Nonenzymatic glucosylation of protein is initiated by the reversible condensation of glucose in its open chain form with the amino groups on the protein. The initial product is an aldimine (Schiff base) which cyclizes to the glycosylamine derivative. The aldimine can undergo a slow Amadori rearrangement to yield the relatively stable ketoamine adduct which is structurally analogous to fructose. 13C NMR has been used to characterize these early products of nonenzymatic glucosylation, using RNase A as a model protein. C-1 of the beta-pyranose anomer of the glycosylamine was identified at 88.8 ppm in the spectrum of RNase glucosylated approximately 1:1 …

In addition to containing microtubule and microfilament systems, vertebrate epithelial cells contain an elaborate keratin intermediate-filament cytoskeleton. Little is known about its structural organization or function. Using indirect immunofluorescence microscopy with an antikeratin antiserum probe, we found that destabilization of microtubules and microfilaments with cytostatic drugs induces significant alterations in the cytoskeletal organizationof keratin filaments in HeLa and fetal mouse epidermal cells. Keratin filament organizationwas observed to undergo a rapid (1-2 h) transition from a uniform distribution to an open lattice of keratin fibers stabilized by membrane-associated focal centers . Since addition of any one drug alone did not elicit …

Of 404 cases in a short-term maternity-stay program studied retrospectively, 70 percent enrolled for financial reasons. A total of 251 mothers (62.1 percent of the study group) completed the program. Most of those who left did so because of inability to pay. No mothers had to be readmitted to the hospital after discharge and only four infants (1.7 percent). Of 238 infants discharged from the hospital under the program, 25.6 percent failed to return for the required newborn follow-up examination within 36 hours. It is believed that the early maternal-infant discharge program is a safe alternative when strict criteria are …

Impressions Of A Not-So-Average Juror, Robert H. Jerry Ii
Impressions Of A Not-So-Average Juror, Robert H. Jerry Ii

Direct observation of jury decision-making is impossible without tainting the quality of the observations, and perhaps the jury's decision itself. Another reason for the difficulty attorneys have in understanding how juries will respond to their efforts is lack of experience. Because attorneys rarely serve on juries, the typical attorney cannot converse with colleagues about personal observations of how juries decide cases.
It is probably fair to say that I am one of only a few lawyers who has served on a jury. My own recollections of my service may well be incomplete, skewed, and deficient. Generalizations from my recollections must …

Current Trends In The Planning And Development Of Northern European Collections, Richard Hacken
Current Trends In The Planning And Development Of Northern European Collections, Richard Hacken
Faculty Publications
Current planning and development of collections in the social sciences and humanities for German-speaking Europe, the Netherlands, and Scandinavia reflect the changing needs of research, strict budgetary limits, the prevailing publishing market in those countries, and certain innovations in library automation. Librarians responsible for supporting an area study of Northern Europe may shape the trends to their advantage by careful policy planning, by informed financial choices, by the use of data bases and resource sharing, by privately-nurtured channels of acquisition and support and by a continuing self-education program that might include participation in the activities of the CES and WESS.

Nonenzymatic Glucosylation And Glucose-Dependent Cross-Linking Of Protein, Albert S. Eble, Suzanne R. Thorpe, John W. Baynes
Faculty Publications
A model system using RNase A has been established for studying the nonenzymatic glucosylation and glucose-dependent cross-linking of protein (Maillard reaction) under physiological conditions in vitro. The rate of glucosylation of RNase was first order in glucose. Glucosylation was accompanied by a comparable decrease in primary amino groups in the protein and lysine recoverable by amino acid analysis. Analysis of glucosylation reaction mixtures by sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis in the presence of mercaptoethanol revealed the time-dependent formation of RNase dimer and trimer. The polymerization reaction was mixed order with respect to glucose concentration, but was approximately first order with …
The Potential Of Girdled And 2,4-D-Injected Southern Red Oaks As Woodpecker Nesting And Foraging Sites, Richard N. Conner, James C. Kroll, David L. Kulhavy
The Potential Of Girdled And 2,4-D-Injected Southern Red Oaks As Woodpecker Nesting And Foraging Sites, Richard N. Conner, James C. Kroll, David L. Kulhavy
Faculty Publications
Comparisons of extent of decay in southern red oaks (Quercus falcate Michx.) revealed that trees injected with 2.4-D decayed sooner than girdled trees. Internal examinations of treated trees revealed that girdling and injection permitted growth of heartwood-and sapwood-decaying fungi a condition necessary for woodpecker nest cavity excavation. As a result of the delayed decay, girdling produces better woodpecker habitat in southern red oak. Girdled southern red oaks remain standing longer for woodpeckers to use for foraging and nesting sites. Number of snags required to support various percentages of woodpecker population maximums are presented.
Presidential Popularity And Macroeconomic Performance: Are Voters Really So Naive?, Henry W. Chappell Jr.
Presidential Popularity And Macroeconomic Performance: Are Voters Really So Naive?, Henry W. Chappell Jr.
Faculty Publications
The article focuses on the relationships between the macroeconomic performance of political administration and their popularity or vote getting ability. All of the studies that has been performed to analyze the relationships agree that votes and popularity can be explained well by models which suppose that voters judge policy makers on the basis of retrospective evaluation of past macroeconomic outcomes. While conventional popularity functions assume that voters simply punish inflation and reward output or low unemployment, voters who understand the long and short run relationships noted above would evaluate policymakers differently. Inflation in a given period is largely determined by …

Unification Of Ernst-Equation Backlund Transformations Using A Modified Wahlquist-Estabrook Technique; Wahlquist-Estabrook, B. Kent Harrison
Faculty Publications
The three known Backlund transformations for the Ernst equation are derived using a modification of the Wahlquist-Estabrook prolongation procedure. The modification requires that the equation to be studied be cast into a set of differential forms and their exterior derivatives, such that all coefficients are constant (a "CC ideal''). Analysis of the resulting equations produces 16 solutions composed of the three basic transformations combined with identity and other essentially trivial transformations. The group structure of the transformations is discussed. A Backlund transformation (already known) for the Ernst-Maxwell equations can be found by the same method. Promising generalizations are mentioned.

Gamma-Gamma Angular Correlation Studies For 142ce, A. Wolf, C. Chung, W. B. Walters, R. L. Gill, M. Shmid, R. E. Chrien, Graham F. Peaslee

Gamma-gamma angular correlations for several cascades in 142Ce were measured using a four-detector system. In a recent publication the level at 1219 keV was assigned 22+ in contradiction to a previous assignment of 41+. This makes 142Ce completely different from any known nucleus in the same region. It is shown, however, that this level is, in fact, completely consistent with 4+ and is in agreement with systematics.

A Study Of Polynuclear Aromatic Hydrocarbons On An Amino Bonded Phase Liquid Chromatographic Column In The Normal And Reversed Phase, Dori Karlesky, Dennis C. Shelly, Isiah M. Warner
Faculty Publications
Experiments were run using an n-propyl amine polar bonded phase (Chromosorb LC-9) liquid chromatographic column in both the normal and reversed phase mode. Results confirm that the mechanism of separation in the normal phase is due mainly to a charge transfer interaction between the lone pair electrons on the stationary phase nitrogen and the π electron cloud of the solute PNAs. Elution order seems to depend upon a combination of π energy, and type of ring condensation of the solute. Plots of log I versus number of aromatic carbons for catacondensed PNAs suggest that while the specific interaction is different …

Rape, Racism, And The Law, Jennifer Wriggins
Faculty Publications
The historical legacy of the racist social meaning of rape and the consequences of that legacy are the focus of this article. The article, written in 1983, analyzes the U.S. law of rape, its history, and its legacy, from a perspective that is both feminist and antiracist. It examines the intersections and interactions of race and gender subordination in the context of rape, particularly looking at race and gender issues involving African-Americans and whites. It describes how the legal system’s selective acknowledgement of rape has disproportionately targeted African-American men for punishment and made African-American women both particularly vulnerable and particularly …

Congressional Preemption Of Mortgage Due-On-Sale Law: An Analysis Of The Garn-St. Germain Act, Dale A. Whitman, Grant S. Nelson

We first describe the several major types of mortgagor transfer restrictions, and the judicial and legislative responses to these restrictions before the Act. Second, we analyze the effect and coverage of the important provisions of the Act and its attendant regulation. The complex exceptions to the application of the Act known as “window periods” are then considered. These window periods were created by Congress in an attempt to soften the impact of the Act on states that previously restricted due-on-sale enforcement, and are based on preexisting state law. We examine the difficult standards for identifying such window periods and suggest …
