A Galvanic Cell Driven Controlled Release System Based On Conducting Polymers, Caiyun Wang, Chee O. Too, Philip G. Whitten, G G. Wallace

A self-powered controlled release system is achieved via galvanic coupling of a conducting polymer and a zinc anode. Release of an anionic dye molecule, phenol red (PR), as the polymer is reduced is quantified. Triggered release using the galvanic cell is demonstrated in a freeze-thaw experiment when melting of the electrolyte completes the galvanic cell and enables oxidation/reduction to occur.

Composite polymer electrolytes (CPEs) based on poly (ethylene oxide) (PEO) (Mol.Wt similar to 6 x 10(5)) complexed with LiN(CF3SO2)(2) lithium salt and SrBi4Ti4O15 ferroelectric ceramic filler have been prepared as films. Citrate gel technique and conventional solid state technique were employed for the synthesis of the ferroelectric fillers in order to study the effect of particle size of the filler on ionic conductivity of the polymer electrolyte. Characterization techniques such as X-ray diffraction (XRD), differential thermal analysis (DTA), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and temperature dependant DC conductivity studies were taken for the prepared polymer composite electrolytes. The broadening of DTA …

LaMnO3-based films were prepared using the chemical solution deposition method. It was found that the films on perovskite oxide single crystal substrates are highly (h00)-oriented when the annealing atmosphere is oxygen or air; however, when the substrate is yttrium-stabilized ZrO2, only the La1-NmO3 films are highly (h00)-oriented, and other LaMnO3-based films are (110)-oriented. Under a reducing annealing atmosphere, the atmosphere must be wet in order to create a suitable oxygen partial pressure to crystallize the LaMnO3-based films. After annealing under a wet reducing atmosphere the LaMnO3-based films are directly deposited on Ni tapes; however, when SrTiO3-buffered Ni types are used, …

We have investigated RuSr2Eu1.5Ce2O10 (Ru-1222) and RuSr2EuCu2O8 (Ru-1212) samples by using x-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, dc magnetization, ac susceptibility, and resistivity measurements. Based on the results obtained, we propose an explanation of the magnetic behaviour of the Ru-based systems. Our model is capable of describing controversial observations of multiple magnetic transitions on temperature dependent dc magnetization measurements as well as the reentrance of irreversibility in hysteresis ≤200K. The experimental results suggest that Ru-based samples always contain a small amount of at least one additional magnetic phase with …

Stiffness Characterisation Of Microcantilevers Based On Conducting Polymers, Gursel Alici, Michael J. Higgins Jan 2008

Stiffness Characterisation Of Microcantilevers Based On Conducting Polymers, Gursel Alici, Michael J. Higgins

Faculty of Engineering - Papers (Archive)

The object of this paper is to characterise the stiffness of microfabricated cantilevers consisting of two electroactive polymer (polypyrrole (PPy)) layers, and two gold layers with a negligible thickness and a layer of porous polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF), which serves as a backing layer and electrolyte storage tank. This composite cantilever structure is used as polymer actuators or famously known as artificial muscles when tailored appropriately. The polymer microactuators considered in this study, which were fabricated using a laser ablation technique, could operate both in aqueous and non-aqueous media. The stiffness characterization of the microactuators is critical to assess their suitability …
