Morphometry Of Juvenile And Subadult Loligo Pealei And L. Plei From The Northern Gulf Of Mexico, Guillermo Sánchez, Harriet M. Perry, Christine B. Trigg, Michael Vecchione, Clyde Roper, Patricia M. Biesot Jul 1996

Morphometry Of Juvenile And Subadult Loligo Pealei And L. Plei From The Northern Gulf Of Mexico, Guillermo Sánchez, Harriet M. Perry, Christine B. Trigg, Michael Vecchione, Clyde Roper, Patricia M. Biesot

Faculty Publications

Two species of Loligo are abundant in northern Gulf waters: the long-finned squid, Loligo pealei. and the arrow squid, Loligo plei. Variability within species and similarities between the species often hamper accurate identification. The two species more closely resemble each other in areas of sympatry. and there is overlap in almost all of the diagnostic characters. Small specimens of Loligo are not easily identified. and there are few studies detailing their morphometry. Because of the taxonomic uncertainties associated with the identification of juveniles and subadults of L. pealei and L. plei, the species were differentiated by isoelectric …

Affective goals for physical education have historically been an identified goal for physical education programs, and such goals continue to be integral parts of what physical education teachers say they want to do. Affective value orientations to curriculum have also been identified as strong aspects of the values and belief systems of practicing physical educators (Ennis, Ross, & Chen, 1992) as well as the values and belief systems of preservice teachers (Solmon &Ashy, 1995).

Increasing Husbands' Involvement In Domestic Labor: Issues For Therapists, Kipling S. Rasmussen, Alan J. Hawkins, Kenneth P. Schwab Jun 1996

Increasing Husbands' Involvement In Domestic Labor: Issues For Therapists, Kipling S. Rasmussen, Alan J. Hawkins, Kenneth P. Schwab

Faculty Publications

As a result of the dramatic increase in women's participation in the work force, more relationship therapists are seeing couples who are dissatisfied with how domestic labor is divided in their homes. Although, this issue may seem therapeutically straightforward, there are many aspects which make its renegotiation surprisingly problematic and complex. This article is an effort to delineate some of these issues such as engaging men in therapy, exploring emotional issues connected with housework, and the mechanism of gatekeeping. Also included is a therapeutic framework for addressing client concerns about domestic responsibilities.

Compressing Semi-Structured Text Using Hierarchical Phrase Identifications, Dan R. Olsen Jr., Craig G. Nevill-Manning, Ian H. Witten Apr 1996

Compressing Semi-Structured Text Using Hierarchical Phrase Identifications, Dan R. Olsen Jr., Craig G. Nevill-Manning, Ian H. Witten

Faculty Publications

The structure of this paper is as follows. We begin by identifying some characteristics of semi-structured text that have special relevance to data compression. We then give a brief account of a particular large textual database, and describe a compression scheme that exploits its structure. In addition to providing compression, the system gives some insight into the structure of the database. Finally we show how the hierarchical grammar can be generalized, first manually and then automatically, to yield further improvements in compression performance.

Theory, Science, And 'Micro-Macro' Bridges In Structural Social Psychology, Barry N. Markovsky Apr 1996

Theory, Science, And 'Micro-Macro' Bridges In Structural Social Psychology, Barry N. Markovsky

Faculty Publications

Social psychology stands to benefit from multilevel theories that link it to both lower and higher levels of analysis. Making the link, however, requires a level of theoretical rigor heretofore relatively uncommon in the social sciences. After refuting several common objections to this brand of theorizing, I offer a rationale and a set of criteria for multilevel theory construction.

Education And Cultural Diversity, Gretta Berghammer Mar 1996

Education And Cultural Diversity, Gretta Berghammer

Faculty Publications

Beginning with the influx of "new" students following World War II, the higher education community has become more diverse in terms of race, ethnicity, financial background, academic preparation, vocational goals, and physical abilities. Levine (1993) traces these historical developments, which clearly are uneven across institutions. In addition, the pace of change has been unsteady for at least some subgroups served by higher education. While each of the five decades has marked increasing numbers and percentages of "minority" students enrolled in colleges and universities, enrollment growth in some minority groups-especially African-American and Native American-has slowed or reversed. Enrollment is also different …

Once A Century: Time For A Structural Overhaul Of The Federal Courts, Martha Dragich Jan 1996

Once A Century: Time For A Structural Overhaul Of The Federal Courts, Martha Dragich

Faculty Publications

In this Article, I describe a structure capable of accommodating growing caseloads in a manner consistent with basic values of appellate justice. Before doing so, I sketch in Part I the structural evolution of the federal courts. Part II describes the current pressures on the courts of appeals, while Part III examines the effects of internal reforms on the quality of appellate justice and the development of a coherent body of national law. Next, in Part IV, I posit requirements for the federal courts' third century. Part V reviews major proposals to address the caseload crisis in the courts of …

A Biologic Argument For Gay Essentialism-Determinism: Implications For Equal Protection And Substantive Due Process, E. Gary Spitko Jan 1996

A Biologic Argument For Gay Essentialism-Determinism: Implications For Equal Protection And Substantive Due Process, E. Gary Spitko

Classifications, like race, that historically have been used to saddle certain people with disabilities on the basis of a characteristic that otherwise would be irrelevant to an individual's ability to contribute to society are inherently suspect as more likely to have been the product of irrational prejudice and, thus, are deserving of heightened equal protection scrutiny. Thus, in adjudicating whether a sexual orientation classification is deserving of heightened equal protection scrutiny, a court should ask only whether gay people have suffered a history of discrimination and whether their sexual orientation says anything about their ability to contribute to society.

The …
