Soil Organic Carbon In Maine, Its Responses To Biochar Addition, And Climate Change, Xue Bai
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Soil organic carbon (SOC), as one of the largest C pools in terrestrial ecosystems, plays a key role in governing soil ecosystem processes and climate regulation. Climate change concerns have resulted in a rapidly growing interest in understanding the potential for natural climate solutions (NCS) that include enhancing SOC sequestration and reduce net atmospheric greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. This research focused on addressing information needs about SOC in Maine, specifically in evaluating available soil databases to accurately quantify SOC density and concentration, and study the response of selected representative Maine soils to biochar amendments under a changing climate.
Maine SOC …
Trust, Privacy, And Adaptive Forwarding In Wireless Named-Data Networks, Muktadir Rahman Chowdhury
Trust, Privacy, And Adaptive Forwarding In Wireless Named-Data Networks, Muktadir Rahman Chowdhury
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Today’s Internet falls short in supporting robust data delivery and strong data security in a wireless mobile environment, due to its host-based communication model and container-based security model. Named Data Networking (NDN) is a data-centric network architecture that provides a stateful forwarding plane and built-in security support. This work proposes forwarding strategies for NDN-based mobile ad-hoc networks (MANETs) and infrastructure-based wireless networks, and mechanisms for securing NDN-based vehicular networks. First, we propose Content Connectivity and Location-Aware Forwarding (CCLF), a forwarding strategy for MANETs. CCLF broadcasts NDN packets and lets each node make independent decisions on whether to forward packets based …

He advanced African American higher education through the founding of the University of West Tennessee, the publication of The Medical Surgical Observer, and co-founded the …
Effects Of A Novel Dsrna-Based Insecticide On The Colorado Potato Beetle, Samuel J. Pallis
Effects Of A Novel Dsrna-Based Insecticide On The Colorado Potato Beetle, Samuel J. Pallis
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The Colorado potato beetle, Leptinotarsa decemlineata (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) is one of the most destructive pests of the cultivated potato, Solanum tuberosum. Colorado potato beetles have been devastating potato crops for the past 150 years and have expanded their range during that time, becoming a globally distributed agricultural pest. Potato beetles are well-suited to agricultural environments and have evolved some degree of resistance to virtually all chemical insecticides. As such, the development of novel control methods to both control potato beetle populations and manage the evolution of insecticide resistance are in constant demand
The knockdown of gene functioning through ribonucleic acid …
Marker-Less Motion Capture System Using Openpose, Bin Feng
Marker-Less Motion Capture System Using Openpose, Bin Feng
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Motion capture systems are widely used for measuring athletic performance and as a diagnostic tool in sports medicine. Standard motion capture systems record body movement using: (1) a set of cameras to localize body segments; or (2) specialized suits in which inertial measurement units are directly attached to body segments. Major drawbacks of these systems are limited portability, affordability, and accessibility. This contribution presents a markerless motion capture system using a commercially available sports camera and the OpenPose human pose estimation algorithm. We have validated the proposed markerless system by analyzing the human biometrics during running and jumping movements. The …
Ecological Model In School Psychology: What Are The Historical Trends In School Psychology Research?, Kerry Lynn Jones
Ecological Model In School Psychology: What Are The Historical Trends In School Psychology Research?, Kerry Lynn Jones
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
More than 25 years ago, Conoley and Gutkin (1995) asserted the need for more adult-focused research and related practices in school psychology. In commemorating the 25-year anniversity of Conoley and Gutkin in a special issue in School Psychology (SP), Conoley et al. (2020) revisited some of their prior assertions, such school psychology practitioners and researchers would benefit from "adopting an ecological or public health approach" (p.329). They have preserved their position on the importance of adult-focused research and related practices in order to develop and maintain health-promoting systems for students. Conoley et al. concluded that school psychology has not moved …
A Deep Generative And Discriminative Approach In Modelling Spatial-Spectral Dynamics Of Varying Cognitive Load From Eeg Recordings, Felix Havugimana
A Deep Generative And Discriminative Approach In Modelling Spatial-Spectral Dynamics Of Varying Cognitive Load From Eeg Recordings, Felix Havugimana
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Cognitive load refers to the amount of used working memory resources, which is limited in both capacity and duration. Predicting cognitive load from raw electroencephalogram (EEG) recordings remains a challenge because of the high degree of noise due to technical variations in the recording process and the multi-factorial nature of the mapping between the EEG data and cognitive load. We present parameter-optimized deep convolutional neural network (CNN) models to predict four levels of cognitive load. We use eigenspace-based bootstrap sampling and Generative Adversarial Network (GAN) to address the issue of noise and a small number of samples in EEG. We …
A Variable Unit Hydrograph Incorporating Nonlinearity In Rainfall-Runoff Response Due To Antecedent Watershed Conditions, Aashis Sapkota
A Variable Unit Hydrograph Incorporating Nonlinearity In Rainfall-Runoff Response Due To Antecedent Watershed Conditions, Aashis Sapkota
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Runoff generation in a watershed is a highly complex process whose estimation is vital in performing engineering tasks such as flooding risk assessments and design of hydraulic structures. Because natural rainfall-runoff processes are complex and inherently nonlinear, they are difficult to quantify or parametrize. In engineering hydrology, this issue has been mostly circumvented by using highly simplified, lumped approaches. Typically, losses are abstracted from a total precipitation hyetograph (representing either an actual or a design storm, depending on the application) to obtain the effective rainfall component, that is understood to result in the corresponding flood event. Then, this effective precipitation …
The Immobilization Of Ticagrelor On Implant Materials And Corrosion And Biofouling Inhibition By Novel Layered Polymer Thin Films For Marine Application, Tell Lovelace
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Percutaneous coronary interventions are a widely used cardiovascular surgery which is typically accompanied by the insertion of a vascular stent. After the procedure patients are put on dual anti-platelet therapy (DAPT) to prevent stent thrombosis, a common complication to this procedure in which platelets aggregate in the blood vessel on the inserted stent. Systemic deactivation of platelets in patients via oral DAPT results in patients becoming bleeding risks in future medical procedures, necessitating the development of a localized delivery system for anti-platelet medications from the surface of the stent. A novel anti-thrombogenic vascular stent coating has been prepared by covalent …
Numerical Study Of Laryngeal Control Of Phonation Using Realistic Finite Element Models Of A Canine Larynx, Biao Geng
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
While many may take it for granted, the human voice is an incredible feat. An average person can produce a great variety of voices and change voice characteristics agilely even without formal training. Last several decades of research has established that the production of voice is largely a mechanical process: i.e., the sustained vibration of the vocal folds driven by the glottal air flow. Since one only has a single pair of vocal folds, the versatility comes with the ability to change the mechanical status of the vocal folds, including vocal fold length and thickness, tension, and level of adduction, …
Determining Effects Of Management Practices On Potato Early Dying And Soil Microbiome And Assessing Risk Of Fungicide Resistance In Verticillium Dahliae, Kedi Li
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Potato early dying (PED) is a yield-constraining soilborne disease of potato, caused by Verticillium spp. with V. dahliae being the predominant causal agent. Since the pathogen inhabits soil for long periods, PED management aims to reduce the population of V. dahliae in soil. Benzovindiflupyr and azoxystrobin are effective chemicals and frequently used in the control of V. dahliae. In this study, field trials were conducted at Aroostook Farm, Presque Isle, ME in 2019 and 2020. Chemical and biological products have been studied for PED control, and fungicide resistance was also examined. To evaluate fungicide resistance, benzovindiflupyr was characterized on …

Counselors Dumbfounded: Implications For Counseling Ethics, Ivan Irizarry
Counselors Dumbfounded: Implications For Counseling Ethics, Ivan Irizarry
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
How counselors should make ethical decisions frequently differs from how counselors actually make ethical decisions, which is often a non-linear process. Social Intuitionist Theory (Haidt, 2003) suggests this process entails a socially influenced intuitive judgment followed by post hoc rationale. The purpose of this study was to examine whether moral dumbfounding, which entails maintaining a moral judgment without supporting reason, occurs with practicing counselors. The results of survey data and open-ended coding showed that 58.5% of counselors were dumbfounded at least once when presented with four moral or ethical vignettes. Additional analyses exploring differences in dilemma-based vs. non-counseling vignettes, moral …

Culturally Therapeutic Approaches To Prejudice And Discrimination: Formulations, Interventions, And Structural Change, Jayme J. Jenkins
Culturally Therapeutic Approaches To Prejudice And Discrimination: Formulations, Interventions, And Structural Change, Jayme J. Jenkins
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Aims. Though psychologists are generally well-positioned to implement micro- and macro-level interventions from their roles as clinicians, educators, researchers, and consultants, there is a paucity of formal guidance on how to approach client-generated or structural prejudice and discrimination. The current study addresses this literature gap by integrating previous literature and implementation models from a related field toward a novel treatment approach.
Background. A critical literature review supported intervention-focused conceptualizations of “supremacism” and demonstrated that mutually reinforcing micro- and macro-level discrimination generates demographic disparities in safety, liberty, and well-being. This typically emerges in the United States as White supremacist heteropatriarchy while …

The Lived Experiences Of Self-Concealment Among Lgbq+ Counselors In The Workplace, Richard Charette Ii
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This study sought to unearth the narratives of LGBQ+ counselors’ experiences of self-concealment in the workplace. Self-concealment was an identity management strategy that was defined as an active, and sometimes persistent effort to conceal LGBQ+ identity. Self-concealment of affectional identity was well researched in workplace contexts, however only one study existing study examined self-concealment among LGBQ+ counselors. In that previous qualitative inquiry, Jeffery and Tweed (2014) called for further exploration of self-concealment among LGBQ+ counselors when self-concealment emerged as a surprising finding.
The phenomenon of self-concealment was under-researched in counseling but has been extensively conceptualized as both a developmental stage …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation describes the design, synthesis, and biological evaluation of bicyclic fused pyrimidines as single agents with combination chemotherapy potential with both antiangiogenic and cytotoxic effects. The dissertation also discusses one-carbon metabolism inhibitors and tumor targeting proteolysis targeting chimeras (PROTACs).
In cancer chemotherapy, the two major limitations are the dose-limiting toxicities of clinically used agents and the development of resistance to the treatment. Combination chemotherapy with antiangiogenic agents and microtubule targeting agents has shown an advantage against both these drawbacks. Single agents with both antiangiogenic activity and cytotoxicity would afford a therapy that circumvents pharmacokinetic problems of multiple agents, avoid …
Real-Time Monitoring Of Cell Death Progress Using Capacitance Spectroscopy, Suyang Wu
Real-Time Monitoring Of Cell Death Progress Using Capacitance Spectroscopy, Suyang Wu
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Biologics, including the monoclonal antibody (mAb), has experienced rapid development in the last decade. However, the price of biologics is often prohibitively high because of the low process efficiency. Delaying the inevitable cell death improves the productivity of upstream bioprocessing, whose success relies on monitoring the cell death onset that indicates the timing for preventive actions.
This study proposes to develop a real-time monitoring model that quantifies the dying cell percentage in lab-scale bioreactors using capacitance spectroscopy. The capacitance spectroscopy contains cell death-related information due to various physical properties changes during the cell death process, e.g., cytoplasmic conductivity change. The …
