Elementary School Teacher’S Experiences Of Open Studio Process In Examining Diversity, Equity, And Inclusion Topics, Tiffany Thompson
Expressive Therapies Dissertations
ABSTRACT
This qualitative research study examined the experiences of two Black female teachers and six White female teachers who participated in five Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) workshops that incorporated Open Studio Process (OSP) using Expressive Therapy Continuum (ETC). It is informed by research on defensiveness and resistance that often accompanies and presents barriers to effective DEI training.
All eight study participants were elementary school teachers, ages 22-56. Participants engaged in five workshops that used artistic mediums to explore DEI topics. Participants visually and metaphorically represented their experiences. Results were analyzed using qualitative techniques.
Findings are that OSP using ETC …

An Art-Based Study Of Adult Perspectives On Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Dina Fried
Expressive Therapies Dissertations
This art-based inquiry set out to investigate if adults living with Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) could deepen their understanding of their relationship with the disorder through creative writing and visual art. In five individual sessions, each of four participants (referred to as co-researchers in this study) created writing texts and visual art, and observed and discussed the videos and visual art that I as researcher created in response to their work. Results showed that a multimodal artistic expression of the relationship with ADHD, enriched by an “artistic conversation" with the researcher, gave co-researchers new perspectives on how the condition had …
The Impact Of Visual Art-Making On The Brain, Christopher Belkofer
The Impact Of Visual Art-Making On The Brain, Christopher Belkofer
Expressive Therapies Dissertations
Although advancements in neuroscience research have informed the rationale of various art therapy interventions and explanatory frameworks, almost no empirical evidence exists as to how art therapy impacts the brain. Utilizing research that supports the QEEG (quantitative electroencephalogram) as a means for measuring the impact of therapeutic interventions, the brain activity of 10 participants was recorded before and after creating a spontaneous drawing. Each participant, who had 20 minutes to create an image of their choice using oil pastels, was asked to describe their image and their process. Paired t tests (p < .05) and z scores were calculated to compare relative …
