Space-Time Pattern Of Underground Radon Emission And The Influence Of Environmental Factors Using Sensor Networks, Sumya Tasnim

Radon is the leading cause of lung cancer after smoking. There is a lack of information regarding underground radon concentrations at a local scale. This research assessed the underground radon emissions from 30 sensors from May 2022 to January 2023. This thesis utilized the emerging hotspot technique to identify the hotspots and coldspots of underground radon concentrations. It then evaluated their correlations with temperature, humidity, air pressure, CO2, and volatile organic compound (VOC). Radon is a radioactive gas that potentially causes lung cancer after long-term exposure. This thesis investigated the confluent impact of geology, housing characteristics, and season on indoor radonand identified the significant factors associated with elevated radon levels in Atlanta metropolitan area, USA. Using the data obtained from the private vendor, Air Chek, this study identified hot spots of high radon levels. The hot spots were found in Douglas, Fulton, DeKalb, and Gwinnett. Over the last few decades, the rapid expansion of the Atlanta urban area has led to the increase of the number of sources of pollutions around the area and the level of pollution in the Chattahoochee River. This research analyzed the change in the distribution of sources of contamination over time and space, and evaluated their impact on environmental justice in the Atlanta metropolitan area. The results indicate contaminated areas increased from 2000 to 2019, spreading from the central metropolitan area to the south along the Chattahoochee River. Implementing Geographic Information Systems (GIS) in a developing country can improve spatial planning and decision-making. Utilizing a Participatory GIS framework of maximizing community empowerment and limiting marginalization, this thesis research explores the barriers associated with implementing GIS in Dangriga, Belize and how to overcome those barriers. The routing of the Trans-Anatolian Pipeline plays an important role in the future energy security of the European Union. The natural gas pipeline is planned to run from the natural gas fields in the Caspian Sea through Turkey. This project is a case study for a Geographic Information System (GIS) least-cost route analysis of a section of the proposed pipeline in Western Turkey. Areal interpolation is a geospatial analysis method that allows researchers to estimate the incidence of a phenomenon in one set of areal units given data based on different areal units. One practice implemented in conjunction with areal interpolation is known as filtered area weighting, in which ancillary data is introduced to exclude specific areas from the areal units based on certain criteria, thus providing a more accurate representation of population distribution. Spatiotemporal Analyses Of Child Pedestrian-Vehicle Incidents Occurring During School-Commuting Hours In Metro Atlanta From 2000 To 2007, Amy M. Moore

From 2000 to 2007, the five core county area of Metropolitan Atlanta (Fulton, Dekalb, Clayton, Cobb and Gwinnett) experienced 1,871 incidents involving child pedestrians. Nearly one-third of these incidents occurred during school-commuting hours. This study examines the geospatial locations of these incidents, with regards to the location of all 647 public schools within the study area. A GIS is used to analyze the spatiotemporal arrangement of these incidents in order to find risk factors and patterns in the data. Aspects of the built environment are then considered in areas with higher frequencies of child pedestrian-vehicle incidents. A walkability assessment is …
