The Impact Of A Mentoring Program On Adolescent Girls’ Self-Esteem, Natalie C. Flanders Apr 2017

The Impact Of A Mentoring Program On Adolescent Girls’ Self-Esteem, Natalie C. Flanders

Georgia College Student Research Events

Adolescents in the modern world often find themselves facing pressures and influences from family, friends and society. Influences such as advertisement and media are readily available through social media and internet. Girls are especially vulnerable to the pressure in maintaining an ideal body image due to stereotypical female images being portrait as beautiful and attractive. It often results in girl’s preoccupation with beauty and peers’ perceptions, along with other risky behaviors (Galeotti, 2015). Past research found support through a mentoring relationship can have profound impacts on adolescents social-emotional, cognitive, and identity development (Schwartz, Lowe, & Rhodes, 2012). Youth mentoring is …

The Uneven Scales Of Lady Justice, Jessica H. Shepard Apr 2017

The Uneven Scales Of Lady Justice, Jessica H. Shepard

Georgia College Student Research Events

For centuries, women have been assigned a specific gender role, and men hold them accountable to stay within this role. When these roles are broken, severe punishment or dismissal can be the result. From the Demonic age to today, as well as the different schools of criminology, the way women have been treated has been documented. The evil woman theory introduces the idea that when women commit a crime, they are no longer acting in the stereotypical way of a woman; therefore, punishment should be more severe. On the other side, some men treat women with chivalry, seeing them as …

Does Race Impact Judicial Outcomes?, Kameron L. Griffin

Georgia College Student Research Events

Over the past decade, many arguments over racial disparity have become the center of worldwide media attention. While many studies have gathered and revealed a consensus of the existence of racial inequality in mass incarceration rates and the criminal justice system, few have investigated the role that race plays in determining severity of punishment. Utilizing Waves 1, 3 and 4 of the Add-Health cross-sectional data set, this paper will estimate and examine the effect being in a minority has on judicial decisions in criminal court. By using traditional OLS procedure in STATA, I estimated the impact that race has on …

The Flaws Of Deterrence Theory, Hunter Oneal Cooley Apr 2017

The Flaws Of Deterrence Theory, Hunter Oneal Cooley

Georgia College Student Research Events

In my paper, I discuss the means of the deterrence theory, and argue against its original intent and how in my views it is a failed and flawed theory. I discuss the notion of inherent “evil” in people, and how that the deterrence theory cannot simply go against and correct something that I argue is inherent in humans. I discuss the inherent trait to commit crime, or simply the evil nature that can lead to crime that I think is inherent in people. I give reasons for the failure and the flaws of the theory, I use one prime example …

Key Encryption Through Quantum Optics, Madison Durrance, Zach Galberd, Abbey Savage, Tristan Cabrera, Josh Hoffman Apr 2017

Key Encryption Through Quantum Optics, Madison Durrance, Zach Galberd, Abbey Savage, Tristan Cabrera, Josh Hoffman

Georgia College Student Research Events

Cryptography has been around since the dawn of human civilization to send private messages for commercial, military, and political purposes. Some of the most important ciphers are the Vigenère cipher, the enigma, and the more modern RSA. Because of the development of the internet, private encryption has also become increasingly more important. The weakest link of encryption is the key creation and key distribution. A key is needed to encrypt and decipher codes and is needed by both the user and sender. A solution to this problem is the generation of quantum key distributions. In our experiment, we are now …

Does An Adoptee’S Race Affect The Probability Of An Interracial Adoption?, Timothy C. Yates Apr 2017

Does An Adoptee’S Race Affect The Probability Of An Interracial Adoption?, Timothy C. Yates

Georgia College Student Research Events

I estimate the effect an adoptee’s race has on their chance of interracial adoption. I use data provided by the 2007 National Survey of Adoptive Parents for the linear regression, one of the only sources of individual data on adopted children. The study tests the idea that adopting outside of one’s race provides greater utility to the adopter since it is perceived as more altruistic relative to adopting within one’s race. For the purpose of the study, any circumstance where at least one adoptive parent differs in race from the adoptee is considered an interracial adoption. Ultimately, the results indicate …

Polarized protein secretion is a fundamental process for all organisms, from yeast to higher eukaryotes. The secretory pathway in eukaryotes includes many steps mediated by hundreds of essential proteins. Our interest lies on Sec6, which is an 88kDa protein subunit of the tethering complex named exocyst, which is known to play diverse roles in recognition, tethering, and SNARE-mediated fusion of secretory vesicles. Previous work on Sec6 done by Munson and Songer (2009) explored phenotypes of two novel SEC6 mutant proteins, whose conserved surface amino acids had been altered. Both sec6-49 and sec6-54 mutant alleles displayed severe temperature sensitive growth and …

Determination Of The Binding Site Of Adenovirus E4 11k On The Cellular Protein Ddx6, Clint E. Edmunds, Courtney F. Moon

Georgia College Student Research Events

Adenovirus is a double-stranded DNA virus that is responsible for localized infections, such as upper respiratory tract infections. The virus takes over the target cell through many mechanisms, in particular taking control of host cell gene expression mechanisms as well as controlling host cell protein synthesis machinery. One of the functions of the adenovirus E4 11k protein is in turning off host cell protein synthesis and regulating late viral gene expression. E4 11k from all adenovirus subclasses has been shown to disrupt cellular RNA processing bodies (P-bodies), and adenovirus serotype 5 has a direct interaction with a P-body protein, Ddx6. …

An independent t-test was conducted to analyze the effectiveness of HBPM on the participants’ …

3d Printing Plastic Scintillators, Madison Durrance, Nicolas Merino, Emily Vanderwolf Apr 2017

3d Printing Plastic Scintillators, Madison Durrance, Nicolas Merino, Emily Vanderwolf

Georgia College Student Research Events

Scintillation is the production of visible light in a transparent material when exposed to either an electron, ion, or some other high energy particle. There are many ways to manufacture scintillators, but unfortunately many of these methods involve the costly machining of crystal materials. We plan to reduce this cost by attempting to manufacture plastic scintillators using a 3D printer. The most difficult challenge has been making transparent prints. We have had success with PET filament, the same plastic used in soda bottles. Upon successful clear prints, we intend to use recycled bottles to manufacture our own doped fiber. Organic …

Impact Of Cations On The Sorption Capabilities Of Kaolin Towards Biofilm-Forming Bacteria, Rachel E. Brineman Apr 2017

Impact Of Cations On The Sorption Capabilities Of Kaolin Towards Biofilm-Forming Bacteria, Rachel E. Brineman

Georgia College Student Research Events

Biofilm-forming bacteria cause problems for industries such as medical, food, and water treatment. Due to its heterogeneous charges, kaolin is capable of sorption of these microorganisms. These charges are impacted by pH and cations, which change the electrostatic interactions between kaolin particles and microorganisms. Proper pH and cation composition may lead to enhanced sorption. The impact of Al3+ cations on kaolin sorption of Gram negative (E. coli and P. aeruginosa) and Gram positive (B. megaterium and S. aureus) was investigated. Calcined kaolin and Diatomaceous Earth kaolin, which were selected in previous studies, were incubated in triplicates with the above organisms …

Kinetics Of Crystal Violet Color Fading Via A Small Footprint Diode Array Spectrometer, Paige Lott

Georgia College Student Research Events

Crystal violet is a pH indicator and is commonly used to classify bacteria. In acidic solutions, crystal violet is yellow in color and at approximately the pH of 1.6, it transitions to a violet color. Over time, this violet color fades as it reacts with the CO 2 in the air until it is clear. A small footprint visible-near- infrared spectrometer (Vis-NIR) with diode array detector was employed in this investigation. Using the software that operates the spectrometer, the absorbance of crystal violet solutions can be measured at 585 nm at high concentrations of base as a function of time. …

Benefits Of Having A Pet At College: Perception Of Today’S College Students, Morgan Jenkins Apr 2017

Benefits Of Having A Pet At College: Perception Of Today’S College Students, Morgan Jenkins

Georgia College Student Research Events

The present literature review examined data from 10 studies that examined the benefits of pet therapy and well-being. Florence Nightingale, a pioneer of nursing, recognized these benefits in the early 1800s when she used animals to provide support to mentally ill patients. Since then, pets, but mainly dogs, have been used across various populations and in numerous settings such as with geriatrics in nursing homes, in disaster relief, with war veterans suffering from PTSD, with inmates in correctional facilities, with terminal patients in hospice care, and with pediatric patients in the hospital setting. In all of these scenarios, findings suggest …

God, Nature, And Man In Justine, Kayley R. Roberson Apr 2017

God, Nature, And Man In Justine, Kayley R. Roberson

Georgia College Student Research Events

In the French Enlightenment writer the Marquis de Sade’s best-known novel, Justine, issues surrounding God, nature, and humankind pose significant problems for the protagonist of the story. Sade’s materialist philosophical work affirms his belief that nature is the most influential factor in the lives of humans and that God does not exist. Sade states that violence, immorality, and vice derive from nature and exist as the basic instincts of man. He argues that these temptations must be praised rather than forbidden. While Justine, the virtuous title character, faces corruption at every turn, she refuses to concede victory to the depravities …

The Eighteenth-Century Origins Of Sally Mann’S “New Child”, Victoria L. Pitts Apr 2017

The Eighteenth-Century Origins Of Sally Mann’S “New Child”, Victoria L. Pitts

Georgia College Student Research Events

Sally Mann’s 1992 series, Immediate Family, of sixty-five gelatin silver prints captures her three young children—Emmett, Virginia, and Jessie—in various stages of nudity while delighting in the pleasures of childhood games, including roller-skating, swimming, and fishing. Critics have argued that Mann’s overtly sexualized depictions of her children transgress the traditional, unsullied representation of youth in art history. The abandonment of proper social norms for the comportment of children in Mann’s work parallels similarly transgressive themes explored by other twentieth-century photographers, including Diane Arbus and Nan Goldin. Arbus and Goldin reveal the world of outsiders in their depictions of club goers, …

Since the early 21st century, the game of golf has seen a shift in importance of touch and finesse towards power and distance. Though many studies have observed the effects of individual golf statistics on earnings, none have examined if these effects fluctuate between genders. The purpose of my study is to show male and female professional golfers the effects of hitting the ball far and if their practice time might be better off spent practicing other areas of the game. By using player statistics from the 2015 PGA and LPGA cross sectional data set, this paper will examine if …

Influences On 21st Century Federal Elections, Laura A. Ahrens Apr 2017

Influences On 21st Century Federal Elections, Laura A. Ahrens

Georgia College Student Research Events

Expansive research exists on the topic of American citizens’ participation and behavior related to voting in federal elections. It is clear that multiple variables influence a citizen’s choice to vote and the political direction of that vote. However, there remains room for analyzing American electoral participation since politics and presidential decisions are increasingly shaping daily life activities. In this paper, I critically analyze the dependent variables of whether or not American respondents voted in the 2012 federal election, and if so how they voted for the presidential candidate. Additionally, I utilize logistic regression to examine whether there is a significant …

Effects Of Interval Training On Memory Function, In College Students, Matthew Young, Jennifer Spencer, Lisa Schick

Georgia College Student Research Events

The purpose of this study was to further investigate if exercise in the form of moderate intensity interval training influences memory function. While past studies have shown cognitive function improvements prior to both acute continuous moderate intensity exercise and high intensity interval training, no studies have been conducted to explore the effects of high intensity interval training on cognitive function. These previous studies also used a different method of measurement, a Stroop test, to measure cognitive function. This method is significantly different than the word recall test used in this study, which was designed to specifically assess cognitive function in …

Silver And Gold: The Markers Of Goodness, Greed And Vanity In Chaucer's Travelers, Samantha G. Strickland Apr 2017

Silver And Gold: The Markers Of Goodness, Greed And Vanity In Chaucer's Travelers, Samantha G. Strickland

Georgia College Student Research Events

In this presentation, I will argue that in the “General Prologue” to Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales, Chaucer refers to silver and gold in three different ways in and analyze how these methods reflect on the travelers as well as reflect Chaucer’s own musings on morality and wealth: through description of their attire or looks, through reference to the literal exchange, and through metaphor. All three types of references allow for both negative, like the Pardoner and Miller, and positive, like the Parson, evaluations of the specific traveler’s character, and through this Chaucer reminds the reader that wealth is not inherently good …
