Vermont: Linking Microstructures To Orogenic Processes, Kyle T. Ashley
Graduate College Dissertations and Theses
Abstract Geochemical, microstructural and petrological analyses were conducted on metapelites from the Strafford Dome, Vermont. Samples record metamorphic conditions from biotite to peak kyanite/staurolite grade and preserve microstructures related to two Acadian nappe emplacement events. The purpose of this study was to test the validity and application of the Ti-in-quartz (“TitaniQ”) thermobarometer to constraining pressure-temperature-timing-deformation (P-T-t-D) paths in metamorphic tectonites. Due to the nearly ubiquitous presence of quartz in continental rocks, the ability to apply this method would have significant implications for improving our ability to resolve tectonic histories. Cathodoluminescence (CL) imaging on quartz was conducted to qualitatively assess the …
Investigating The Timing Of Deglaciation And The Efficiency Of Subglacial Erosion In Central-Western Greenland With Cosmogenic 10be And 26al, Lee B. Corbett
Investigating The Timing Of Deglaciation And The Efficiency Of Subglacial Erosion In Central-Western Greenland With Cosmogenic 10be And 26al, Lee B. Corbett
Graduate College Dissertations and Theses
This work aims to study the behavior of the western margin of the Greenland Ice Sheet during a period of pronounced ice retreat roughly 10,000 years ago, after the end of the last glacial period. It explores the efficiency of subglacial erosion, the spatial dynamics of ice retreat, and the rates of ice retreat. To address these questions, I use the radionuclides 10Be and 26Al, which form in rocks due to the bombardment of cosmic rays, only after the rocks have been exposed from underneath retreating ice. These nuclides can be used as a geologic dating technique to explore exposure …

In The "Eye Of The Beholder": Prejudice, The In-Group Over-Exclusion Effect, And The Fat Threshold, Leslie C Johnson
Graduate College Dissertations and Theses
This dissertation examined whether factors specific to the perceiver influence whom he/she labels as “fat.” Building upon research examining the role that one‟s level of identification with a group (Castano, Yzerbyt, Bourguignon, & Seron, 2002; Leyens & Yzerbyt, 1992) and one‟s prejudice level (Allport, 1954; Allport & Kramer, 1946) play in the process of categorizing others, this dissertation examined whether one‟s body weight centrality and prejudice against fat people influence whom he/she labels as “fat.” Further, to understand the mechanism explaining the link between these factors and the labeling process, this dissertation also explored whether motivational factors underlie whom a …
Being Black:, Learie C. Nurse
Being Black:, Learie C. Nurse
Graduate College Dissertations and Theses
Many Black scholars have researched and written about their experiences as Black students at a Predominantly White Institution (PWI). Most of their successes were built on the support they received from their families and friends. More importantly, their personal commitment to being numbered as successful Black students was the impetus for which they were willing to challenge the paradigm that Blacks can indeed succeed in higher education. As a Black Caribbean Diaspora student enrolled at a PWI, I have experienced what it is like to be Black through purposeful living, education, leadership and a divine plan. I have also utilized …
“Culturally Homeless”: Queer Parody And Negative Affect As Resistance To Normatives, Phillip Zapkin
“Culturally Homeless”: Queer Parody And Negative Affect As Resistance To Normatives, Phillip Zapkin
Graduate College Dissertations and Theses
The main theoretical thrust of my project involves the political uses of parodically performing shame and shaming rituals in resisting normative regulation. I argue that parodic performances of this negative affect—traditionally deployed to erase, obscure, and regulate queers—can expose how shame regulates the gender/sexuality performances of straight people as well as queers. I view this project primarily as a tactical shift from the parodic performances outlined by Judith Butler in texts like Gender Trouble, and I feel that the shift is important as a counter measure to increasing homonormative inclusion of (white, middle class) gays and lesbians into straight or …
Roles Of Fas In Neural Progenitor Cell Differentiation, Survival, And Immune-Cell Interactions, Julia Knight
Roles Of Fas In Neural Progenitor Cell Differentiation, Survival, And Immune-Cell Interactions, Julia Knight
Graduate College Dissertations and Theses
Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a leading cause of neurological disability in young adults. Although current treatments can reduce symptomology and relapse rate, they are unable to prevent the chronic neurodegeneration that occurs at later stages. MS pathology is mediated by complex interactions between invading immune cells, neurons, glia, and endogenous stores of neural progenitor cells (NPCs). Factors critical to NPC/immune cell communication as well as the survival, differentiation, and proliferation of NPCs are not well defined. Elucidation of these factors will allow for the advancement of NPC transplantation therapies as well as the identification of novel pharmacological targets. Fas – …
