Resilience In Late-Life Bereavement : Disentangling The Relationship Between Resilience And Cumulative Lifetime Loss., Shruti N. Shah Dec 2013

Resilience In Late-Life Bereavement : Disentangling The Relationship Between Resilience And Cumulative Lifetime Loss., Shruti N. Shah

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Though much of the recent focus in bereavement literature has been examining the nature and correlates of complicated grief, it is important to recognize that many older adults endure bereavements without major disruptions in emotional and daily functioning, despite the likelihood of having experienced numerous losses over a lifetime. This suggests an adaptive or resilient coping style within the context of late-life bereavement. However, much less is known about the underlying mechanisms and correlates that contribute to different bereavement outcomes. Broadly, the aim of this project was to expand our current knowledge of varying bereavement-related outcomes in an effort to …

The Relation Between Resilience And Coping Style In An Active-Duty Navy Sample, Dennis Mcelyea May 2013

The Relation Between Resilience And Coping Style In An Active-Duty Navy Sample, Dennis Mcelyea

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Amidst the efforts to understand the impact of occupational stress on military personnel, researchers have turned their attention to resilience. In a sample of active-duty Navy personnel, positive and negative coping strategies were explored as predictors of two resilience dichotomies (resilient vs. non-resilient).Positive coping strategies were expected to predict resilience, and negative coping strategies were expected to predict non-resilience.The results from two hierarchical binary logistic regression analyses demonstrated that seeking command support, praying/meditating, and arguing demonstrated statistically significant associations with resilience that were consistent with the hypotheses. Other coping strategies of interest, however, failed to demonstrate statistically significant associations with …

Lived Experiences Of Indian International Students: Migration, Acculturation, And Resilience, Suguna Mukthyala Jan 2013

Lived Experiences Of Indian International Students: Migration, Acculturation, And Resilience, Suguna Mukthyala

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The student demographics in American universities have been changing in recent years and the result is a rapidly increasing enrollment of international students. In particular, the Indian international student population has grown to be the second largest, with over 100,000 students enrolling at post-secondary educational institutions across the nation each year (Institute of International Education, 2010). However, research on the effects of migration on international students is relatively devoid of critical explorations on the resilient responses by Indian international students to the effects of acculturation. This hermeneutic phenomenological study explores the lived experiences of eight Indian international graduate students at …

Resilience Through Adversity: A Narrative Case Study Of Students' Experiences Of Expulsion From School, Nadia Coleman Krivenkov Jan 2013

Resilience Through Adversity: A Narrative Case Study Of Students' Experiences Of Expulsion From School, Nadia Coleman Krivenkov

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Expulsion from school is life changing. This single event can alter the trajectory of a student's life--for better or for worse. How life changes is unique for each individual student. Risk and protective factors that impact an individual student's resilience determine the level of positive or negative outcomes experienced as a result of expulsion. Educators have the opportunity to take advantage of this disruption in students' education to improve the trajectory of students' lives. However, without thoughtful intervention from caring educators, this interruption in students' education may have an irreparable destructive impact on students' future.

The purpose of this study …

As Long As You Have Your Health? Subjective Well-Being Trajectories In An Inflammatory Rheumatic Disease Sample, Jennifer Voth Jan 2013

As Long As You Have Your Health? Subjective Well-Being Trajectories In An Inflammatory Rheumatic Disease Sample, Jennifer Voth

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to explore different trajectories of subjective well-being (SWB) in a sample of people with rheumatic conditions using growth mixture modeling (GMM), and to identify demographic, disease-related, and psychosocial risk and protective factors associated with these response patterns. Four hundred and thirty two adults with rheumatoid arthritis (RA), systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), ankylosing spondylitis (AS), or gout were recruited online, and data were collected over the internet at six monthly intervals. Satisfaction with life (SWL; Diener, Emmons, Larson &Griffin, 1985) and positive and negative affect (PANAS; Watson, Clark, &Tellegen, 1988) were measured at each time …
